Equid Phantasm wrote:On quick tank cycles. As I mentioned before, Fritzyme or any other product that has the starter enzymes for the tank "cycle" will work to quickly allow you to put in your angelfish. Otherwise, yes, it can take a week or 2 to cycle. That doesn't necessarily mean you can't have a fish in it, but I wouldn't put the angelfish in it unless it's good water. You also want to acclimate the angelfish to the new water by putting him in a bag or other container with his existing water and gradually adding a little bit more and more of the new water in with him until both the temperature and parameters have leveled out. Then net him out of the bag or container and put him in the new tank and dispose of the merged water.

Thanks equid, but what happenst if i cant get a net in the bag? and also if My fish is too big for a bag and barely big enough for my net?

Little update on Pip, my new crowntail girl-
She's actually doing really well. She looked absolutely pitiful in the store and I honestly wasn't too hopeful that she would make it. I just wanted to give her a home and some clean water after she sat in that cup and got passed over by so many people. I mostly bought her out of pity, but I'm really happy that I did. She's starting to color up and settle in, and she's really cute. She doesn't flare at all, but whenever she's curious about something her fins puff out. It's pretty fun to watch.
She still has burns on her gills, but they're not quite as bright red as before and she doesn't seem to be having any trouble breathing. I think they'll heal pretty quickly now that she's out of that disgusting cup.

I think I'm going to fast her for a few days, though. She eats without a problem, but her stomach is a bit swollen and she poops a lot. Her poop looks healthy, so I'm hoping that she was just overfed at the store. She's so tiny, she'll only eat 1 or 2 pellets in one sitting before losing interest.

My veilteil copper is becoming a bit overfedtoo. Mostly because hes a fast eater and hes in with fish that eat quite a bit. Hes vey violent when he eats too, but not towards other fish, towards the food. He eats as much as he can which isn't a good thing because the other fish have to scramble around to get food. im gonna fast m tank too.

Is it okay to feed fish every other day? I feel like that schedule is the best for my bettas so they dont pigout on the food i give them.
I'll change it if i have to. i was just wondering. its cool because i go between the two. Day one Leotello day two DL, day three Leotello etc;. They know its their feeding day when the food container is near their tank.

I dont know if its right but with my experience if i feed them every day they become gluttons and i need to fast them. i think its because o the small flakes that i may be putting a bit much food in there.

Um can anyone answer any questions in my prevuious post?

At Spikester:

On the angelfish acclimation. If you can find a tub that is wide and deep enough that will fit inside the tank, and put your angelfish in it (Scoop him up with the tub instead of the net), that works just as well as a bag for acclimation. (The plastic tubs used for storage... of course you'd want to be absolutely certain there was no soap residue by washing repeatedly in clear warm water and you would have to leave your tank's hood off while you do the acclimation to make it easier)

Also, on the netting, if the net is too small, don't use it or if you do, at least bend it a little so the net's square opening is a little wider so when you do net him/her back out, there's no fin or scale damage. Be sure to use stess coat if you have any in the acclimation water. I use netting the fish out of the combined water, but it's not required. You can just dump the acclimation water in your new tank. Your old tank water should not hurt the new water. Typically netting is done when it's pet store water or shipping water with shipping chemicals in it or tranquilizers.

About the feeding. Feeding every other day will not help, it will make the condition worse. It would be better to gradually decrease the number of pellets you're feeding (or flakes) and have a single day chosen to fast or not feed the fish. If you feed every other day, he'll just get worse feeling as if he has to hoard all the food he can. It is perfectly normal for bettas to attack their food by the way, in nature they feed on small fish or fish fry and bugs and such so they have to be fast and aggressive to survive. I only feed once a day due to my horrific schedule. Most people feed twice a day. I know my once a day is just fine though because quite a few of my angelfish have the bump on their foreheads where fat is stored. If I have fry in my tank or younger fish, I do feed more often but adult fish seem to do just fine with once a day. Hey, my bare bottom tanks stay cleaner that way, less waste food.

Gus, guys guys... Will mollies eat their young?

My dad bought me mollies to go into my 29 gallon when its cycled, and there was a single fry scooped up.. it looks like a liitle white colorless guppy like extremely tny, but i think its molly fry because their mollies had spawned and i got my mollies out of the tank the fry were in in a breeders trap

My dad is saying i should put the fry in my breeders trap in one of my tanks, while the fish he bought for me are going into his tank until its cycled...

What should i do?

EDIT: And yes, i did tell my dad not to buy me fish but his excuse was that the shop had in some nice decent sized adult fish that were healthy.

Almost all live bearing fish will eat their young ^^ Your best bet to keep them alive is separating the fry from the adults or getting a very heavily planted/decorated tank so that they can hide well enough to avoid being prey.

I was browsing around my library today and I stumbled across a Animal Planet book on guppies and their maintenance and breeding.

As I love guppies, I was flipping through it and read something interesting.
"If you female guppy eats her young sell her to a shop. You have no time to waste on a fish like that."

I was like waaa...? It sounded like whoever wrote it has some personal feelings regarding a fish who ate her fry.
I just put mine in a breeder tank where the fry slip through a crack in the bottom into a smaller container so mom can't eat them before I put her back with the other adult fish. I thought that was a fairly common practice for people who had fish who bore live fry.

Whatever you're feeding your fish currently but small enough for it to eat ^^ I just grind up my normal flakes into an almost powder to feed mine. Some people use special fry foods, but I haven't found it necessary myself ^^

Some fish updates:
For Christmas my fish got a big jar of freeze dried krill to put in all the tanks. I don't think they even ate them though x.x Plus, my mom just got me a bottle of new conditioner.

Bronson (Oranda Goldfish) ended up dying a few weeks ago. Atleast he isn't suffering anymore. I considered putting him to sleep, but I just couldn't do it in hopes at he would get better. I had Bronson for almost 2 years.
Ozzie (Zebra Danio) died out of nowhere. Another random out of nowhere death for the 15 gallon. It really shocked me because he hasn't looked sick or shown any signs of illness. He has been swimming around fine and eating. I've had Ozzie for almost 2 years.
Luca (Crowntail Betta) also died a few days ago. He's been sick for a while, but I'm not sure what it was. He would just lay at the bottom and wasn't eating as much as usual. Luca was the first fish I EVER had and I've had him for over two years. He wasn't very small when I got him, so he was probably like 3 years old when he died. My grandmother got me Luca the night my 16 year old cat had to be put to sleep and he fought me all about fish andis the reason I started keeping fish. I will miss him so so much </3

I decided to move Ripple and Fallow (my African Dwarf Frogs) into the 10 gallon after Bronson died since it was then empty. I didn't fill it all the way, just like 3/4 of the way. I figured this would give them easier access to the surface for air since their previous tank was a 15 gallon column tank. Plus, they are more likely to be able to eat more since they don't have a greedy Betta and two Glass Cats eating most of the food before it falls to the bottom. They're doing good in there so far.

Lastly, I've noticed Jade's one eye seems to have gotten clouded over the past month. Jade is a Goldfish who appears to be a mix between Flat Eye Telescope (from her eyes), Jikin (from her tail), and Curled-Gill (from her curled gills). Other than that, she is acting and eating normally. Not sure what it's from.

Edit: Oh and I got two new Bettas the other day! I put them in who of my empty 2.5 gallons. The first one is Axel, he's a male Double Tail Betta and he is lavender with pinkish red on his fins. The second one is Rune, she is a female Crowntail Betta and she is black with metallic green-blue scale and red fins. Both of them are sure tiny. My other Bettas- Blittz, Lilac, Lunar, and Dallas make them look so tiny x3 Axel is shy, but Rune is very social. I saw Axel laying at the top of his cup one day and I came back several days later and he was still laying at the top. I touched the cup and he moved, so I decided to save him. I could have sworn Rune was dead, but she wasn't so I sved her. Now she is happily swimming around in a big tank. I love taking in the fish who are sick or seem to have given up hope. Like when I rescued Dallas when he had fin rot and treated it and now he is fine.
"I try twice as hard and I'm half as liked, but here they come again to jack my style."
In real life I have 4 dogs, 3 cats, 2 rabbits, 26 rats, 2 gerbils, 2 cockroaches, 1 turtle, 1 axolotl, and 8 fish.
