Quick question. So, as you know Adagio "my horse" is twenty and a thoroughbred. She's in great shape, strong feet, no sicknesses or past injuries or anything that makes her seem... Frail. However, I've been getting into cantering lately, and I want to make sure that you guys think it's safe for me to canter her? At what age should I stop cantering? Thanks! xx

There is no set age to stop cantering her. She sounds utterly fine for it at the moment. I work at a stable with lots of horses in their twenties at it and several in their thirties. There's a thoroughbred there who is around 26 and still capable of going out on 2-hour rides with lots of longer canters on them and his only issue is that he becomes very out of breath after each canter and breathes noisily, but he recovers quickly and it is clearly doing him no harm. A couple of minutes to get his breath back and he's ready to go again, though he does have some kind of supplement to keep his airways good. So just be alert to how Adagio's feeling. If she seems to be taking longer than normal to recover after canters, or starts getting stiff joints, talk to a vet. With joint problems it's often better to give the horse painkillers and keep them in work, to prevent their joints stiffening further, but when/if she gets to that stage, talk to a vet about how much work to give her. Based on the horses I've known, she should probably be fine for cantering up until the age of 28-34-ish. Just see how she goes really.

Midnight loves to eat twisties if anyone even knows what they are. And I had a horse that ate banana peal once (I didn't know it wasn't good for her at the time). And I've seen a horse eat chips, packet and all. But my horse is a sucker for twisties, laminations and cold black tea.

Banana peel is fine for horses to eat.

@AKinkAdmirer well I wasn't expecting that! Most people have told me that I was lucky she didn't get sick, I guess they just assumed that.

Does anyone else have a horse that likes to eat odd foods? (Or not foods XD)

Granix loves coffee. The mornings I show up with a banana and a cup of coffee, his eyes go all buggy and he runs through all his tricks trying to earn his treat, haha. He always gets the whole banana, but only the last sip of the coffee if he's being particularly good.

Granix is out in a new field with 'new' friends (one of them is new, the other he knew from his old barn) . . . and he's VERY upset about it. He went out fine, but then had a moment of "wait, this isn't my field! This isn't my herd! wth, mom!?" and then spent over an hour running along the fence line screaming. >>; He got himself super sweaty and tired so I didn't end up riding as I was planning to and instead just hosed him down, cooled him off, and put him back out where he just worked himself up again. -_-
He's like a dramatic high-schooler throwing a massive hissy fit because they switched him into a different homeroom class. He better get it together soon or he's going to hurt himself.

Hey guys, I would love your input on something that has been irking me. It's not something urgent, but I'd love to hear what you guys have to say regarding what breed Harley is. If it helps she is 16 hands...Here are some pictures:

Thanks guys c:

@Braveheart: Personally, I have experience with many older horses, as that is what my stable's lesson program mainly consists of. There is a twenty-five year old mare at my barn who still does lessons of thirty minutes walk, trot, canter, and cantering over ground poles. We also have a twenty-three year gelding who does al, including small crossrails. I would say as long as the horse is happy and helthy, go for it! c;

@my own random food conversation: Harley loves slushies and and the ever so generic mints.It's rather humorous because Harlequin clearly prefers red slushies over all others XD

    @banishment: well an immediate thing to look for is a tattoo (like tb racehorse) on her upper lip or any brandings. If not, I'd have to guess a TB or QH or appendix. TB being the most likely.
    @the silver brumby: this is regarding your post from the previous page. I do pony club to, but in the U.S. We call our "inter zone" shows "rallies". Just thought it was interesting on the difference. I had an eventing rally back in May and my dressage sucked too cx

    @Mr. Milo - yeah it is a little odd but my trainer says that somebody tightened his girth way too tight once and it scared him into thinking bad things would happen if the girth is too tight at first, and thanks! oh and i competed when i was riding english, mostly jumper and a little hunter too.

    @Kestrell - congrats! as for a barn name, maybe name him after one of the agents of shield? (: such as: grant, phil, leo ect ect. or maybe look at these:
    king
    axe
    titan
    max
    dyson
    mason
    oliver (ollie for nickname)
    ares (greek god of war)
    fergus (means man of strength x)

i dont think thoroughbred....the Body is not at all like any tb should look.....maybe a little part mixed in somewhere but this happened to most qh and other working horse breeds to get them faster or bigger....
he looks more like a working horse...like QH, or a QH draft mix, a Ranch horse....not sure...can you show bether Standing pics of the full Body, or movement?
Maybe a pic of his behind...

@ June Bug:
that happens sometimes with a "new place or herd"^^, give him time, and maybe put some hay outside for them to eat maybe then he calms down... hope he calms down over the next days...or at least gets so tirred that he calms down because of this and starts to think again...^^

@ Hime:
so much stress and Anger...maybe they think ist easyer to talk with you, maybe you are calmer or whatever...But it also could mean that you are trustworthy enough for them and do a good work there...who knows...maybe ask^^

Hope that Feykja soon is fully bether! what does your vet say? some herbs maybe or something other natural that helps?
Testing the milk of Heta if something is wrong with it?
Please klick them or they will die°°!!!

Just got back from the barn and apparently Granix caused a lot of trouble after I left yesterday. The idiot decided to try to smash the gate (so now there's a huge dent in it) and when he wasn't satisfied with that, jumped it and ran back to the barn. Not sure whether to be mad or impressed as it's a 5+ foot gate.
However I am mad that they gave in and put him in his old field, but because they put a new mare out there and removed the other, he decided he was going to try to kill the new mare. They managed to separate the two of them before he did any real damage, but he did manage to cut her up a bit. He's never acted like that before and I'm so embarrassed. That mare is the barn owner's super nice, fancy WB. Barn owner says she believes that because the other mare, who ran the herd, was gone, he saw it as an opportunity to try to take over.
They're reverting back to the old arrangement until they can work out a new plan that will keep him in with his group and with a mare that will keep him in line.

@[Braveheart]: There is no set age when you should stop cantering or even riding a horse.They age at different rates and as long as they are sound and othervise feel up for the task, there's no problem riding them well into their 20ties. Keeping them moving is also great for them as it can help them stay in better condition longer. One of our boarders has a 27 year old mare, who she still rides several times a week on trails. And I believe they go all gaits. Recently she had the horse taken to a vet clinic and one younger vet student thought the horse was like 19 years old. XD At one point the boarder did talk about the mare slowing down a little, but it may have been just due the weather being very hot and the horse having still very thick coat. One of the lesson horses is also around that age and would be in full lesson use, if he hadn't injured his shoulder weirdly during the winter, so now he's in little lighter work.

@Mr.Milo: Funny part is this leaser person has owned at least 2-3 horses in past(all Icelandics, except the latest which was a young gypsy and fjord cross, who she figured out eventually wasn't horse for her) and once even kept horses on her own property I believe. She just can't seem to pick up new ways of doing things with horses and is kinda stuck with the thought that her lease horse used to be very timid around people and actually bit spooky when ridden(partly due being blind on one eye). Thus she babies him and lets him get away with things, at least on ground as I've never seen her riding the horse since she prefers trails as well. She also has habbit of feeding the horse dry bread from the saddle when she mounts and refuses to put a noseband on the horse, even when L has asked to do so... Despite all this, she does excersise the horse really well and he's probably in best shape he's been in years. She also does random usefull building projects, cleans in the stable, does chores and cleans paddocks(though 99% of time only her lease horse's paddock). So I'm not sure how I feel about her. Sometimes she's overly fussy and sometimes it's nice to have her around as things get done. >_<

Running on open field is something for sure. We've used our pasture sometimes for that in early fall and winter. If it wasn't cut into about half lenght vise with fencing, you could get pretty darn long straight slightly uphill...

@Kestrell: Congrats! Pictures please when you can. :D

@Banishment.: If you could get a full body picture with all of the legs also showing it would be little better to play the guessing game from. c; That being said it's a guessing game. My guess would be at least part TB, maybe crossed with QH.

@June Bug: I feel you with the paddock puzzle... We have too many horses that can't be paddocked with just any other horse(if any really) and some horses can't be paddocked next to each other, or in certain paddock due them having too many bugs... It's a nightmare, especially when you'd really need more paddocks to solve it. -___-
_______________________
Feykja's belly problems somehow magically went totally away overnight, which ment she and Heta got to finally go out to the pasture and will most likely now stay there 24/7 unless the weather goes really bad. :D The weather today was really perfect for the horses as it was really really windy, but not too cold especially when the sun was out and it didn't wind momentarily. So all the summer itch horses were super calm and relax with very minimal tail swishing. ^^ We also added most of the other mares in with Heta and Feykja little by little and tomorrow we are turning out last 4 of the mares, 3 of which we figured would be most problematic due their strong natures and one of the 3 being totally new to some of the herd. Today all went in pretty nicely and only run couple rounds trying to get close to Feykja, but Heta kept her couple meters from everyone. When I went to check them out little later, she even pinned her ears at me when Feykja came to me and I scratched her. Then pretty quick she seemed to realise it was just me, relaxed and went back to eating and let me play with Feykja. I guess I just got promoted as a babysitter for Heta. XD

The boarder I spoke of in my last post. Things moved pretty quick and now the horse is leaving tomorrow. She let L know either late last night or today morning. The horse also has a leaser, who has been leasing him for years and generally has been around for even longer. She's pretty attached to the horse(dare I say even more than the owner sometimes), so it was pretty big shock for her when the owner told her yesterday apparently that the horse was moving on Sunday. Saddest part is that the owner said she didn't need the leaser to ride the horse anymore at the new place, which would indicate she found someone else to ride him... This I find extremely rude and incosiderate as the leaser has been nothing but good for the horse and is very fond of him, plus she would have been willing to ride him in the new place as well. L is extremely pissed about this as well and due that she won't be around when they come pick up the horse tomorrow as she probably wouldn't be able to be civil with the boarder and just generally she just wants this over with.

@Banishment
Look for a lip tattoo, brand etc. If there are none, maybe an unraced TB, appendix or a very very slightly built quarter horse... or even possibly some sort of draft cross, without seeing her whole body I can only guess..

@weird food
My new guy LOVES Sour Patch Kids XD he is VERY food motivated... another horse at my barn practically jumps over the moon for pears with lemon juice...

...a picture of the new baby for your viewing pleasure XD (hopefully I can get more up soon... it's just hard to get any good ones)
