Hime wrote:@Scarlet: Oookay... The very basic snaffle bit types, there are more though but these are softest and most common I think.
Loose ring single joint snaffle
Eggbutt three piece(/double joint) snaffle
D-ring single joint snaffle
Straight bar/mullen mouth loose ring bit
Eggbutt, loose ring and D-ring are the ring types for snaffle bits. Mix and match with any mouth piece type as you want and the result is a snaffle bit.
Double joint, single joint and mullen mouth/straight bar are mouth piece types, which can be found in about all kind of bits(such as snaffle, pelham and curb). Different types of single and double jointed snaffle bits are probably the most common bits used in english riding. The look of the double joints' middle piece might vary, since by altering the shape the effect/feel of the bit is slightly different. Mullen mouth snaffle bits tend to be rubber mostly, though there are metal ones as well and straight bar curb bits are almost always metal.

Then there's the curb bits. Very basic english curb. In english you will mostly see these on higher level dressage shows. And in that case used in double bridle along with brandoon, which is slimmer version of some sort of snaffle bit. You will see lots of curbs on western horses, but I will not comment on those...
Next there's pelham. It's sort of combined snaffle and curb(sort of like riding in double bridle with only one bit I suppose). It can be ridden with either double reins, which is when you can choose if you want to ride with snaffle or curb. Or it can be ridden with one set of reins by using delta piece to connect the snaffle and curb rings(shown in the picture).
Then there are gags, which have some leverage but are quite not like curb. There are couple different types of gags. This one, is what I basically know as just gag. While this one is considered as a gag as well, but I know it by the name olympia or pessoa. Both are something I'd call slow leverage, meaning they first effect the mouth and then, if using stronger aids the poll, especially I think the pessoa does that. There's also elevator bit that is considered a gag, about the same way of effect as the pessoa.

Thank you Hime! That helps immensely :D

So I just got done riding Malibu today.(Again in the English saddle)

I was trotting for like twenty minutes straight.
.... Ohhhh my legs xDDD It felt good though!

Probably won't feel so good tomorrow though...

And that's not it!
I was asking Malibu to speed up her trot a little as we were going around a corner, then she started to canter for a bit before trotting again.
I've never done much cantering in an English saddle before so I was like: "... I wanna try that again. Huehuehue."

So then I started to canter again xDD She picked up both of her leads correctly too so that was good.
It was actually easier for me to sit her canter in an English saddle than it was in my western one o.o That kinda shocked me! xD

I'm having a lot of fun though :) I'm glad I decided to get the saddle.

    Personally I'm really pleased with her! Her eq has gotten so much better. She's only been riding for 6 months, and jumping for 3. The main thing I see is that she's jumping ahead of Lucky and is all over his neck when he's only jumping a 1 foot vertical.

@Monchele: Her hands are too far forwards and she is too out of the saddle and is lying on top of his neck. It's a small jump so no need to come out of the saddle. She needs to try and push her bottom back in the saddle and bring her hands down the neck a bit more and try to life her body up in a fold but not onto the horse's neck otherwise it will make them land wrong would will lead to an injury or a fall for both horse and rider. Hope this helped :]

I judged your friend A a while ago but you never saw it. I'll try again c:

Too extreme of an upper body motion. She needs to put her bottom back into the saddle more and get off her horses neck. She needs to be more independent with her body, so if the horse refuses, spooks, bolts, etc then she'll be able to sit it better. If she moved her hands down the necks few inches then she's still have a nice release and still be balanced over the top of the jump. Then push her heel down and forward a bit. That big of a movement isn't necessary over this smaller jump :)

@Timaeus:
Yeah. My arm doesn't hurt so bad right now but my jaw is swolen and my neck is sore. Other than that, feelin great and we went on a horn hunting expedition today. Ain't no rest for the wicked!!!

@Scarlet:
Well, theres mainly 2 different types of bits (I really only know western, but assuming its the same for English), snaffles and shankeds. Snaffle bits don't have shanks, they come in things like eggbutt, d-ring, O ring, etc. With different mouthpieces like smooth wire, twisted wire, etc and then there are different metals, like Nickel, and copper etc. Shanked bits come in a ton of different mouthpieces and shanks and metals. There are correction bits, curb bits, all kinds. EDIT: Hime pretty well covered it :)
There's something to be said for a place that hasn't had all the rough rode out of it.

there're also curb bits and hackmore bits. curb bits are like a straight bit, but have a curve in the middle. i use them and the horse listens to them, but they chew it.... hackmore bits are for horses that dont like bits in there mouths. i haevnt use one before, but we might for my horse. some horses dont like bits in their mouths hackmore bits are good for that.

My horse Malibu is a good example ^^ She fights me if I try to get near her with a bit lol.

So I use either a bosal hackamore or my rope halter.

There are also mechanical hackamores that come in various styles as well ^^

I thought hackamores didn't have bits? Woah nthanks for the help everyone. It's one thing I hardly know anything about x.x
I'm excited to see my friend in June :3 I'm going to try riding her Tennessee walking horse and go trail riding and everything! She owns two horses on her land. I cannot wait! Maybe canter some western xD I only ride in a western saddle while trail riding, but at one place they take you to an open field and let you canter. It's awesome. That and I've cantered a Percheron before all the way through an empty field and that was amazing xD

They don't ^^ I don't quite understand why the other person used the term bit while describing a hackamore... Huh..
