Re: Dog Owner Chat!

Postby ~Serenade~ » Mon May 20, 2013 3:30 pm

I have a question... So I'm talking to a local meat rabbit place who says that they will give me all the stuff they normally throw away when butchering the rabbits for free. I know I want the organs and such as she can eat those, but can I do something with the fur? Maybe make it into a toy of some sort, but how do I clean/dry it?

Any ideas would be helpful, thanks!

Dog breeding and genetics are fascinating. What do you guys hope to accomplish through the breeding? What are the goals for the litter? =)

WELL, we expect that we will sell the puppies for a profit so we can move into a bigger house

Oh.. :( I was under the impression most breeders never make a profit on the pups since so much money goes into the litter and parents? I mean.. Theres health testing, shows, events, prenatal care such as ultrasounds.. etc. =) Am I wrong? I've never bred before. ^^;

No, your fully right, it's just that certain dogs, cost a lot more than others. Take a Neapolitan mastiff for an example. Look up how much they are and it is a lot. The coloring on my dog is very rare so his pups will cost more depending on what the mother looks like. :D Dhere is a pic of a dog in which has the same coloring. It is VERY rare for a mastiff to be that color.

Breeding for money or the experience, IMO, is horrible. No offense, but using your dogs as some money-making object is wrong, no matter how rare they are. Dogs should only be bred by proffessionals, who have the knowledge and the intent to better their breed in mind. Cardinal, it's true most -reputable- breeders don't make even.

If you don't health test, temperament test, show, etc. and just generally have no clue on how to properly care for a b**** and her pups, you have NO business breeding. Sorry to be blunt but it's the truth. Breeding your dog unproffessionally and just for the money is dangerous and irresponsible.

The dog overpopulation crisis we have right now is due to backyard breeders and puppy mills - aka irresponsible people who breed with no care for the health of the dogs; they only care about money, or in some cases, because they just want to experience birth, both of which are not viable reasons. Dogs are dying by the thousands daily in shelters across the world. Is experiencing the birth of badly bred dogs, or a few bucks, seriously worth the guilt you should have for contributing to the deaths of many more dogs?

I love breeders, and will be going through one in the near future. But backyard breeders and puppy mills? I am passionately against. I find it sickening.

I honestly am not a professional breeder but that does not mean I don't take care of the dogs!! I have experienced dog needing before and it was enjoyable, seeing all them pups grow up. Have you ever experienced the feeling when you give a child a dog?it makes me so happy to see that smile of the kid. I don't always do breading for money. So stop going around budgeting people before you even know the whole story.

You are not a reputable breeder. I'm not "budgeting"? Anything. Like I said, the experience or money is a terrible reason to breed. Plain and simple. If you do not health test and do everything else a reputable breeder does, you will be producing unhealthy pups with potential temperament problems. Pups and adult dogs alike dying in shelters isn't happy or cute. If that dog you gave to a child dies at five from a genetic disease, that's not happy.

Seriously, be responsible. There are plenty of reputable breeders and shelters people can buy from, all the while helping overpopulation, not adding to the problem.

What types of events/sports will you guys be participating in? How do you go about getting started in conformation showing and such? I plan to enter my lady in events when she's older, but it'll have do be on a PAL registry since she's a mutt. :)

How far back does your fellas pedigree go? I remember seeing some from the early 1800's and it was amazing how much some breeds has changed! Pedigrees are really neat things.

What are some health issues that come along with mastiffs? Do you guys do just that standard OFA, CERF, cardio, and thyriod? Is vWD an issue with these dogs? Anything else to test for/look for? What would make you guys cull him from breeding/not breed him? I mean like.. When breeding what are some red flags you'd look for in terms of health and temperment?

Sorry for all the questions. ^^; I just find it interesting!
