So I'm debating a rescue rat from an organization a couple states over. They have a lone male that is a lover and is exactly the type of rat I'm looking for. It would be a couple weeks before I can go get him and by the time his quarantine is over my rats would be done with meds and should be in good shape.

A little hesitant because of my recent ratty health scare, especially since Salt got sick without outside elements.

Thoughts?

as long as you see improvement with salt and there are no new health problems being brought forth by the new rat, i don't see why not.

i'm having a bit of a debate with new rats as well. there are two male rats in the paper for free (fancy/dumbo and a hairless) and no one where i live really appreciates rats (they are vermin here). they have been hand-raised from a breeder. i want to adopt them but i want to get a bigger cage first, even though technically mine can hold four rats; and i want to make sure navin's porphyrin leakage is just because of the move and the dusty bedding he came with. the other rats have no problems that the owner knows of, but my parents are 100% against a hairless rat.

It's been a couple days since I started debating contacting the rescue but I finally decided to do so.

It seems that he may possibly stay a loner, but he's great with people... If I do adopt him I would try my best to incorporate him into my colony but he is several months older than my boys and has been kept alone since he was adopted so it may take time. They said he doesn't attack other males but gets defensive if play gets too rough. They only tried him with one set of established much older brothers so it is possible that him being the oldest rat would make a difference with my colony. Not going to get my hopes up and I won't fault him if it doesn't work.

I submitted my application so we'll see how it goes.

If your parents are against a hairless rat do you think it could work out? Also, you're right about waiting until you see if anything comes from the signs of respiratory problems. I would wait at least two weeks to rule out anything that could be passed on to new rats. You should always quarantine so you would need an extra cage regardless to protect the current and new rats, plus, you would need to have them in separate areas of the house during this time and wash your hands and change clothes, etc if you've had them crawling on you before switching between rat rooms.

Have you found a rat vet in your area? It's nice to know ahead of time where one is just in case you have an emergency.

my parents really can't say no if i do get the hairless rat because they aren't paying for the rats at all or taking care of them. i try to work with them, though, and if it comes down to them trying to endanger it's life i'll definitely avoid the new males altogether since they can't be split.
i'm looking at other cages now regardless and i've managed to find a double ferret nation for $100 on craigslist. only problem is that it's in the next state and it'd take around 4 hours to get it here and back. however, it'd be worth it considering that it'd have enough room for my boys and more.

i've done my best to watch over them, and i know respiratory problems can be spread -- bernard hasn't showed any signs of problems aside from one day when he woke up with a little bit of porphyrin crusted over his nose. navin's been fine aside from this morning when they play-fight and get a little rough (then he got it badly around his nose).
just in case, though, there is a rodent vet literally five miles up the road and i've contacted them for prices and if they can do a thorough check-up.

You might consider getting them a health exam, one of my rats had sniffles for about a week and was being treated with a mild antibiotic but Salty didn't show any signs whatsoever before he had full on pneumonia. Were they expensive for exams?

Sounds good about the ferret nation, adult males should be safe in that cage!

currently the vet hasn't even gotten back to me. it's been two days today. i may have to just show up at their office and ask.

Do you know where I can find the spot on Ivermectin? I hate the oral meds it takes me so long to fight with them over it. Sounds much easier to use that.
And yes, I've been working my butt off all day cleaning all of their things, washing down their cage and giving them all a bath to help. I currently use Softwood Petco brand bedding as it's the largest bag of bedding I can find, non-dusty and they've all done very well on it. I had so many sick rats while using Carefresh, it was just too dusty.

I'm not sure where you are, I'm in the UK. If you're in the UK you can order it online which is probably the easiest way to get it.

Wait - I just realised that you have said petco. If you search "Pharma Q Ivermectin" you might find results. Otherwise there's these two UK websites that might ship abroad:

Sugar is a Sapphire WW girl, almost two years old.
Freckle is a Pearl WW girl, almost 1 1/2 years.
Spice was Sugar's littermate, and she is an Agouti WW girl, who passed away before she was 1 1/2.

On another note :

These are the two pups I've decided to keep from Velvet and Isobel's litter. I believe they are both from Velvet's litter and I may decide to keep one from Isobel's litter too, but for now I've decided on these two little cuties. I love them to death.
