Some zoos are good, others are bad. Our local zoo has big, open spaces where animals can enjoy themselves. I am against bad zoos, but have nothing against the ones that give the animals plenty of space and proper care.

I agree with most of you who said they aren't bad.
I don't everything about zoos, but outta everything I hear....
Zoos try their hardest to keep the animals healthy, right? If they aren't keeping them well, it probably only has to do with money. They try their hardest..... It's not like they can set them all free. If sombody is all concerned then they should donate or somthing.... Not blame the zoo. (I mean I'm sure there are some out there that are unreasonably cruel, but most aren't.)

I personally like animals, they are just like us. Just not as advanced lol. *Stares at guinea pig nomming on carrots*
I can't say an animal going exctinct is just the way of life, because it might be humanity's fault.
I'm going to be honest though, what ever happens to our earth happens. I can't do much anyways, I'm just a little kid. All I can do is beg my mom to adopt somthing and take care of my two derpy guinea pigs. lol.

Sorry I got a bit off-topic. :- (

I support zoos that provide proper medical care, food, social needs and enviromental needs to animals that can not or will not ever be re-introduced to the wild because of an injury or because they were born in captivity. I do agree, however, that many zoos need to re-evaluate their practices of medical treatment and security for the benifit of the animal's well-being. In a wonderful, caring, perfect zoo near me one of a pair of rare monkeys was killed ruthlessly for no apperant reason by an intruder who hit, punched and whacked the animal repeatedly until it died later of blunt trauma. Now they have no way of tracing this person because the zoo has no video security system. Also, many more zoos need to refurbish their enclosures, especially with large primates such as Chimpanzees, to include less concrete and bars and more trees, shrubs and natural surroundings.

Everyone who says zoos are bad and should be banned, your wrong and everyone who says zoos a re perfect, your also wrong.

Many people belive zoos are bad because...

1) They have a lot less space. Tigers and lions have 18,000 times less space than they do in the wild and polar bears have a mazzive 1,000,000 times less space.
2) Animals that grow up in zoos never learn to hunt for themselves and are very reliable on humans to keep them alive. This means they never learn important instincs etc
3) Animals become stressed and bored.

On the other hand some people believe zoos are good because...

1) Animals are treat medically and are fed well in zoos. They won't starve or die from illness.
2) Animals are safe from predators.
3) They live a happier, safer life in zoos.
4) They help endangered animals repopulate.

To conclude, I belive some zoos should be banned. Small zoos should be expanded or the animals should be transfered to bigger, nicer zoos. (The oppinions above are not mine, these are just a few reasons why) I am kinda leaning towards zoos are bad but I'm not sure :) Bye.

You can't say all zoos are good and you can't say all zoos are bad as there is an equal amount of oppinions and reasons. I think some small and bad zoos should be banned or expanded.

You think small zoos should be banned?? >.>

We have this TINY zoo by us, its probably like 20 or so acres . Thats small for a zoo. They have a moose, snowy owl, deer, goats, etc. They have small cages. But ya know? The animals there are HAPPY. You can tell they are CONTENT, so small zoos are NO WAY bad. They have a raven there that broke a wing and it grew incorrectly and he can't fly. They have a snowy owl there, she was orphaned (I believe). Porcupines, snowy leopards, arctic foxes. Have them all. They have a LOT of animals on a small amount of land, but you can TELL the animals are happy and content. So NO, small zoos are not bad!

Small zoos are NOT bad. Its like saying small time farmers are bad, 'You don't feed at least 1,000 people you need to be BANNED from owning farm animals!', Its very rude, really. And no, zoos aren't PERFECT. But an animal who has never seen that much space - Or would die there - Doesn't care. And you know WHY they have that much space? Food. To find food, they need a LARGE amount of space. But if you give them adequate amount of space, keep them entertained, and feed them, they don't NEED that extra space. Its like saying that I need a 5,000 acre house. No, I don't. I need a house thats roomy enough to hold my stuff, my food and water, my bathroom, bedroom, and have room to move around. Otherwise, I'm fine. And when I go outside, I don't NEED 5,000 acres to play / run / ski / skate / whatever on. So long as I CAN do something fun, doesn't mean I NEED it. Take a pool, for example. I'd rather have a pool that had room for me to swim from one end to another, deep enough I can dive, and some water toys. No, I don't WANT (or need) a pool that has room for me to spend a week to get from one end to another, or need a 50,000 feet deep end to dive in.

Isolated examples of poor treatment of animals- whether in zoos or movies or anything animal related, are never good things to go by when you're looking at a practice as a whole. Terrible, poorly run zoos do exist and many animals are treated badly. There's no getting around that, but keep in mind that the story of the two giraffes does not apply to every zoo in the world.
Zoos are by no means perfect, but look at them as a whole and don't assume that because something terrible happens in one, all zoos everywhere are terrible and must be closed.

I can't speak for the conditions of the animals [the zoos in my area are all very well known for the care the animals recieve, they're really nice and even the small one has won a lot of awards] but I think a lot of people glazed over something really important about them.
Zoos don't just exist so people can pay to see the animals and be entertained. They help people to learn about different species of animals- why they need to be saved, what you can do to help, and where they live. Zoo animals help to edjucate people about their species.
It's easy for people to just ignore the fact that animals need to be saved if they only see pictures and little videos. A little kid that sees a massive, beautiful tiger at a zoo is probably going to be a lot more interested in them than if they sat at home watching a nature documentary. People don't want to get so close to animals in a zoo and then watch them disapear. It helps people get more interested in conservation, which is a lot more valuable than you might think.
A lot of zoos raise money for different wildlife charities, as well. Zoo animals are representatives of their species, and in return they are well cared for throughout their entire lives.

Zoos do their best to make the most natural, interesting enclosures they possibly can. Even the largest zoos can't give large animals the massive territories they'd have in the wild, but a lot of work goes into making these enclosures the most comfortable they possibly can e for the animal. Captive animals live VERY different lives from their wild counterparts, but they're probably every bit as happy. And probably much more relaxed.
The wild is certainly more "natural," but it's not exactly a glamorous lifestyle. I bet animals like tigers and zebras enjoy getting spoiled like that. xD

I don't think zoos are perfect, but I do like the fact that they do a lot to help the different species they display. Part of the reason I love animals so much is because I used to go to zoos all the time as a little kid. I'd get obsessed with the lions and the zebras, and then go home and watch videos of them.

there's all sorts of animals with natural enclousers which is quite huge and i even saw squirells there just running across the road lol.
They have pandas there which succesfully mated and had a baby (Fu-hu i think?) and panda's wouldn't really mate and so if they wouldn't be content.

I love the zoo in vienna!
It's the, um... Schönbrunn, right? ^^ I went there when I was 8 xD

Animals that don't have enough space ARN'T happy. and how is it say you need a 5000 acre house, you can go outside... unlike the animals. Theres no need to start shouting. It's only my oppinion, or did you not read write to te bottom? And also I never said ALL small zoos should be banned di I? I said SOME small zoos and bad zoos. :/
