Well, I must be hellishly lucky then, I cant say Ive ever noticed breathing difficulties is my bettas.
It might be easy to find at your pet/aquatics shops, but like I said, I have never heard of or seen it. Your probably even in a different country to me. And all the pet/aquatics shops i go to, the bettas are in tanks, with the tanks containing all the other fish, not in the middle of the medicine aisles.

jellybaloo wrote:Because betta are labyrinth breathing fish and the main ingredients is tea tree oil if ingested it becomes an irritant
Melafix creates a film on the top of the water so when they go to breath they endup swallowing it which makes it harder for them to breath so ultimately they can endup suffocating to death

Like I said if you absolutely have to use it dont use it at full strength, bettafix is 1/5 the concentration of melafix
And when doing a water change make sure to remove the film on top by blotting it with paper towel so it doesn't build up over time

I myself prefer salt and clean water for treating most ailments

I cant say Ive ever had a film on top of the water when ive used it, so that aint a problem.
And yes, I have to use it, because I have a betta in my community tank, so the other fish need it. But surely if I dont use it al 'full strengh', it wouldnt properly treat my other fish?
And if bettafix is 1/5 the concentration of melafix, then wouldnt watering melafix down work?

Just looked on ebay, and googled bettafix, looks like we dont have it in the UK.
unless I cant get my parents to buy from an international seller on ebay. which aint gonna happen.

Apparently the film on top of the water is like an oily shine or something that can be seen in the light, I haven't used it so I can't give a more accurate description

Since bettafix is 1/5 the concentration I'm guessing melafix still works fine if diluted
its mostly the film on top that's to worry about anyway, since doing a water change with a siphon doesn't remove it it builds up if you continue dossing and that's where most have found the problem with using melafix with labyrinth breathing fish

So today one of my customers told me about a small lake near here where you can catch goldfish. Apparently there are some quite sizable ones. Over a foot long. I may have to go fishing just out of curiosity.

I surely will take pics if I catch any. And I will definitely resist the urge to bring home any smaller ones I may catch. I don't have a tank for them, and I remember when I did have goldies. So much work. lol

I'm thinking about upgrading my tank size from a 2.5 for a 5 gallon. They aren't that expensive at Walmart but I want some advice on it before I get one. Like how to clean and what type of fish I can put in it (mainly it will be for my Betta) since my fish don't have enough space in the 2.5 I need something bigger. What do you guys think? Who has a 5 gallon and how difficult is it to manage? I'm going to add a filter and a bunch of decorations too :)

As long as you have a filter, it's really easy. Though you have to keep the cycle going otherwise it'll get yellow and cloudy and stay like that :c

I have two 5 gallons by Marineland, which already have adequate filtration installed in the hood. I have my beta boys in them and they love them. The tanks only cost around $30 at PetSmart. I love them cause they are really easy and the filter replacements are color coded!

Btw, Ryuu tried to chase the ottos, and the bigger oto turned around ad smacked Ryuu in the face with his tail...Ryuu leaves them alone now. Plus he just got beat by a fish not even half his size. He's embarrassed. Lol

I was reading up on how you cycle a tank and it looks complicated! You have to add the water and then some chemicals then let it sit then add your fish in the water it came in for a few hours then pour the fish out all with the heater, filter and thermometer inside and ready to go! I heard it takes about 72 hours to fully cycle your tank once you add the water, you know just to let the chemicals and bacteria that are healthy and safe for your fish to either work or grow. So another question of mine since I need all the help I can get with a 5 gallon is that, is all this necessary or are there easier ways of cycling a tank? Normally I just clean my 2.5 with new water and my bettas have lived in that for years.

Actually that is not how you cycle a tank.
To start a cycle out from scratch it can take anywhere from 2-4 months. The only time a cycle will take 72 hours is when you have media that has already been cycled from another tank.

If you dont have a filter already, I suggest getting one when you upgrade. There is a link on the front of this topic with more info on how you really cycle a tank. It is called the nitrogen cycle.
