Puppies SHOULD NOT be taken from their litter-mates before 8 weeks of age. 8 weeks is also, in addition to what Eru mentioned above the ideal age to evaluate pups for temperaments and body structure. In most states (assuming you are located in the USA) it is ILLEGAL to sell / buy a puppy under 8 weeks of age.

We have a Basseagle (Basset x Beagle) in our rescue who was bought at 6 weeks of age from Uncle Bills (Large petstore in the area) just six months ago. He has an absolutely atrocious temperament because he never learned any-better. Good socialization with lots of different people and dogs in lots of different places is the key at this point to make Bowden grow into a stable adult.

Can't say I agree with designer breeds but Bowden is a cutie.

Someone already said "puppies should not be taken from their mothers at that age". Please, everyone, don't start this into an argument. It's going to be really sad if a "new dog" celebration post turns into a nasty argument about where this dog was bred and from.

Just pay extra attention to socializing and all. ^-^ Congratulations on Bowden, he is pretty cute though I've never really had a big liking for beagles. Hope he turns into a good companion. :3

Thank you, Juke. I would like to keep this topic to only about Bowden, not about the U.S federal laws. We got him for free, anyways.

We're a family of seven, so he'll definitely get lots of socialization.

Um... not trying to start a fight or anything but you do realize socializing with strangers and socializing with immediate family are two totally different things, right? He needs to be socialized in a ton of different places, not just in your home or while out on walks. Also, it's not just with people but with dogs too. And cats and other animals, if you want him to leave peacably with them.

I thought I said not to make it an argument/flame war. Please, don't keep it going as it's just going to be spam.

Bowden is simply precious! My puppy (Although she is 2) Ella behaves like a puppy even if she is two. Got a little too much puppy left in her at this point xD But I hope you and your new family member have a good time! ^^

I thought I said not to make it an argument/flame war. Please, don't keep it going as it's just going to be spam.

Giving you advice because people are genuinely concerned about the well-being of your dog is not "starting an argument." Getting offended and yelling at people to not say anything except how cute your dog is IS starting an argument, and is very immature.

People are trying to politely inform you that the puppy will need a lot of exposure to other people and animals, especially outside your immediate family and circle of friends (i.e. strangers to the puppy) so that it will have a better chance of not growing up to be insecure or fearful.

My backyard bred Boston terrier wasn't properly socialized with other dogs because we thought since she got along fine with OUR dog, that meant she was okay with dogs. We were wrong. People are trying to HELP you so that you don't make the same kind of mistake I did. They're not insulting you or saying you're a bad owner (although whoever gave you an underage puppy certainly is), they're trying to give you advice.

That's what people on an animal forum do when you get a new puppy and make a topic about it. They try to offer helpful tips and advice. If you choose to get angry at people for posting something besides how cute your puppy is, you're the one in the wrong. This is animal chatter, not compliment-the-OP chatter.

I think I've heard it well enough now, but thanks for informing me. :)
