How much experience do you have training/riding horses? If you have a lot, then you should know the general idea, but I'm assuming you don't; you should definitely consider getting help from another horseman/woman, preferably a trainer, but anyone who has a lot of experience with horses should be able to help, like an instructor, rider, other horse owners, vet etc. You should always try and get a second opinion from someone more knowledgable than you and always ask for help, training a horse can be risky because if you don't do it the right way, they can develop bad habits or behavioral issues. Remember that you're always either training or untraining a horse every time you interact with it. If you don't praise your horse for performing a desired behavior, then it won't be able to learn that it did well, and vice versa; if you don't take control of potentially dangerous situations while they're still relatively harmless [nipping, kicking, charging, etc] then it will only escalate, because you're essentially letting your horse know that behavior is okay by not doing anything about it. Food is the fastest way to an animals heart, but don't rely on it to build your relationship on. A healthy relationship with a horse takes more than pets and treats, it requires mutual respect and a kind of "symbiosis" if you will. I've never trained a horse myself but these are just some basic things I've learned over the years about establishing a good connection with your horse. I'm sure some more people here who have exp training can help you more, but good luck in your endeavor, and congrats on your new family member! I love Arabians.
