Unfortunately for me, my eldest hamster has a tumor and a very bad infected eye that's hurting her so I'll probably be putting her down soon due to the fact I don't have a vet around me that cares for small animals and this will probably be easier on her. It sucks because last month my youngest hamster got struck down with a disease and passed too. Ive still got one little one left who's okay so from now on I doubt she'll be leaving my side

Hey, so I was wondering if anyone here knows some easy rat tricks? My dad said that I could get another rat (or hopefully two, since I don't have any right now and I don't want them to be lonely) and I want to get a baby so I can start training as soon as possible. I've always wanted to train my rats but have never really stuck to it long enough for them to learn anything :P Any help or ideas would be appreciated, thank you! (I do know how to take care of rats, I've had 8 in the past ^w^)

Also, does anybody know what the average life spans of mice and hamsters are?

Luna went to the vet today. She has an inner ear infection and a corneal ulcer from dragging her head. She's on antibiotics and eye drops. She may lose that eye or go blind in it. She is being separated into her own smaller QT cage and will be fed ensure, soy milk, baby food, and applesauce.

So Jones and Baze have been getting along great! Now I'm trying to intro Jones and Beast! Baze is back in the big cage with the twins, and Beast and Jones are in the small cage. I've got my door open so I can hear any fights, but so far nothing! They will be in together for a couple days provided there are no fights, then I'll try moving them all back into the big cage!

    Hey everyone! {Please snip is quoted}

    Look what we brought home yesterday :D

    Taming ideas?

    I think Daryl has been 'rumbling' at Hershel, is this them trying to sort dominance? There has been some chattering, but not much.

@Olivionary
Congrats on your new pigs! They look adorable! For taming ideas, just get them out very often and give them food when you have them out. Works almost every time ;)
As for the rumbling, double check they are both of the same gender. That could be a sign of mating or dominance as you said. They are probably trying to figure out who is top pig!

@Gryffindor's Sword

I did get them from pets at home which did hav me worried about issues in gender, but the girl checked them while we were there, so I hope they are both boys XD Hershey is the most adventurous, but Daryl is the most dominant by the looks of it.

My two gerbils were fine this morning when i got home from a friends... since then i napped several times, babysat my sisters and then took a shower. Immediately after my shower, i came downstairs and the healthier of the two gerbils was dead (They are brothers and were bought together over 2 years ago... I think closer to 3 or 4). They were both snuggled up like they were sleeping so i didn't notice it until i did my routinely counts of fish and stares at my rodents to check if they are all breathing.

So i prepared a box and put some bedding in the box and then the dead gerbil due to be buried tomorrow, but upon picking him up, I noticed that most of his foot was gone. I then had to run to the bathroom to throw up.

How was almost half of his foot missing in less than a day (as if flesh stripped from the bone as well as muscle and some of the bone.)

Its a wild defence rodents use, dead cagemates will start to smell and make it more obvious to predators, if they eat them then predators are less likely to find them, useless in captivity but they don't know that

That cage is not suitable for guinea pigs

That cage is completely suitable for guinea pigs. I've had four guinea pigs and used those cages all my life. They were specifically made for guinea pigs...

Hi... I'm new here :) I just got two female rats about two weeks ago, named Moka (4 month old dumbo) and Diva (2 month old fancy). They get along like sisters, but when it comes to me... Well, Diva has been out of her cage in my hands a few times and never bites, and shows very little fear. She just needs more socialising. But Moka is the shyest thing ever. I have not been able to pick her up once since I brought her home. I can stroke her back a little, but even this leaves her cringing away from me. She'll come when I've got food, but as soon as she knows I have none, she scuttles away to her little rat-house. I have had very tame rats, mice, and hamsters before, but I've yet to get to Moka. I was just wondering if any of you guys know any good taming tricks for shy rats? Or if she'll just come around on er own? Thank you!
