Sniffing, although a bit crude, is the best way to see if a snail's dead, imo. It's fool-proof. If you smell it and it's dead, you will know for sure.

Anyone else make gel food for their goldfish? If so, let's share some recipes! It's fun to make and I especially like it for Goldie who has floaty problems.

No! I have one goldie in a 30 gallon, I use flaked food and sometimes frozen blood worms. I would like to learn recipes. ;w;

My friend is so cruel >.< she keeps 8 goldfish in a 20 gallon with one plant, no filter or pump, she feeds all of them one pinch of flake food a day, does 100% water changes every time the tank has algae and green water forming. I offered to keep the fish in my 150 gallon at my grand parents while she gets a 160 gallon but she sys "its fine i think the tank is too big" and im like how would you like getting locked in a small bathroom with 8 people?

Here's the recipe I just used to make some today:
2 jars Gerber's baby food (I used peas and squash)
A big leaf of fresh kale
2 boiled egg whites
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
4 cubes frozen bloodworms
1 pro biotic tablet
4 unflavoured gelatin packets
I usually add crushed goldfish pellets but I was running low so I skipped that.
I just blend it all together, boil it in a few cups spring water, let it set in the fridge over night, then slice it into cubes and freeze. c: It's a big hit with the goldies and way less messy than flakes/pellets.

@PeachFuzz, I'm definitely going to try that. I'm on spring break so I'll have to get the ingredients over the week. Thank you so much!

@skyfox, some do :D I had a half moon about a year ago who would love to be in the terra cotta pot, but I've used it for others and they don't seem to use it as much. It all depends on the betta. But it would be nice to supply one just incase it does want darkness/wants to hide.

Thanks c: I'll go get him one later. All the decors at pet stores by me are so rough I'm scared they'll snag his fins but terra cotta pots are so cute and smooth plus they sand easily with sand paper if there is a sharp spot so I think I'll try it for him. he's not one to hide but my friend nagged me about how he needs more privacy *shrugs*

A note on terracotta pots: Most have a hole on the bottom that should be plugged before putting in your tank. Many people have lost bettas because they went into the hole, got stuck, and drowned. Don't worry, it's an easy fix - just stuff in a little piece of aquarium sponge or glue a rock over the hole (using aquarium-safe silicone or super glue).

You're welcome, boston c: I'm sure your goldfish will love it!
