Isn't he? He's finally starting o settle down and be able to canter jumps. He's come a long way since they got him. First time I rode him, he tried to go around every pile and if you cantered him, he took off like he was at the races. But he's getting so much better and I'm so proud of him c:

Ok, I totally killed my chances to ever ride her again. Now I'll be stuck on beginner horses forever. Maybe I should find a different barn...

Urgh... This thread moves so fast. >_< lol
@smokey: Lol... How about starting with basic terms, basic colors and how they go? Chestnut, black and bay. Since all dilutions and patterns just add or alter the them somehow, and they are also pretty simple to understand once you grasp the basic idea. (: I might not know every fancy sciece like name, so... I try make it simple as well.... ^^'

For starters, things that make learning easier: Locus is a place in the gene. And one locus has two alleles, one inherited from the mother and one from the father(foal get's it's genes 50/50 from each parent, which half they get from their parent is random). So a certain color can't just skip a generation or two and then magically pop up on a foal(silver on chestnuts and certain paint patterns might appear to do that, but in reality they have been passed on from one horse to another, but not necessary so that they can be recogniced as the pattern(small marks) or stay completely hidden(silver+chestnut=chesnut looking horse)). Each locus(talking just about those related to color) is responsible for one type of coloration, and alleles make that coloration either visible or not, but in some cases the horse may have certain allele but it is not shown to the eye(phenotype). Later applies especially with the basic colors and how they are passed on, as well as silver on chestnuts(or horse with chestnut as base color, like palomino).
Usually when horse has certain allele that effects it's looks it's marked as capital letter while allele with no effect is small letter or 'n'. For example if a horse would have one allele causing tobiano pattern it would be Tt or T/n. This would mean the horse is heterozygous tobiano and in theory half of it's foals would be tobiano by inheriting the T allele. But if the horse would have 2 tobiano alleles(TT), meaning it's homozygous, all it's foals would be tobiano as they would always inherit the T allele.
Okay, so base colors(no thinking on dilutions): Basically you got two locuses that are responsible whether the horse is chestnut, black or bay. Extension/Red factor(E) and Agouti(A). Extension is responsible for red pigmentation, while agouti controls the amount of black. The alleles horse has in these locuses always matter, horse can not simply have a non effective allele(like they can with dilutions and patterns), but the trick is it doesn't have to show.
Red Factor(chetnut or not), E-dominant allele, e-recessive: Chestnut color requires two recessive e alleles, but then hides the effect of the agouti locus. Also two chestnuts can only have chestnut foals, because each parent will always give the foal a e allele.
If a horse has one E allele it's either black or bay, depending on the agouti. If a horse has 2 E alleles it can only have black or bay foals, no matter what color the other parent is.
Agouti(Black or bay), A-dominant allele(bay), a-recessive allele(black): So bay wins over black. Horse has one or two A alleles, it's bay. 2 a alleles it's black. Horse with alleles AA can have only bay foals if the foal does not get e-allele from both of it's parents. Two black horses will have black foals, but also only without the two e-alleles intefering(which would result chestnut foal)
How base colors can pop up in the foal depending on the parents-chart(c=chestnut, a=bay, b=black) when it's not know what alleles the horse actually has other than what is visible(c=ee ??, a=E? A?, b=E?aa):
c+c= c
b+b= b/c
a+a= a/b/c
c+b= a/b/c
c+a= a/b/c
a+b= a/b/c
As seen everything is possible in many cases, but the horse's pedigree(+full siblings or sometimes even half siblings) might help out some and if it already has foals of it's own. Pedigree tells what it could have and foals what the horse actually has. Example: A bay mare gives birth to a chestnut foal, we then know it's Ee A? for sure, then if it later has a black foal we know it's Ee Aa.

Too much on one go? ^^' Seriously ask if you don't understand something since I typed this up pretty fast and mostly out of my memory.

Had fun in the class today. Learnt bunch of new stuff, like I didn't know that Icelandics actually have an offical class that is something like Equitation. :o Ofcourse not totally the same, but basically the rider is jugded as well and how harmonous the pair is. Which is bit what they do in Gaedingakeppni, but then again not. XD Naturally there were also things that I already knew, but still got some extra info on those as well. Also one of the 'students' was a certified farrier so she brought in some perspective of her own when it came to shoing. Then I saw bunch of people that I already knew, but I don't see so often, as well as few new people. :) Suprisingly there was also two people with actually very little Icelandic horse experience(year or two, but with some other horse backround) and they were aiming to become riding instructors specialiced in Icelandic horse riding. In the later half of the lesson we watched some pace runs from last years Nordic Champion ships, as well as A-finals from five and four gait. They were freaking awsome. O_O Then in the end we did this fun exercise. We divided in pairs and each jugded two four gait performances while other worked as your secretary. XD First it was kinda akward, but them we got into it more. And actually the points we gave the riders weren't always that off from what they actually got. Though I was maybe bit too nice in few cases, like I gave overall kinda high scores for one and then probably couple too high scores for the other... But it was for fun, so it didn't really matter. XD
Then after the class ended I went to say hi to Heta and groomed her some and gave her her food. They actually got huge round bales put into most of the paddocks today so she's in heaven now. XD Food all day long, especially if she gets to stay out for the nights. R said it's not supposed to be very 'strong' hay so they shouldn't get too fat from it, it's just to keep them busy and warm now in winter. But we'll see how it turns out. I'm sure the older geldings won't mind some extra to eat or R's WB(who get's cold easily), but the others might...
Can we pretend that the airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now...

Sorry for the really late response, but a big thank you to the ones who gave me some information or tips about English riding! It may come in handy once I start my first English lesson! :3

Note;; Im not new to riding, it's just my parents want me to get into English rather then just staying with Western. x3
i barely use this account lol?
but I came here to add this: taeng is my younger sister.
please don't ban her, she's only interested in roleplaying.
        thank you.

I show her in 4H shows, as there aren't any open shows around here. Here is mostly ag, like market animals. There are open shows for swine, steers, lambs etc. But not rabbits. But at my 4H show which is during the fair there are 3 classes; Breed, Fur and Showmanship. I showed Maybelline in all 3 last year but she has marbled eyes (at the time I didn't know it was a DQ), and the judge gave me a red ribbon in Breed and dismissed me. So this year I am just showing her in Showmanship and Fur. She does really great in fur. Showmanship last year the judge was terrible, she didn't have us show our rabbits, instead, she told us all to demonstrate how we would do something like, check the feet, and she would watch us, we weren't even allowed to speak to her to tell her what we were doing. So ridiculous. This year should be better though because I am now counted as a Senior in 4H and we go to the table with the judge one at a time and do a full presentation. Hopefully the judge will be different. Also, last year in Showmanship, she judged me poorly because (it was Maybelline's first show), Maybelline kept jumping around and trying to eat the carpet. Of course at our meetings during the year, she didn't do any of that and we practiced exactly like a show -.- Anyway, I've seen the judge's card and it says at the top of the card: Try not to judge the showman on how the rabbit acts. So what does she do? Judge me on how my rabbit acted. Ugh. Rabbit showing isn't something I am 100% into though, it is more of a sideline deal. Horses come first, then Photography then Rabbits. I used to do market swine and didn't do terribly, but the judge was a butthead. I'm not going to spam this post up with that story, but if you want to hear it PM me (: Yeah Bareback Buck is pretty fun. A lady who is a leader in our 4H club has a draft horse that we trick ride on, and two of my friends were riding her in bareback buck lol. She is a pretty good horse. Although, I was trickriding on her one time and I had to stand on my knees on her back while she was walking around, and my boots ( I wear square toes), were back behind the pad, and poked her and she bucked. I was laughing my head off though. I stayed on my knees with my arms straight out on either side the entire time, she is a pretty smooth bucker hehehehehehe.

@Hime:
Well, pretty much all of the genetics stuff...

Bluebird I think you missed that ^^

@Hime:
That makes sense. It is really interesting stuff. What type of genes would a Palomino have?

@Opal:
Yes I did miss it XD
Broken Horn saddles are really nice. I was looking at buying one last week but I don't have the money right now lol.
There's something to be said for a place that hasn't had all the rough rode out of it.

anybody setting little goals for 2013?
I love doing this :) maybe you should all try it?
write a list on a page of small, accessible goals for the next 12 months
stick this page on your wall and imagine what the feeling would be to achieve the very last one
then start working your way down it, ticking each goal off as you achieve it :D
be really specific though, don't just say "be more collected for dressage". instead, examine your judge's comments from your last test where they told you to collect more, say you got a 6 for that move. set your goal as "get a 7 for my medium trot" or something similar! I think this is really good for confidence :)

my list of goals so far!

do an xc go as you please
jump 2'9" in an xc show (either two phase or one day event)
jump an open working hunter class
score 55% on a prelim dressage test
win a championship at a working hunter show
get placed in a 1m showjumping class
retain my charity school's showjumping title for the second year running
compete at an international equestrian centre in the south of ireland
win at least £20 prize money in a class (I've won £15 before, it's only another little step up!:P)

and I'm still working on them! we could all do it and then track our progress together that would be so fun

Just because we did something similar to it doesn't mean that others wouldn't like to hear Cruising's goals or set more specific goals.

As for bareback- sit back. Sit on your pockets, if you are in jeans, or on pretend pockets if you don't have any. Heels and knees down to keep your center of gravity lower down and more stable. And don't be afraid to grab mane if you feel like you might tumble :)

@Cruising- those seem like very good goals! My more specific, smaller goals:
-Go to more shows than last year
-Show in a Hunt Seat Eq class (pattern class)
- Fix my hand issue
-School 1st level dressage
-Beat my 65% score in dressage
-Get a job so I can ride more

@bareback issue - practice makes perfect :) but yes sit back a lot and keep all your weight downwards and try not to grip too much with your knees or you will bounce. grab a hunk of mane if you do get unbalanced because it will hurt your horse if you don't keep balanced :)

@toppyrocks thanks! what is your hand issue?:) those are good goals, I hope you achieve them! :D
