So, my dad has his own fish tank. It is a 29 gal saltwater tank. He has two clownfish along with several other fish. One of the clown fish has been acting weird for a while now. He usually just lays against the sides of the tank (particularly the corner) and you can tell he isn't ok when he swims. It looks like he struggles. I keep telling him about it but he thinks that he is just resting. I'm just not sure. Here is a picture I took a few minutes ago. (Warning: I took it with my iPod. T.T )

Not sure what that would be especially without a video of the swimming, but that is 100% not just resting.

At first, I suspected it was a swimbladder problem from stunted growth ( the poor thing's tank is way too small, and you can probably tell from the picture below, and I really want him to have a bigger one, but I just don't have the money for it and my parents just won't let me. Trust me, if I could, I would. I would buy a bigger one. ;n; ), but then I remembered that he has white spots on his tail and fins.

I picked up a treatment called gold disease safe from the pet shop, and when I got home, I did an around 40% water change, using bioactive tapsafe ( which my sister never uses ) and that treatment. I used one pipette of it as the dosage, as the bottle said to.

If it is white spot disease, what else can I do to help the poor guy?

In this picture you should be able to see a few white spots on his tail, but it's blurry because he wouldn't stop moving. I've seen him rubbing against the gravel a few times, and apparently this is another sign of white spot disease. His tank is unheated and there aren't enough places to plug in a heater if I could possibly buy one...

No one was answering, so I will try to help although I'm no goldfish expert. Goldies are coldwater fish, so no, you don't need a heater unless there are other fish in the tank. The shrimp and pleco / bristlenose you mentioned, those are both tropicals and should not be housed with a cold water goldfish, nor should they be without heat.

Ok, as far as the goldfish goes, way too small of a tank, that goldie needs a much larger tank and very regular water changes, a filter that is at least twice recommended for the tank (ie 10 tank, 20 filter) for starters. Godfish do NOT live in bowls. My guess is the lack of proper clean water changes led to the distress and spots. On the note of a bigger tank... guess what, large plastic storage tubs work just fine to house goldies, not pretty, not an aquarium, but they work.

You are right about the clownfish, that is not resting and that fish is in serious trouble if he stays that way, get some advice from a salt water keeper, I don't know anything about salt water fish sorry to say.

I hope your other tropicals are doing ok, it's a sad thing that fish of the same species/variety sometimes prey on their own young. Classic example, my pairs of angels are kept in a big tank. A pair laid on the intake tube and were doing just fine with the eggs until I turned on the light and within less than 3 minutes, all the eggs were eaten by the other fish. Sad, but true.

I have a prob of my own but I'll make a new post for it.

Hello, now I have a problem I can't find an answer for because nowhere can I find any articles about fish dying for no apparent reason.

I have had 3 large angelfish die over the last 2 months or so and there is never any major symptoms such as spots, scraping, darting or the like. I keep my water perfect, do my water changes, and the only symptom they ever show is they spit the water, spit, spit, then go to the top and act like they are trying to gulp air. Next after they do that, they gasp and start swimming funny.

After about a day of swimming funny (circles, up, down, upside down) they seem to develop only 1 or 2 pimple looking things near their eyes and then they die in a very short time after that dot appears.

I've tried Maracyn and Mar2. I've tried Methylene green and a quick cure product from Walmart but not knowing what it might be, it's likely I am treating nothing or for the wrong thing.

I hope someone has an answer. I have a way to purchase some meds if anyone has any recommendations?

The goldie isn't housed with my guppies/shrimp/pleco/corys. c: He's in a seperate tank, not in a bowl. I wouldn't let my sister buy a bowl, because goldfish don't belong in bowls. I'm against keeping goldfish in bowls, don't worry. I saw a 'goldfish bowl' for sale in a shop once, way too small for a goldie, and I got so worked up over it, honestly.

Thank you for the advice! Do you know how many water changes I should do every week? Just one? Because that's what was happening before, but i'm taking care of the goldie now since my sister pretty much neglects the poor thing. She never used tapsafe and the white spot treatment was never given in a large enough dose to do anything. All she ever did was chuck food in and ignore him for the rest of the day.

The only thing i can say and be 100% positive about is that i think spitting is a normal behavior because my angel does it when im near the tank to get my attention. my dads do it too around their feeding time.

To me it sounds like a combination of eye flukes and gill flukes, but i also found an article with gass bubbles because it may also be that.

Parasites in the eye, such as eye flukes, may be found in wild-caught fish. Parasitized eyes may appear enlarged and possibly cloudy; sometimes tiny worms can be seen within the eye itself. Although this is unsightly, and may compromise the fish's vision, treatment is not necessary. There are no drugs that have been proven to be safe and effective for treating eye flukes in pet fish.

Tiny gas bubbles in the cornea (the thin, clear tissue covering the eye) may indicate gas bubble disease. Other signs of gas bubble disease include tiny bubbles in the fins or gills. A gill biopsy can be taken to confirm the diagnosis.

Gill Flukes – Is an external parasite.
Symptoms - Fish rapidly pumps its gills open and shut, hangs at the surface of the water, becomes lethargic and will sometimes “flash” off of tank decorations like they are trying to scratch an itch. Gills become pink and may show mucous.
Treatment can be done with “Coppersafe”, Prazi Pro or Parasite Clear by Jungle. Not limited to those medications but just to name a few.

Thankyou about the coppersafe stuff, I'll try some of that as well as some type of broad spectrum parasitic. It's not the eye thing, one because they are 100% domestic, not wild and 2, not the right symptoms.

The spitting isn't the normal angelfish "I want food" spit, we're talking violent head shaking spitting as if they have something in their mouth they are trying to get rid of.

Okay, sorry i didn't think they spit any other way, sorry.

I just thought they were similair. One of those sites is common angel diseases and the other is common fish diseases from they eye section.

--------------------------------------

Does anyone here have experience with saltwater, specifically nano reefs?

For some reason i want to start up a 10 gallon saltwater, but i have no experience and no idea where to start. I heard a good suggestion fish-wise is two ocelus clowns? something like that, or a damsel. Gobies are also highly reccomended by the marine owners on the forums i've browsed on.

Looking on this one site under the "nano" section those above mentioned fish are perferred in a larger tank.

I was thinking of trying a nano tank first to get a "taste" of what saltwater is like before i would invest in something bigger. i've been owning fish for about 12 years now, freshwater. I think im ready to try something new.

Like i said, i have no experience, whatsoever and need as much help as possible that isn't in a huge article that seems to ebb on and on for a while. Maybe a list of supplies and an explanation? Maybe a good video? Long articles are fine, by my previous comment , i meant not like a novel or somethingthat will take me three hours to read. Maybe something where terms are defined with pictures?
