Don't get me started.
Me: Why don't we train him instead of electrocuting him?
Dad: Don't sass me.
Me: I'm not sassing you. It was a serious suggestion.
Dad: This is training him. He knows what no is. He knows I don't like him barking at horses and other dogs. He gets two nos and that's all the warning he gets. He's a grown man.
"Grown man". Aaaaah, I can't stand it when he calls Brody a grown man. He's not a man, he's a dog. He shouldn't be expected to act like a "man"-- in standards of pride, dignity, "respect", or anything like that. I'm not overreacting, am I? The way he says Brody needs to act like a grown man is... stupid.
I can even pinpoint all the reasons why he barks, too. Mainly boredom. But if I brougt those reasons up, he'd get mad at me for sassing him, nagging, and complaining. Ugh, no, I just want our dogs to live the best lives possible.
You're totally right to be annoyed. There's a reason it's common to describe dogs as having the minds of a toddler. For you to treat your dog like he's an adult human is just stupid.
Is there any way you can take the initiative and start walking them and giving them puzzle toys? Even something as simple as a cardboard box full of food? That's pretty much what I did with Clemmy. Soon as she arrived at my house to live here, we went for an hour long walk cause I already knew she had too much energy. Then again, my situation is/was fairly different from yours.
