My local pet store has PUFFERS.
I went in there to buy dog food and of course I looked at the fish.
AND THEY GOT PUFFERS. They have their own mega tank, which makes me believe they'll have them for a while.
If only I had another tank... >.>

They also have some pretty nice bettas and awesome tank sales.
I doubt I'll be allowed to buy another tank though..

What kind of puffers? 8D
My LFS always has one or two really big puffers and they're adorable. I wish I had room (and the money/patience for saltwater)to house one, they're so pudgy and cute!

Green spotted puffers. <3
They were the cutest little things. Originally, I only so two. Then when I walked over, they all came out of their little hiding spots to say high and there had to be around ten in there staring at me. xD

Well, here goes. I've been called the betta expert before, but although I've been with bettas and Angelfish for many years, I still wouldn't call myself an expert at bettas. Angelfish maybe, but not bettas.

I do know, however, that the sorority tank works ok until one of the ladies "eggs up". Even at 2 inches and full growth, there is a chance with colorful ladies, that one of them is going to egg up. There is where the problem will arise. She will start to defend a territory from the other ladies and then the nipping begins. If she doesn't find a mate and doesn't lay her eggs, you might lose her because she'll become "egg bound."

Egg laying can be forced (If she gets egg bound) with the use of Epsom salts, but I've never had to do it before because as soon as one of my ladies eggs up, she's put in near a male and introduced to him gradually through a "fry catcher" so her water and his water mix before I let them together for the pair to mate.

For certain, a sorority tank is pretty to look at, but if there is one female in it that resembles a male, then the other females could indeed start to egg up and cause problems for the other ladies in the tank. Females can egg up from sight alone, but typically won't lay the eggs unless there is a male with hormones present in the water.

Big breeders in Taiwan and Thailand do have sorority tanks, but they are humongous stock tanks with hundreds of females. That's where the stores mainly get their Bettas from and even on Aquabid and other fish selling sites, a tremendous amount of the fish are imported from Thailand and Taiwan. These breeders still do 1 on 1 breeding of each female who shows signs of egging up.

Terminology used:

Egging up: The process where the females underdeveloped eggs begin to form into eggs with yolks inside her which can happen even without the presence of a true male betta. Sight alone can cause a female to egg up.

Fry catcher: The rectangular little fry catching device typically used for guppies which has slats in the side and allows tank water to circulate through the smaller floating or hanging tank. Mine were designed for guppies but I don't use the mesh divider.

Egg bound: When a female fish of any variety has fully developed eggs inside her and isn't able to or does not lay them due to there not being any male hormones present in the water or dislike of the male present.

Resources quoted: Me, myself, and I from my own experiences. I have single large clear plastic jars for all my ladies and gents. They can see each other (I have dividers for the males) and see my community tanks, but are not in a tank together. 2 gallon square (or kind of squarish rectangular) storage containers work great. You can find them typically in the kitchen sections of big box stores such as Walmart. They are clear and food approved. I have my own drip water system in place which is monitored daily.

I hope this helps. I'm not dissing on sorority tanks, some can make them work, but I've never had one work because one female always ends up turning on the others. Hey, they all "Want" to reproduce. LOL.

My sister just drove home from college and handed me a Starbucks cup all wrapped up in paper towels. She told me that her roommate had left it at the dorm for Thanksgiving week and that they thought it was a piranha, and that she wanted me to take care of it for the week. I undid the mask of towels and there was a goldfish(or possibly a koi, I'm not too sure, but it's a singletail) that was somehow wedged in there. Apparently her roommate and a friend stole it from the campus pond 3 weeks ago with a few other fish and tossed them into a bowl, and this one was the only survivor. ene

Since it has a nice ich infection on it's tail, I put it inside a empty 10 gal I already had set up and put some treatment in there. There's no way I'm letting that poor fish go back at the end of the week. It can winter over with my other goldies once the ich is gone and will be released into my aunt's giant goldfish pond come spring.

Here's a picture of the little guy. You can see the ich spots as well.

Thank you for not letting them take it back.

Looks like a little common goldie to me. I love his coloring, such a cutie.
Goodluck with him. If you need anything we are here. :)

Thank you for this Equid. I knew that being in the same water could cause them to egg up, since you normally never put a male and female together unless you want to breed them. But I had no idea that just being in sight of a male could cause it. I've only ever kept males, so I'm good for giving advice with them and keeping them with other types of fish. I've never kept females before, not even alone just cause I've never really seen any that popped in my eyes.

Luckily my male is in the living room on one of my TV stands, we are gamers so we've got a couple TV's set up in our living room, because he's in a 2.5 and he's happy being right next to the TV we use to watch cable. I think he thinks we are watching him all the time, cause he swims around all active and shows off like he's the center of the world. Funny little guy.
And my sorority tank is in my home office, so they will never see ITK from their tank. I like having my tanks spaced out through the house so no matter what room I'm in I get to watch fish. Only my bedroom and the bathroom are void of fish now that I put the stock tank in the garage where we all hang out to smoke. >.<

I'll have pictures up in a moment, before and afters from the nights adventures.

EDIT: Dinner got in the way of me uploading these sooner. But as promised, pictures of just everything. >.<

@Equid: Will the bettas still risk getting egg bound if they've been around each other since they were young? I was thinking of getting a sorority but wouldn't want to lose any of them.

Any female has the chance of becoming egg bound, however it would be more likely if any of the other females looks like a male than if they are all common colors seen in females or if their egg spot is not prominently displayed (Some females egg spot is there but slightly colored.).

There is a cure for egg bound females and if it should ever happen to your ladies. It's the epsom salt bath treatment which works for several other things as well. I haven't ever used epsom salt baths, but every site I've seen other than here does recommend it's use for either egg bound females or for bloat or constipation.

I'm sure that if they all grow up together, there would be just as much chance of an egg bound female as if they didn't grow up together.

No one wants to lose a fish, they are, of course, family members to all of us; but it does occasionally happen. I lost a female recently to egg binding because I was not at home for over a week and my daughter didn't realize she'd egged up. (Even in the absence of a male.)

I hope you enjoy your sorority tank. Just be cautious in how it's set up and be certain there are lots of places for the less dominant females to hide should one more dominant become aggressive.

Okay, thanks equid ^^ How can you tell they're egg bound? Do they bloat?
It's going to be a substrate planted 35 gallon with maybe 11 females, so they'll have plenty of space~

I've been spending probably the last five days or so studying up on figure eight puffers after I saw my pet store had gotten them. It's pretty hard because there are SO many opinions regarding if they're freshwater or brackish or even saltwater, oe big of a tank they need, if they get along with certain tank mates, etc. There's actual a few brackish puffers, and I think some of them are even fully freshwater? But I'm not sure, I've focused more on figure eights.

I'll probably get a 15 or 20 gallon soon, plant it up and make it interesting to simulate the puffer, then slowly introduce my puffer to brackish salinity since these puffers are sold in freshwater and most people say that's the best idea. So pumped. :)
