Jumping in this thread as I'm almost 2 weeks into owning a dog, for the first time since I was 12.

Mine is an 8-year-old Anatolian Shepherd, intact female, hovering around 100-110lbs and ~28" at the wither. Having only owned Labs and collies before Anatolians, I don't think I'll ever go back from LGDs. Such a massive difference, even though there are only two people (and a cat) here to guard.

Here she is in 2012. The photos I have are either very dark or have me in them. One day I'll take a picture in the daylight.

Anyway, my intention here is to ask about your experiences & advice on raw/partial raw diets. She's currently on Nature's Domain dry salmon & sweet potato, which is just 3.5 on dogfoodadvisor. I have a good relationship with a local butcher and several friends who hunt, so the potential for odds-n-ends is there.

If you feed raw, how did you start? What do you add besides protein? Do you find it more cost-effective and beneficial to the dog than premade food? For the latter - how do you know?

^^ if you're only going to reply to one person and it doesn't add to the discussion, please take it to pm.

@Stinkende: cardinal, link, and jazi were the ones to rely help me when i started Soph on partial raw, so i would try to talk to them :) But, based on my own knowledge when feeding raw you need to feed 6~8 % of their ideal body weight. And that 6~8% should be a 10% meat, 10% bone and 10% organ. But for the first little while you shouldn't include organ, just so th dog's body can adjust.
Before the first raw meal the dog should be fasted for 12 horse. Many people suggest starting with chicken because it is a very mild protean to eat, isn't expensive and the bones are easy to beak/chew. Keep in mind though that chicken organs don't really offer any nutritional value. Eventually, different meats will need to be added in. Any bones except the weight varying bones of large animals are fine to feed (so no cow or horse leg bones). If feeding pork it does need to be frozen at least 3 weeks before it's safe to give.
Meals should be spaced 8 to 12 hours apart.
Good luck!

And also, happy 7th birthday Sophie!! : sniff: she is getting so old...

Has anyone ever owned/ owns a blood-hound?
I've done my hw however if possible I'd love to here straight from an owner.
There one of the breeds I'm looking at for my third dog.
Currently working to complete my deer collection. I will overpay for bulk WL deer.

I helped socialize bloodhound puppies for my local SAR group. I did their website and mentioned that I like dogs so they brought their little ones to me to use me as a chew toy. So it's not owner experience and I don't know how correct they were for the breed but I can tell you my experience if you're interested.

never feed chicken bones to an animal. the broken shards can get lodged in the animal's throat.
