@Kyoka- Too frighten cute!! We are expecting 13-18 foals this year. Season starts for us at the end of april/beginning of may.:) We are going to imprint some of our foals and leave the others unimprinted. Come next year if we like the foals we imprint we are going to start imprinting all our foals. Little experiment I suppose!

That experiment has actually been done in some study and I believe the result was that the imprinting had negative effect on the foals' behavior. I unfortunately can't remember where I read this as it was many many years back. ^^'

Imprinting foals

Postby Mercury.Muses » Fri Mar 11, 2016 12:18 pm

^ Going off of Hime, xChry, Rick Gore has some good videos addressing how imprinting is negative.

It really isn't even just one study that justifies it though, you can search it up on google and most likely find articles and other horsemen/women and trainers addressing how imprinting is bad.

Ive read some, but it also doesnt hurt to try it yourself. I dont believe everything i read. Besides, I have negative outlooks on Rick himself and just dont like him overall. He IS a good horseman, just the way he goes about treating his fans just irritates me. We will see. What ive understood is that if its done improperly, or not well enough, it can be rather very negative. But ive never heard anything bad about foals or horses that have been properly imprinted and then handled afterward? I work with some top grade trainers and barrel racers in my state, and surroundings, and a majority of them say to give it a try and see what happens. Weve already got a couple people lined up to buy foals who are imprinted, so im not sure about anything yet. Id like to see for myself results, if that makes any sense!

Hello, as a horse caretaker, I always look at what Google has to say about something that may happen to my horse. Though, I agree with xChry.. I have been told many things about horses that all contradict each other so see how it works for your foals. If it doesn't work, live and learn.

Also, I need some help with my horse. Every horse gets rain rot at some point in their lives. My horse right now has horrible rain rot on his legs. The crusty part is almost half a centimeter thick and we have been treating it with MTG. I would like to know if there is any other INEXPENSIVE way to help rid of it. I really just want my horses white sock to look pure white for once.

When Dealing with my boy Rooster who was covered in rain scald All I did was kept him dry and curried the mold carefully because pulling at it can hurt. There are some things out there that you can find online that is pretty inexpensive but I currently cant think of the name..I believe I spent a month doing that before I was finally able to shave since the mold was pulled far enough away from his body clippers could shave it off.

Rain Scald takes time to get rid of! best thing to do it keep your ponies legs dry and clean and do not share any grooming supplies with other horses until its gone and you've cleaned it all.

@kyōka suigetsu - Those foals are adorable! Can I steal one or two? haha

So I finally have started back up riding! After eight long months of being away from horses I have started up my lessons again! I am currently riding a black horse, which breed I do not remember at this moment in time. He belongs to a boarder at the barn and he has been gone a lot for business my instructor has been letting a few others ride to get him his exercise..His Canter is great, it's longer than most horses that I have rode so I tend to keep him back because I am not used to the speed. He is a good horse and nice to ride but my only problem is he liked to fall on his inside on his right which is a big problem because I don't have a lot of strength in my right leg because of some minor damage done to it from a fall few years back. So I was just wondering what are some good stretches, exercises that I can do to strengthen up my leg? I've been told squats and lunges but there has to be something else out there because doing those two things is getting rather boring, haha.

Also my trainer has decided that she is changing the way I ride and its killing me! I tend to sit on my horse with my shoulders a little to far back causing my post to be a little too big. and I like to hold my hands together near the horse's withers for some reason so she has me working on keeping my hands apart and lower and its just uncomfortable really. I really hate the fact that I let these bad habits last for so long because I know it will be a while before I finally break them and ride like a normal person..

Re: Do You Ride Horses? V.4

Ok, so I have come on here to rant about this girl that I know. I'm going to pretend the girls name is Kylie. Kyle has been riding for four/five years and I have been riding before I could walk. She only has one horse that she received around a year (maybe 2) ago, before that it was a riding school. She told me that she likes it when her horse is 'naughty' becuase then she gets to hit it. She thinks her horse is worth 5-10 thousand when it's only 2k at very most. She currently wants to get a bigger 'eventer' becuase she thinks her horse can only go up to grade 2. She is currently sitting on grade 4 and is not ready to go up any time soon. Kylies mother recently started leasing a horse. Kylies family has no idea about horses and none of them have grown up around horses or horse people. The horse that their leasing is only meant to be walked but the day after they got the horse she showed me videos of her jumping and cantering on this horse that they were only meant to walk because of a (ongoing) shoulder injury. Kyle also wants to enter the leased horse in jumping comps. This annoys the hell out of me and soon I'm going to tell the owners what she is doing. This next part is what is really driving me insane. A few days ago she said she was going to get a 'project pony' to break in. When I asked her how she was going to break in a horse she replied with, "I'm going to put the saddle on it." I told her that was not the correct way to break in a horse and she replied with, "well I'll put the saddle on it and then lunge it." As if that would help. Her parents are actually planning to get this horse for her to break in, her parents are not horsey at all and will let her use any method to break in a horse, even the quick way. I have broken in 3 horses and retrained 2. I have 'confronted' her multiple times as she still is planning on breaking in the horse by just chucking a saddle on its back, at one point she replied with, "well you don't know everything." Correct. I don't. But at least I admit it. Her family are not horsey, have not grown up with horsey people, and she only got her first horse like a year ago. Me on the other hand. I have grown up around horses and so has my mother. I've been going to pony club and lessons and a super super young age. I've seen first hand, good horses, bad horses, bad horse people, good horse people, bad training methods, good training methods. I have seen and learnt so much about horses and the package that comes with it. I would know better than her on how to break in a horse properly. Please help me persuade her that she shouldn't break in a horse by just chucking a saddle on its back and making it run around in circles having know idea what or who is on its back. Please help me. Please.
Thankyou and sorry if you don't like me ranting.

Being a trainer myself, you dont even start the process with the saddle. Theres far more to it than just saddle work from the ground. I tell my students bluntly what is and what isnt. I believe it makes them better riders if they are able to know and focus on making their weak parts stronger. What I would suggest is to contact the owner of the injured horse and make them aware of whats going on. Say its none of your business, but you're doing it for the horses well being and see if theyll step in and terminate the lease or something. As for her wanting to train... Id say let it happen and she can see for herself just how hard it is and how stupid shell realize she is for taking it on. Some horses are angels to break, some are just... Well, lets not get into the bad ones. But sooner or later she'll probably get hurt, whether it be seriously or a close call, and hopefully shell realize she certainly does not have the skill it takes at that point.
