Yeah that one works(as long as it doesn't get too cold), also Prodibios Biodigest/Start Up works. JBL's product I've heard someone succesfully use to cycle their tank, but honestly as most people around the local fish forum recommend and use Prodibio, not many other products get tested. XD

Just curious, could you get some water from an established tank and add it to the un-established tank? Would it make it cycle faster?

Water has a very, very tiny amount of beneficial bacteria, so water from an established tank doesn't really help the cycle much at all. Filter media, on the other hand, can cycle a tank instantly. I never go through the cycling process anymore because I have so many tanks I can just grab some filter sponge and throw it in to the new tank's filter.

Aquarium salt dosage is 1 teaspoon per gallon, so 5 teaspoons a day for your tank. Make sure you dissolve the salt completely before adding to the tank!

I'm very sorry to hear that :c What I suggest is buying the Seachem Paraguard as soon as you can now and keeping it on hand. It can be used to treat almost any disease - parasitic, fungal, viral - and is even mild enough to be used as a cautionary preventative if you bought fish from a sketchy source and are concerned about the possibility of disease. I've personally used it for ich, internal parasites (never figured out the type), saprolegnia fungus, and on a bunch of minnows I got from a gross feeder tank. I always keep a bottle in my aquatic med cabinet, just in case.

Well, the tally is up!
I got a new betta last night, a gorgeous halfmoon.
I've wanted one with a more round tail for forever (I have two rescue veil tails) so I went for it.
My axolotl also came in the mail two weeks ago, and is settling in very well. Still looking for a name for her.
In the tropical tank, I am currently having troubles with diatom blooms. I've been trying to keep things dark to inhibit growth, I've scrubbed everything three times now, and I got a mystery snail to try to control it, but it's coming right back. Any tried and true remedies that you know of?
I love the fish, ESPECIALLY bettas. Trade me!
I was gone for a couple months, so I'm trying to catch back up on the pets from Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and the month pets during that time.

Is the tank cycled? How long has it been set up? If your tank is new and hasn't stabilized yet, that's the cause of the diatom blooms. In that case they will go away on their own after a couple months. I know the diatoms are a pain, but they're actually one of the better algaes. They rapidly consume the nutrients needed by other less healthy algaes that cause more problems. If the tank isn't new... are you using a silica sand by any chance? Diatoms feed off of silicates so the higher the silicate level in your tank the more diatoms you'll have to deal with.
I personally use nerite snails for diatom control. Mystery snails aren't worth it, imo. Too much waste and not enough algae eating.

Got a lovely betta today, blue and green and very large fins. His fins are all torn up and poor looking though, so I'm hoping with time to heal they'll get a bit more full and strong. Wish I could post a picture, he's a real beauty

Congratulations! He sounds like a beauty. Don't worry, torn fins will heal with warm, clean water. c:

Nothing to worry about. It's actually a natural behavior in some wild species of aquatic snails! They'll fill their shells with air then let themselves float along in the water. Quick transportation c:

Sigh... Not nice to come home for the weekend and find one cory and otto dead... :\ Corry I had a feeling was going to die soon, but the otto came out of the blue. Also they seemed fine when I came home for quick visit. I was even planning to finally get couple more corries on fall holiday if I'd have the money, but guess not...
Can we pretend that the airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now...
