Hi there. Tail biting by either the male or the female is just a part of the mating process but usually the male chases the female off after she stops releasing eggs, not the other way around. Typically the female will not attack the male, or work with the eggs other than to put a few back in the nest until she's done laying clutches of eggs. If your male is being submissive toward the female, then you should be using a different pair.
You do know that betta mating starts out violently before the female is ready and that she herself may get quite bitten and that during the process, they wrap around each other and "look" like they are biting each other when they are not. If you separated 2 bettas that were wrapped around each other, you disturbed the egg laying and fertilization process.
I wasn't certain how familiar you were with betta breeding, so wasn't sure if you knew they wrap around each other and fall to the bottom.
For healing, yes, salt seems to be the best, but I wasn't certain what you meant by "barbs""? Did you mean the tail branches? If so, they take longer to heal than if she just bit in between the branches but they will heal. They may never heal fully though or may heal crooked or "kinked".
I'm off to change water, a bi-weekly chore now that I have young fry.
Oh, on a side note, about the Bala sharks, although not recommended for your 29 Gallon now that I'm aware they are schooling fish, I've found they typically they do not exceed 10 inches. I had mine in a 55 with no trouble and he lived for 6 years and got to be about 10 inches (Well fed with a variety of foods including live brine shrimp) until he picked up a rock he couldn't spit out and drowned himself (Or the equivalent that happens when a fish can't move it's gills.) Before he passed, he swam around just fine, could turn around just fine, he never acted as if he were bored or unhappy, and if the 1 gallon per inch of fish standard holds any kind of truth to it, 10 inches in a 55 should have been sufficient. His only tank mates were a pair of angelfish, a few rescue guppies and some Cory catfish. That was eons ago for me it seems.
