Anaphea: I'm a bit nervous using a whip, just because i'm afraid he might think to go faster. However, I will consider it and maybe bring it on my next ride. It's been awhile since i've used one and the last time I did I was on an older horse. I did not think about the tack think since the owner never said anything to me but maybe ill use her saddle next time since I know for sure he is fine with that one, and perhaps her bridle as well. As for the circles I have done that with him but it doesn't seem to work much. However, I will try on working on getting my point across to him, maybe that will be better. Thanks for your help! I will use it next time I ride him!!

@ShortyTheHobbitess: Yeah we are still getting there with understanding each other. I have done that before and tried adding more pressure to the outside but he doesn't respond. I will check his tack again and maybe use the owenrs tack and perhaps use a crop/whip for the next ride. I appreciate your help!!

@Verdana: I agree with the relationship part there, since I feel he doesn't fully trust me that the jump is okay. Its just different having to be this stern with a horse, so its something i just need to learn. Usually the horses i ride are not exactly push overs but they are a little older and much easier to move around if you know what I mean. However, he's not all that bad, i agree that we need some more work to be done, i set up a whole entire mini started course with ground poles and a cross rail jump so we can start slow. He is pretty predictable in where he will start heading but even when i try to keep him from going and using both my legs and reins he still is unwilling, I'm probably doing something wrong but i'm looking for a traveling trainer now. Thanks for your input by the way!!

Almost forgot to respond to your riding update, but I'm glad that riding is going well! I love when you sit a nice canter it feels so nice! And OMG those baby photos look adorable I want to take care of a goal one day. Her stink eye face is the cutest!!

@pianissimo: I am sorry about your instructors horse! Have you considered leasing? My backyard isn't the best place either mainly because of size but I bet a barn in your area must have a backyard fit for a horse.

@Hime: That's awesome!! You have so many horses now but i think my favorite part is that they are all related!! Truly something I would like to do if I had my own stable, just have a few horses that are all family! Thanks for the advice I will be sure to use it! It seems like shortening my inside rein and using a crop/whip are some of by best answers at the moment. It weird though because we've done figure 8's at a walk and he's fine its once we start trotting that he will get rebellious. He will also do it in an arena and start going towards the door. We started doing figure 8's around these two trees in one of the arenas and hes kinda fine with those for the most part since its on the opposite side of the where the door is but maybe ill start working in there for a bit before going to where the jumps are, perhaps ill just move the jumps to the arena (which i think i mentioned in my last post). Anyways, thanks for the advice and ill be sure to use it tomorrow.
Thats sounds great! I miss doing kids camps and pony rides, one thing I don't like about private barns is how little people there are. Haha little Feykja is ready to eat the big mare food but it seems like she is one hungry monster. I hope her hunger curiosity doesn't get her into too much trouble, and that her love for things that are not food blows over! :lol: I am glad you got to ride as well and that the horse you rode was good to you for the most part, wish you could teach Cracker a lesson for me XD.

Ugh I haven't been on here in forever

@veranda she is a very cute foal. I can't imagine how nice she'll look when she is full grown. What breed is she? Also relating to the eye question - we have a paint whom had beautiful brown eyes as a colt, and then they started to look slightly blue around the edges. They then turned bluer and bluer, at one point my mother was worried he was blind becuase his eyes looked brown with blue cloudy bits. But he's not blind and his eyes are still somewhat brown and somewhat blue. He's still not fully grown but his eyes will be blue by then. I think it will be the same with your filly.

@my riding
So I recently went to some inter zone horse trials. In the case that someone doesn't know how they work it goes like this- there a pony clubs from each zone and they are mushed together, they then create teams of four/three. Your team may have people from your pony club or a different one, but chances are you've competed against them. My team had one member from my club and two that weren't. (Oh and the top three scores from the team are used to determine the teams score.) But one of my teammates scratched, so this left us with three riders and no chance to mess up or the whole team would be eliminated. In dressage my teammates came 1st and 4th and I came 22nd aka second last - but at least I wasn't last. In showjumping we all cleared it. In cross country one of my teammates retired and the other eliminated. So even though I did a HORRIBLE job on my dressage I was the last person in my team left standing.
So now we have decided to stop doing events and I'm just going to get lessons to improve my riding. There were also other reasons my dressage didn't go so well like - only practicing it once and in the wrong sized arena, not having ridden in a while, having different people tell me different things etc. But I need to improve on my flatwork and that's what I'm going to do.

Does anyone else's horse obsess over food? I feed my horse more than enough, but he still goes crazy every time I go out to feed him. It has gotten to the point where I now stand in front of his hay until he calms down and stops pushing me for it. It can take up to 10 minutes, but he's getting way better about it now.

Yup. My mare has always been very fond of food, but it feels like it has escalated over past month or so when she's been stuck indoors much more and people keep passing her(sometimes with feed bucket in hand), but not giving her food. She gets quite fussy and then recectly she has started to fight with her neighbor(or more like he has started to fight with her) when ever there's food near, but not given to them. She also has habbit of pawing when waiting for food... I've taught her some manners when she gets her feed and with that she's actually pretty good.
_______________
Barn drama... Need I say more. :roll: Two boarders(well, one of them is now technically just a leaser) who kinda think they know the best, but they really don't and misread horses. One of them and L are pretty much on silent war path(at least on L's side), as they haven't really spoken to each other in months after the boarder said she wasn't interested in L's advice or input in her horse's care. So L being L, got pretty upset about that, stopped even trying to really talk to this boarder and I think ever since she's been pretty negative about that boarder in general. Though now I also found out the boarder has been breaking the boarding contract by not paying on time and possibly planning on breaking it again in different way. -___- Then there's this boarder/leaser, who babies her lease horse big time and thinks he's just scared/uncomfortable when he acts up, while in reality the horse is totally playing her or reflecting the person's feelings. Said horse also has huge ego, which he hides really well by being quite reserved around people. He might not let you catch him one day and then the next no problem(he's always been bit fishy to catch, but he's improved a ton over the years). He's been inside at one place for couple years and also alone, but now he has randomly decided to throw a huge fits in his stall when he's in for the night or left alone. Then one time at least when the leaser tried to walk him into the stable he refused to go there for no reason. One point he also pretended to be oh so terrified of paddock gate(he's very respectfull of the fence, but this was ridiculous), he had to shoot through it when opened, if you got him near it in the first place. And most of this behavior started recently when she started to spend little more time with that horse. :roll: L talked to the leaser and thankfully she's somewhat responsive to advice, but has bad habbit of forgeting/not following that advice after sometime. What has happened to our peaceful small barn where everyone was friendly with each other and there was minimum bad talking and gossiping behind the backs. Not that I'm not guilty of that myself, as I tend to tell L what these two are up to, due them not confronting L about things she should really know about head on... Like when the leaser's horse was moved to one paddock temporary upon L and her agreement and then when the horse was supposed to be moved to another paddock, the leaser got super upset about it as she refered the paddock was a pigsty(which it only is more or less when it gets really wet, so fall and spring mostly). She complained to me about this lound and whiny(how her soul cries and hurts about thinking 'her' horse has to go there) when I asked her to help me move the horses. I told her fine, let's not move the horses and to go talk to L about it as I'm really just following her orders(she's my boss after all) and she was like okay. Talked to L later about it and turned out the boarder never talked to L about the planned paddock change and how she felt about it. Luckily one horse moved away(actually the leaser's own horse, who she sold) and we got to switch some horses around in couple paddocks to make things work out for all(mostly at least). So yeah, month of working at the stable and feels like I'm the one everyone comes to when they have problem with something or need to complain... Sure I've been also physically around in the stable on most days than L is, due me usually doing all but morning rounds and most people showing up in the late afternoon/evening, so they are more likely to see me but still it's L who's in charge and runs the place.

Anyway, now that I got to rant out all that, on bit happier note. Feykja is now 3 weeks old and hopefully if weather and few things are looking good, she and Heta might move into the pasture full time tomorrow, but at least for the day and we try to put few other mares with them as well. Unfortunately Feykja is still having some stomach issues in form of runny poop(projectile even on couple occasions), but I think it's getting little better already as I washed her butt yesterday and it really wasn't that dirty today. Luckily she's drinking good and the poop issue doesn't seem to be effecting her much.
Can we pretend that the airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now...

Hey you guys!

Quick question. So, as you know Adagio "my horse" is twenty and a thoroughbred. She's in great shape, strong feet, no sicknesses or past injuries or anything that makes her seem... Frail. However, I've been getting into cantering lately, and I want to make sure that you guys think it's safe for me to canter her? At what age should I stop cantering? Thanks! xx

    @[Braveheart] - as far as i know, as long as she isn't showing any sign of pain, such as limping, refusing to canter, or you see she seems sore afterwards, you're completely fine to canter her at that age! i use to canter on a horse when i was younger who was 29!

    hi everyone. i'm crow and haven't posted here before, but recently just wanted to share some things (:
    anyway, i've been riding for about 8 years now, been around horses since i was about 3. i started to ride in lessons by myself at around 6 or so, and also started showing around that time too. i took a few breaks, about 2 for 2 years due to financial issues, and also i broke my ankle. continuing, i always rode english but for the past year i've been riding western. for the last month or two i've started to ride an 18 year old AQH named Woodrow, beautiful dark bay gelding who i believe was either an ex reiner or pleasure horse or maybe both. he's super sweet, turns and stops on a dime, but he has a small issue riding outisde of the arena and also girth issue. he isn't aggressive, just gets very nervous if you tighten the girth too tight at first, so i have to tighten in different places (ex. first time by stalls, second time by truck, final time in arena) so he doesn't get nervous. but once you get on he's pretty bomb proof! i love him lots, very sweet horse, and hopefully i will lease him for a month or two and start showing soon as well. my trainer says we would make a great team (: i also use to ride a black AQH named Dakota and a red roan pony named Rory. i miss them ;-; but atleast they are still at the barn haha.

@The Silver Brumby: That sounds really cool, it's like a triathalon for horses. I honestly give you a ton of credit for going out there in the first place. I've never done a show partly because I'm nervous to, but at least you did well in jumping! Practicing more is always great, are you training in dressage now as well?

@~The Llama Goddess~: My lease horse LOVES food!! He does not push me but if you try to pull him away from his grain he will get cranky and act up when you're riding him. That's good your getting stern with him and hopefully it reaches a point where he's not pushing you for food.

@Hime: UGH!! I knew a lady who boarded her horse at a rescue i used to volunteer at and she was like that. I don't think she was as vocal but she babied her horse WAY too much. First of all her horse was huge and would bite at your clothes and not let go and he had no boundaries. One time he was pulling my sweatshirt and basically lifting me but she was watching me and i was pretty young so I couldn't do much and i was scared she would yell at me if i scolded her horse. Back to your case, it seems like that lady knows nothing about horses, it seems like she just like the idea of having one around or seeing them around. I can't believe she said that about the paddock. I live in a place where it is always raining in the summer, so I understand what you mean. In all, she's not a very good leaser. I'm pretty on par with the lady who own Cracker, and I couldn't imagine causing much problems for her or the stable owner. As for Feykja I'm glad thing are getting a bit better for her and that is doesn't seem like its bother her, she seems like such a sweet girl!

@[Braveheart]: I'm not a horse expert, but I used to ride a lesson horse that was around twenty and I would canter fine on him. Maybe try cantering a few strides with her and she how she holds up.

@crow..: Hi crow! That's awesome that you showed, what discipline did you compete in? I love quarter horses and i'm glad you guys get along. I've never heard of a horse that's like that with their girth. At the same time my leaser horse will bob his head when you tighten it, but he's been getting better about that. Hopefully you will get the chance to lease him!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd like to again thank everyone for their advice with me and Cracker. I haven't gotten the chance to ride him the past two days due to the tons of rain we've been getting but it cleared up some so I could ride. I used more verbal commands to make him understand that he is not allowed to just turn whatever direction he wants. It actually helped a lot! He would not pull me and he actually did not test me when we were going over the ground poles. We actually did jump the cross rails a few times but he still has to be three strides away to jump it but in all it was great! I am so proud of him and I gave him a lot of praise every time he did something so i think that also helped. Afterwards I decided to take him on the trails since he had some energy in him for we didn't do too much. It was great this time because this time we cantered through the trails, it's so much fun to not be restricted by the arena and go so fast with him, I kinda felt like a jockey at one point. Has anyone else done something like that, running in an open field or something similar?

Food loving horse? I'll let you guys in on a little food related secret..

My trainer and I always go to sonic before lessons, its our therapy session because we tell each other about everyone and everything that stressed out during the week xD. And Sugar is in love with the peppermints c:

Shhh...

Regarding food, Sugar is big for food but she's a bit jumpy when you assert yourself so it doesn't cause any major issues. The most she does is drop her head to nibble a bush when we pass (because I let her <_<) but as soon as I step in, that head goes right up.

@Mr.milo
I forgot to mention that it was a horse trial, but I guess it is kinda like a horse triathlon. I guess if it was called a horse triathlon then people would respect the fact that it's a sport a bit more. Maybe one day you will have the courage to do one to! And the instructor I'm getting as actually a jumping instructor but he is really good at teaching dressage. He makes the two disciplines similar to each other rather than the opposite.

@my own random food conversation
Midnight loves to eat twisties if anyone even knows what they are. And I had a horse that ate banana peal once (I didn't know it wasn't good for her at the time). And I've seen a horse eat chips, packet and all. But my horse is a sucker for twisties, lamingtons and cold black tea.

@New pony/Barn name
Guys! It finally happened! My long and horrible horse search has finally come to an end! A big, beautiful 8 yr old dutch warmblood gelding was finally put into the empty stall of my old horse. (I have to be honest, I cried a little when I saw his x-rays at the pre- purchase exam because of how clean and perfect they were). I will have to get the pictures I took off of the camera and post them here. His registered name is Double Agent, but he doesn't have a barn name yet... Any ideas?
