I did that with my rat cage when they were little and it was hell. I got cut so many times, accidentally stabbed myself, and overall it was harder to clean the cage and stuff. Not doing that again. :c
Its no fun, but never had a problem cleaning the cages with wire wrapped around them. I make wire lids for my mice cages. I get cut all the time, lol
Well, we'll still see. I'm sort of re-thinking the hamster thing now, as much as I want one I'm starting to think if i'd really have the time to handle it. I'd have the time and money to clean it out, but I don't know if thats the case for spending time with it because sometimes i'm gone for like 3 days at a time.

Did you make sure they are the same sex? Did they come from the same store?
They are the same sex, both female. At least thats what the stores said. Unfortunately they aren't from the same store. every store we went to had only 1 gerbil..
That's your problem. You didn't introduce them properly. It starts out slow, having their cages next to each other (but not touching) and maybe placing bedding from their cages into each others cages so they'll learn the scent. Then, let them meet in a neutral territory and let them get to know each other. If one gerbil starts to attack, or do the "slamming" thing, then they're not a good match.
This happened to me with a gerbil I had. I had an older gerbil who's sister passed away and so I wanted to get another one for her so she wasn't lonely in her passing days. I introduced them well, everything was goood for the first two months and then the younger gerbil started attacking my older one. I didn't know if it was just play or not until I heard her squeaking and then one day I saw blood so I had to separate them and then get rid of the younger gerbil (not just because of that but because he bit ME as well too and ever since then he would rush to bite me whenever I reached in to feed him...)
The point is, you should separate them before things get worse. Try introducing them again slowly, and if that doesn't work then you're going to have to just keep them separated. I beg you, DON'T TRY TO MAKE IT WORK. Please, please, do not try to make it work if it's not working. You'll just end up with a bloody battle, or worse, a dead gerbil.
