Wow! Those are gorgeous. The Old English Tumblers are very pretty, and more interesting-looking than the Birminghams... hm...

Yeah, hawks are great. We've done a lot, although not recently- it's been about a year. Most don't survive though, since the most common injury is a broken wing and that almost never heals.

OK. I'll ask my dad, he knows a lot about architecture and stuff. And he'll be the one building it, since I have no idea how.

OK, I'll just buy some for my birds.

That's what I heard, that they need a break... 4 per month sounds good, though. That gives us plenty to eat and some to put in the freezer. Next year the freezer is gonna be stocked full of all my extra poultry, we won't even know what to do with all of it!

I've never heard of the Mondains. I'll look into them, but I heard that the Kings are the best "utility" pigeon, plus they're white, and supposedly white birds dress out looking better.

Well, if the Old English are good with cold, that might be a good breed for us. Right now it's just over forty mid-day, and it's supposed to get down to 14 on Sat., so we need a very cold tolerant bird. And this is just December, January and February are terrible!

Then it must be muffed. I didn't actually see the bird, but Midnight sent me a picture and the feet were feathered like a Cochin's. I think I might be able to find the picture, if I go through my emails.

Oh, I see! I'll do that then, that's easier. We have lots of 2X4s lying around, so less money than I thought! That's always good, especially since I totaled it all up at at least $300. :?

I'll be sure to get some of that. I might want to hand raise a few of whatever pet breed I pick, to keep or sell.

Our pigeons aren't very freindly, no. They're racers so we don't handle them that often, but they don't mind being handled. That said, the swallow I think was hand raised and imprinted on humans. He doesn't court the females and will attack anything. If you try to pet him he attacks you. Lol.

That sounds fun, still. What happens to the broken wing hawks? Do they get put down?

Well, you could build a square aviary with a triangle piece of wood blocking the gap.

Yep. And Swiss mondains are about 2-3lbs each full grown (so about 2lbs when they're ready to butcher) so you should get a 1lb a meat from each bird. That's how big my mondains were, anywho. I think kings are the same.
Nope, one isn't better than the other. But I like having Swiss mondains since:
1) they're Swiss. Different country, awesome, durrr. Lol
2) they're not that common. Got them off craigslist.
3) they look nicer

They're the same size as kings (I believe), but they just look more... Porpotionate. Less all ridiculous looking. And they come in lots of pretty colors. Though a white bird does dress out better. I had blacks, whites, and blacks with white flight feathers. The blacks and whites could mix breed and only throw all whites, all blacks, and black white flights. The black white flights threw a lot of all whites.

The old english so far have done great... I've only had 2- 1 died. Though. So they might not all be like that, but for such little birds I'm shocked how hardy they are. Ya know, aside from one of them dying. The swallow we got from the pound, so who knows what type of life he used to have, and what strain, so he might do fine in cold. Just our cold is -30. It was on -30 nights that I decided he needed to be spoiled. He lost a lot of weight and was shivering. If you like them, you can look into them and see if there's any local breeders,
Another bird I really liked were my muffed indian Fantial pigeons. Didnt keep them over winter, but they'd be wintered before. I liked them just because they were fabulous. Lol.
They aren't the best flyers. Come In lots of colors!
I also like frillbacks but not sure how they'd do in cold.

Also, for the record, we don't heat. Aside from the swallow, everyone's been fine. We've only had 1 week of cold weather (-30) but aside from that, it's been really warm. Come January & February (Aka -50 & -60) ill tell you how it is. Everyone's done fine though, even in the -30.

Oh, and its best to either cut up the 2x4's into sections and screw them to the wall, or take whole planks and screw them to wall. Just for cleaning purposes (they'll get nasty fast if you put them from one side to the other) and so you don't clunk your head, lol.

Yep, muffed = Cochins feet. Grouse feet look like this :
Image
Most rollers have grouse feet, most tumblers have muffed feet. Why? Rollers roll in the air ; keep flying. Tumblers fall out of the sky. So rollers need to fly better.
To learn more, go here. Not sure what slipper feet are - cant find anything on them.
http://mail.sumnercomm.net/~rmangile/Pi ... Muffs.html

Edit ;;
Some other breeds you can look into are pouters. Or, the Romanian naked neck pigeon. LOL. So weird, so funny. I actually kinda like them.
Image

Edit (again, lol);; not all tumblers / rollers have feathered feet - in fact, a lot don't. But when they do, tumblers usually have muffs and rollers have grouse, or slipper I suppose (based on the photo in the link)

Yes, usually, when it can't be healed. We have a local avian vet who does either discounted or charity work on birds for the organization (I can't remember exactly), and we take them to her first thing when we get them. Usually, if the wing's broken out towards the tip and still pretty fresh, it can be healed, but the closer it gets to the body the less likely it is to be fixed. She explained why once, but that was a while ago so I don't recall what she said.

Oh! That's a good idea. I'll see what I can do with that.

Wow... I looked up the Swiss Mondains... if I can find some of those, I'd definitely rather get them! They're very pretty, and not boring like the whites.
Although I can't help but wonder... hybrids usually tend to grow bigger/faster than purebreds... I learned that from my mom teaching me about plants and from my research on Cornish Cross... I wonder if I could create a slightly larger bird than either of the parents if I got Kings AND Mondains and crossed them? They're both very stocky looking birds, and they produce a nice meaty offspring.

The Old English Tumblers sound like they could be a really good choice, especially as I watch winter get tougher and tougher with every passing day. Right now we have what I'm guessing is about 1/2 a foot of snow on the ground outside right now, just from last night alone. (The sun hasn't come up yet, so I haven't been outside since like ten last night and that's just a guess, but then it was coming down fast and we had like 3 inches after just a couple hours, so I'm guessing at least that much.)
However, I just looked up the fantails, and they are beautiful! Especially the black ones; I don't know why, but that color in that breed really strikes a chord with me.
Are the frillbacks the ones that look like they have a big fuzzy fur coat of feathers over their shoulders? Those are awesome looking!

Oh wow... I saw the Naked Necks once before but kinda ruled them out since I figure they'd be difficult to find, probably pretty rare... but still, I've always had an affinity for ugly birds... guinea fowl used to be my favorite kind on fowl. Now I'm trying to breed the Naked Neck trait into my entire flock of chickens... lol Midnight would kill me if I got those, though! She already hates the NN's I have... and I think the pigeons might even be a step up the ugly chart... although, it's actually a very good trait for utility. At least in chickens. I know that in chickens the NN trait has proven to be disease resistant, need less protein, and they tend to have less feathers over the entire body and are easy to pluck, as well as improving breast size, carcass quality and overall feed conversion; so if those same traits cross over into the pigeons, maybe I could get one or two and try breeding them with my Kings or Mondains and creating a naked necked meat bird?
I've seen pictures of the pouters, they look kinda cool, but they kinda freak me out with the whole crop thing. It's just so strange.

OK, I'll do that instead.

Wow, pigeons seem so complicated compared to chickens, or maybe it's because they just seem so new to me! There seems to be so many different breeds with complicated names, and different types of the breed who are muffed or have grouse feet. Reminds me of when I was doing a little research into gamefowl- tons of different "bloodlines" since they were originally used for fighting- you had Sweaters and Roundheads and all kinds of ridiculous names that seemed to cross over a lot and get mixed up, and then there was all the different terms, oh no it was no longer a cockerel, that is a stag now!

Also, here's the picture of the pigeon:

Image

Now that I look at it again, it actually does look a lot like a fantail. And also, those *do* look like grouse feet after all, not muffed. I guess I'm either blind or have a terrible memory. XD Or possibly both.

Hi! Always nice to find another poultry lover. And I think you meant "American Gamefowl", and those birds in the top picture look like they definitely could be Americans, although the rooster's comb is a bit odd. If I remember correctly, American Games are supposed to have either pea or straight combs, and I'm not entirely sure what kind of comb that is on the rooster, I've never seen one like it before.

No, those 'dwarf's' are olanskd dwarves. If your in America, Australia, Switzerland, or Canada, those things are RARE. They *might* be a bit more common in Thailand, or Japan, but not anywhere else.
All you have are american gamefowl chickens. The roosters comb is deformed - could've been frostbite (does it get cold where you live?), or fighting, or a predator, or just a deformation.
Do you live in the United States?

also, your pigeons look like either roller pigeon crosses, or garden Fantials. Garden fantails are fantail pigeons that were bred to live in gardens. They can fly well to avoid hawks, but still have a bit of a fantail.

CCL: Yep, I love me some Swiss.. Lol. I'm not sure about the hybrid vigor - be cool if you could do an experiment. That is true for most chickens, ducks, etc.

LOL, I love ugly birds too. I'm just drawn to them.. It usually starts out 2 ways :
1) OMG THAT THING IS SO UGLY IT'S ADORABLE
Or
2) eww. Why would anyone want that? *2 days after looking at more pictures* OMG THAT THING IS SO UGLY IT'S ADORABLE

They can be a bit confusing, lol. And yes! Gamefowl just made me go bonkers. I was so confused since they were saying stag,.. So I kept imaging a deer... And was so confused.. Lol...
For the most part, they're pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Like, muff is no longer a beard - it's the feet.
Wanna know THE most confusing bird though?
Tipplers. Tipplers are a pigeon that flies. And just flies. For hours. It can fly for hours, and hours, and hours, and never touch the ground. But wanna know the confusing part?
i don't know if its a breed, or a trait. Like, rolling is a trait. There's breeds of rollers - like rakovnik roller pigeon - and tumbling is a trait, and then there's breeds, like old english tumblers. But no where will you find a breed if tippler. It's impossible. So, I don't know if I should be breeding for longer flyers and 'make' a tippler, or have to go buy a breed! *sigh*

Your picture isn't showing up, but if its like Andreea's birds, likely it's a garden fantail. They were bred so that people could keep pretty, showy birds NOT In a loft. They breed normally - finding a nest and such - but they're a domestic pigeon. They were bred so they can avoid hawks, but still pretty.
Btw, Andreea, whatever breed your birds are, they're all very pretty. I forgot to add that. I have no grizzle in my birds, sadly.

Haha! That's what me and mom used to say about my guinea rooster. "He's so ugly and mean," people would tell us, "why wouldn't you get rid of him" And I'd be like, "But he's so ugly he's cute!" And everyone would look at me like I'm crazy.

Yeah, the pigeon looked a lot like Andreea's birds. Big fantail, feathered feet. Crest was just a little sprig-thing poking out of the back of it's head. It was pure white, very pretty.

Ugh, had to cull one of my "meat rooster children" today. He was quite young (3-4 months, I don't remember exactly) and very skinny still, not much meat at all. He had dislocated his leg either last night, or this morning. Anyways, it was too bad- he was so pathetically sized I was intending on selling him as a pet rather than raising him for meat, since he was a little skittish but besides that very even tempered.

Oh well, I fully dressed him and he's in the fridge now, aging. Took me about 1 hour 10 minutes, which is a definite improvement on the two hours I usually spend on a big rooster, yet somehow it still didn't compare to the turkey, who took only an hour to dress. I so don't get that, but whatever... I took video of the entire thing (did that with the turkey too) and I'm gonna put it on Youtube. Let the flaming begin!
