I ride a grey 13ishh icelandic horse every Sunday, and even though he is around 20 years now -but he still holds the heart of a 5 year old- . I've ridden him for almost 3 years now and he is just such a loving boy (even though he did chase me/try to kick me from time to time in the early stages of our 'relationship' when I tried to catch him in the paddock. Now he just flattens his ear from time to time or just starts walking, but with a little help of treats he's improving towards me :3) who loves adventure and just go hacking into the woods - he is a completely different horse while hacking than when he is ridden on the arena, classical schooling horse - and race his buddy. I ride him almost always bareback as I just love the freeing feeling it gives you <3 It makes me feel like some sort of an native american riding along meadows with only a bridle and feeling the movements of the horse under me. Besides, he loves it aswell as there are no girths pressing on his tummy!
And for the ones interested, this is Pytur <3

Oh wow, he's really gorgeous :3 I bet he's a nightmare to keep clean though ^_^

Although there aren't any barns in my area, I know a few people who board others's horses for them. I think its probably around $500-600 a month, and theres no arena or anything, really not even a barn, just run ins.

@Shoeing:
We sometimes do our own shoeing, depending if we have time. But the farrier we use when we don't have time runs at $90-100 for full shoes, although I'm sure it varies on shoe type. But we always supply shoes and take our horses to his place, so that brings it down to $50 a horse to be fully shod for us. We also always have him do our miniature horses as he uses a grinder instead of nippers, and its much better in my opinion.

@Riding:
So, my cousin brought her horse over to our house today and we were riding around in our arena, and we practiced barrels and poles. And her horse, Lady, is a pretty lazy horse, and S (my cousin), forgot her spurs so I let her use some of mine. Very dull rowels, and when she put them on and got on Lady, she was fine. But when she asked Lady to go, she started bucking and kicked me in the leg (I was on Queso). I'm super happy she missed Queso, although it wasn't a hard buck/kick, so my leg isn't even sore. she ended up just loping her around the arena a bit and she calmed down substantially. She's had spurs used on her before so I don't know why she acted so bad. But she is sorted out now so its all good. I was quite impressed with her pole runs though, once she got the spurs on she did really well for really never running poles. She didn't try the barrels with spurs because I had already put them up and switched to poles, but I think they would do good there too, probably mark in 3D to 4D.

Missed?
There's something to be said for a place that hasn't had all the rough rode out of it.

GUH, I really want my new SD card to get here asap. We just got a new boy and he's freaking adorable <3 He's a 15hh mix-breed, built sort of like a large pony. He's got great proportions, a gorgeous face, and just the prettiest neckline~ He's got no name yet, but the girl who'll be working with him during his trial/training week wants to name him after something strong and solid (Chevy seems to be her favorite at the moment). He's a black and white paint, mostly black, but with white stockings and a big white crescent across his butt, so I kind of like the idea of a moon-related name. x]

Garland is still here, btw, along with Ellie. I was really surprised to see them. Cupid is gone, unfortunately, but I'm trying not to think about that. :C
We have so many empty stalls now. Sammy and Poggle finally went to their new homes, Jazz and Cupid went to auction, Nik's been in his new home for a couple weeks now. It's kind of weird having empty stalls, especially in upper barn, were Sammy and Nik lived. It always felt small to me, but now it seems so much bigger.

Spent a little time with Gin today too when there was a lull in activity. He's much sweeter and friendlier than I remember him being. I really hope I like how he rides, I'm so ready for a lease and his lease would be so much more affordable than the $250 a month I'd have to pay for Grande or any of the other schoolhorses.

So, tomorrow I start my very first riding lesson. I've been wiggling in excitement for a few days. Its right after school for me tomorrow. Do any of you have any advice? I'm gong into this pretty blind as of what is expected, so if you have any words of wisdom, I would be willing to listen. Thanks! :3

Western. But I might try english... I'm very inexperienced, I'm just a pleasure rider as of now. Which do you suggest I try? My stable has both very good instructors in each.

No. I will not be jumping, showing or any sort of racing anytime soon. I'm mostly just learning basics, but eventually I would like to do maybe competitive trail, either in the field or show. And that would be western. And if I get comfortable and over my fear of falling, I might try jumping. But that's a longshot. I'm as of now, a pleasure trail rider, western. My biggest deciding factor on which style is comfort. Is english more comfortable than western? I would think the western would be a smoother style, though I may be wrong.
