I don't think it's that he's short that he's having a weird jump. To me it looks like he's having trouble spotting his distance, and initially taking off way to close to the jump. If you set a pole about one of your strides out from the jump, it should encourage him to take a later take-off, essentially making him jump cleaner, smoother and more comfortable for you, as well as lowering the risk of pulling a rail. c:

I agree- he's going in far too deep and as a result having to lurch upwards- basically on the spot. Make sure you do put that rail a stride out, it'll improve his jump a lot! He is super energetic in his jump, though, which is awesome.

~SilkyMoth~ wrote:Hey, I just found this chat. My mum has been asking lately about whether i'd like to go to horse riding classes but I have Aspergers Syndrome, (a form of autism) which means im quite anxious and unpredictable at times. I really do want to go to horse riding classes and I do love horses, I have since I was young, it's just im not to sure I should ride a full sized horse due to me being quite anxious about large horses.

Does anyone have any suggestions that could help me?

Do it :!:

i know how you feel^^ when you like more advice you can pm me.

to be with horses is a great way to get together with People and still not being to close to them.
tell the owner and the Trainer you Problem together with you parents, they will find a way for you. maybe start with single lessons to times where there are not so many People there, so you can clean and tack your horse in peace with bether instruction of the Trainer and without being pushed to much to fast.

i have to say....an large horse may be easyer than a Pony....Pony can be mean Little spitfires...and i find its way easyer to handle the large ones...and its often more so with a well trained Schoolhorse.

sure they look big, but most are easy and nice and often gentle, and they will not give you a green horse or one you cant handle as bloody beginner -....they want to Keep there rider and get new ones like you to stay...so they will not be mean , but you and your parents could ask to try out a gentle Pony....or maybe they are nice and let you look at the horses and Ponys they have for lessons and see with what horse you are the best that "click" with you^^

Dont fear the first lesson, they will go easy with you...cleaning and tacking the horse, how to get on and sit, how to hold reins, how to stop where to put the legs...and then some easy round on the lung or lead around the Arena...
it will be fun, and when you feel the horse is not the right for you tell it the Trainer or your parents tell it to them, then you will try out the next time an other.

you will see, you will forget most things on the back of a horse or Pony, you will feel more free and happy. and you will learn with time some confidence

good luck and write how it did go, if you did go to your first lesson, and when you Need advice^^

Great that your back is getting better. ^^ But sucks you got sick. I don't know if it's same where you are, but we've had plenty of people sick recently at school. : P And I so agree on that holiday saying, I spend most of my fall holiday mostly sleeping and just generally resting and when I finally felt like doing something the holiday was over(and that stupid flat tire happened). >_>

Sadly no more snow here. :( It pretty much melted between Wednesday and Thursday and now it's too warm again for us to have some more. There was only snow at school(north from my home and stable) though and not even the near by areas had that much. Image
^ That's taken Sunday evening when I came back to the dorms. Same time at the stable there was only 1cm of snow or not even that. Not sure if Tý's place had snow, but I don't think they did...
Heta's doing okay, I think she hasn't been on lessons much(and now they have 2 week lesson break anyway), so she's had quite bit of energy everytime I've free lunged/ridden her, which is quite nice change. Like yesterday she was super excited about cantering and I think at the first transition she sort of tried to do a mini buck like movement. :lol: She's been pretty good to ride, but the trot is still little unsure time to time and sometimes she'd just piggy pace no matter what I do(which is pain in the butt when you try to do canter transition and it's not working from walk). I've been thinking about getting a massage for her, but we'll see about that with my sucky student budjet...
Tý's place had some changes recently, since the owner sort of shut down the place. Meaning she's not taking in any new foals to grow, but is not kicking out the current residents and continues to take care of them. Also because of that, the half Icelandic, who worked there and were sort of in charge of the care, moved else where as they were left unemploid. So I'm little nervous how things will turn out and especially considering the breeding show in spring, but the owner said there would be still showing services available. So I'm thinking the couple will still be handling the foals for the show if needed, which would be big relief. Tý himself is probably doing okay, I haven't gone see him lately as it's been so wet I wouldn't be able to get any decent pics of him(waiting for the snow and ground to freeze). Plus school has been kinda busy, so not much free time during the day and the dark comes in so quick in the evening...
Baby is still there(I hope, the fear it's not there as been creeping in recently...) and I think Heta's belly has changed in shape. Like it's kinda wide near the hind legs, but only sort of at the bottom. If that makes any sense. XD But she's also little chubby at the moment, so it's bit hard to say how much is baby and how much is just fat(and fur).
I was sick for only about a week, and it was really weird in terms of the symptoms compaired to what I usually get. But I did have some mild symptoms for another week after that, but not so bad I couldn't go to school. Also at least one of my classmates got the same thing, and most likely from me. XD
Can we pretend that the airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now...

Aww, I'm sorry! Just be super careful about getting anything in it. Hope he feels better!

So, the horse I'm leasing, Orlando, has been barn sour (rushing back to his stall after every lesson). He can't even see the barn without acting up, so it's been impacting my lessons and practices outside. Any ideas about how to fix that? Thanks so much!

@captain swan
does/has he ever broken out of his stall or pasture? if not try putting him in the pasture and let him run before the lesson as he might have pent up energy. just a thought.

Orlando has another nasty habit of breaking out of his stall/pasture, so we have a special 3 part lock on his stall, and a different hook on the pasture he is assigned to. I'll try that, but what about after?

@captain swan
Walk him around after your lesson. Take extra time to walk him out, hand walk him outside a little bit, and don't groom or untack in his stall if at all possible. Walk him around after you're done grooming and untacking, and then turn him out for a few minutes if possible. Then, slowly walk him back to his stall, taking your time. If he starts to pull you forward, turn around, and walk him for a few more minutes. Make him listen and relax. And like Weiss Schnee said, some extra turnout time probably isn't a bad idea either.

@Barn Searches / Personal Updates
Well I think I can say my barn search is officially over! I rode at 3 barns, all of which I was very pleased with, but one barn really stood out to me and made me very happy. I went with the one that's the farthest away and has a very high private lesson price, but it's a great stable and I'm really excited to start there in their group lessons. I'll say a little bit about each trial.

Trial one went pretty well, it was about a month ago and it wasn't anything to exceptional. Instructor was nice, the horse I rode, Apollo, was a total sweetheart, but it just didn't really click with me as well as I thought it would. Nice focus on equitation, though.

Trial two was last Saturday, the indoor arena is kinda small but I got a lot of good work in. My equitation was actually really good, and the instructor was very relaxed, and gave me free rein (haha) to fix what I needed to, while still pointing out things that I needed to work on, but mostly keeping quiet. This was also the barn that was most interested in IEA, so I'm hoping I can maybe start a team there. The horse I rode, Quinn, was very responsive and quiet and was easy to work with.

Trial three was yesterday, with my old trainer from my former stable. It was a great lesson with a lot of good work and my instructor was really happy with my equitation and how I worked with Amidor, the horse I was riding. Even though it was cold yesterday, we still got to wash his legs, they have a shower rack with warm water for the winter, which was really cool.

The only thing that I'm really worried about now that I've decided is picking which group I'd like to be in. I'm going to take group lessons on Saturdays, and I'm going to be in either Advanced Flatwork/Intermediate Jump or Beginning Jump. Beginning Jump will be with the trainer that I had my trial with, who I really liked, and she said that she would work with me in beginning jump to keep me at an appropriate level. Now, I've never ridden at a stable with levels, so I'm not sure what would qualify for advanced flatwork, but I feel as though the intermediate jump part is a good match for me, though I don't think it's with the same trainer. I'm going to call this week and find out and hopefully I'll have consistent lessons for quite some time. C:

@Ambassadorship / Internships / Working
I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not, but I'm a brand ambassador for K. Marie Equestrian, a really cool company that makes some super cute bags and accessories for equestrians. If you ever get a chance to be a brand ambassador, I'd say go for it! It's a lot of fun, and there are some amazing companies out there.

I'm also an intern for Style My Ride, so I get to work with the more fashion-oriented side of riding, which is something I've been in love with recently.

And I might also be starting my own company for horse related shirts, so that's really exciting too! Really, any business type endeavor with horses has been really interesting to me lately, so I've been really involved with horse stuff lately.

@General Fun Question
Do you have any fun horsey stuff on your Christmas wishlist? I'm asking for some Piper Breeches and some belts from one of my favorite brands. c:
