lol! That's Chicken Math I believe.
XD

We've currently got ten. Were supposed to have 3 or 4 EE hens. Hatched 3, I had a feeling they were all roosters so we hatched 2 more. Thought those were roosters as well. (In the end turns out I WAS right)

Went and bought 3 pullets, a Buff Orpington, White Leghorn, and a Gold Sebright. Realized one was a bantam and wouldn't lay very big eggs so went back and bought 2 more pullets including another bantam, Black Orpington and Silver Sebright. Now we've got 5 original EE's (all roosters) 3 good egg layers (Orpingtons and Leghorn) and 2 bantams (Sebrights) just because they're cute. And now 'da Hubby decides he wants chocolate egg layers (Black Copper Marans) and I STILL want blue/green/olive egg layers. So we decide to order 15 pullets from Cackle Hatchery. While looking 'da Hubby falls in love with Brahmas because they have floofie feet and are huge and puffy. They look like sheepdog chickens he says.

So I order 5 Black Copper Marans, 5 Light Brahmas, and 5 EE's. They call me, they're out of both the Marans and Brahmas till February, can they substitute something else? So I say, sure. So we get 5 Welsummers, 5 Speckled Sussex, and my 5 EE's. Keep 2 EE's, 1 Speckled Sussex, and 1 Welsummer. Give the rest to my aunt.

So we're now up to 14 chickens when we were supposed to have 3 or 4.
So I give 4 of the EE roosters back to my Aunt but we keep one because he's a special needs chicken, having a slightly crossed beak. And we still want those Black Copper Marans and Light Brahmas so this spring we'll be placing another order of 15 chicks, keeping one of each breed and sending the rest to my Aunt's. So I'm already planning for 12 in all when we wanted 3 or 4 at the start.

And what I've taken from all of this is that the best way to feed my addiction is to make 'da Hubby think it was HIS idea and that it's something HE wants. That way he doesn't even realize he's getting me more chickens till it's too late. ^_^

Haha, so true. Chicken math works wonders. When my flock hit like 18 or 19 earlier this summer, mom said "No more, there's already too many!"
We currently have 28 birds.
And I really want more Hamburgs. They're the most amazing chickens I've ever had! There so vocal, and I love the two girls little arguments at roosting time. They always sit next to each other, and make these little growling (no, really, growling) noises and just lightly take turns pecking each other and ducking their heads. Of course, they're always pecking the other chickens too. I watched Deeks peck my 8+ pound meat rooster. In the eye. And all he did was make the "disgruntled rooster purr" and stick his head in his shoulder. Lol. I really want more of them. They're so useless, but so pretty and charismatic!

And the people with the Silver Penciled Rocks on BYC have never messaged me back... oh well, I guess I'll have to find another place to get 'em. Everyone seems to have only chicks, but I need adults dang it!

So, is anyone else getting a live turkey for Thanksgiving? Sorry if this offends anyone who doesn't do meat birds, I just had to ask.
This is my first time doing a turkey, and I've only done four chickens, so I'm real inexperienced with dressing but looking forward to this being a nice learning experience. Oh, and a question for anyone who's done them before, are they easier or harder to clean than chickens? I've been thinking it'll probably be harder in some ways, mainly because they're so big, but the larger size will probably also make everything a lot easier to see and sort out, right?

lol! Funny you should ask that question. I mentioned something to 'da Hubby just last night about getting a couple of turkeys for next year. His response? "Are you crazy!!??@"

Yeah,,, I've got a couple of months to work on him.

Seriously though I was thinking about trying to do an authentic Thanksgiving dinner next year. You know, venison and smoked trout. The kind of stuff they actually ate.

Ooh, that sounds great! Venison is delicious.
I kinda wanted to grow out some turkeys for this year, but by the time I really started thinking about it it would have taken them too long to get big, so we're just getting one off Craigslist for $50. Which would actually probably be cheaper than raising it ourselves would have, since I buy really expensive feed and I've heard they eat like crazy!

Nope, not chicken math, just chicken disease.

Chicken math is 'dad we need more chickens!'
'We only have 5'
'You have 8!'
'Well yeah, but ones a rooster.. And 2 aren't laying... So they don't count... We have 5 chickens.'

Show him Cochins.
They come in dozens of colors and are as tame as puppy dogs. Plus if he likes puff and feathered feet they will make him sit up and beg.

I have a Black Cochin hen and a Partridge Cochin hen, both are enormous and feathered from beak to claw.

So, guess what guys and gals!? I'm having accidental chicks! My Wyandotte hen was broody... and I did want to have some chicks, but mom doesn't want me to have any more until my coop is finished... but I put some eggs under her as a place holder, since the coop is almost done... fertile eggs. I meant to replace them with golf balls. Well, guess who has a goldfish memory?
...
Four days later, I realized the stupidity of what I'd done... but by then they would have started forming... and what kind of horrible person could kill those tiny little baby chicky embryos? Not me! So I'm expecting 4 babies on the 17th or 18th.
