Any wildlife rescuers out there?(IMG heavy)

Postby Greyskies » Sat Aug 11, 2012 11:11 am

My mother rescues fur-bearing creatures native to the state of Illinois. (some normal animals, too! :D)

She has her license to do so, so don't be worried, haha!

Anyway- thought I'd share some of the pictures of her rescues! :D

Theres just some of hers! :D She's also going to start rescuing bully-dogs (again) once she gets enough kennels built. But for now, she just takes in a couple at a time. :3

Do you have any?

((Remember, wildlife is wildlife for a reason. If you come across a 'orphaned' animal leave it! Most of the time a mother will come back for it. If she doesn't return, or if the animal is injured call your nearest licensed rescue organization (or person!) to take them in. ))

The law enforcement where I am is pretty lax about handling/helping wildlife and the local wildlife center knows my family well by now, so it's enabled us to take animals to them when we find them sick, abandoned, injured, or orphaned. My parents live in a part of town that's sort of split between country and city, so sadly a lot of the wildlife wanders in and gets hurt. We've taken them injured groundhogs and orphaned baby rabbits mostly, with a few creatures that had to be escaped pets like the one hedgehog and the pair of 'tiels. Recently my parents' dog caught a starling and my mom rushed it over because it was a fledgling and it looked like she broke it's wing.

Where they are a lot of groundhogs get into fights with dogs or hit by cars and wind up limping into someone's yard, and on that block theirs is the one with the most shelter so theirs is where the animals go. We have a rabbit overpopulation problem in the city as well and a lot of dogs and cats will kill or injure the mama and babies so we've had to drag a few littlings out of their burrows because we saw the neighbor's dog do the same to the mama. We never keep them though, just take them in to be rehabbed until they can be released again.

Aw! I love your snakey snake Jazi!

The rules are so strict in IL, you're not allowed to rescue a bird without a license or you face a 650 thousand dollar fine, and fifteen days in jail! :I

CSwolf, it is a rewarding job, I get to help my mom now and then. The only problem really is money (or lack there of) you have to pay for all the animals veterinarian bills and it can add up. :(

No, but I intern for an SPCA and we assist with wildlife rescue. We don't rehab wildlife though; we send the animal to a wildlife rehab facility.

I actually have a question for the wildlife rehab people. This'll probably sound dumb, but whatever.

I've always had the goal of owning some sort of seabird. Provided I had the setup to actually care for it, how hard would it be to get one through a rehab? (One that was non releasable for whatever reason)

Well... That's a tricky situation.
You cannot actually take a animal from a rescue. Be it a permanent resident or not. Because it is exposed to all the other animals, all the other species and whatever illness it has, it obviously means that it needs medical help. So, unfortunately you're out of luck there.

However! Depending on the bird you are wanting to get you CAN take these steps:

1. Make sure the bird is legal to import into your country if it is not native.
2. Make sure it is legal to own within your state, county and town.
3. If it is, go about asking to get your wildlife license. (call up your town hall and what not) even if you do not rescue, you do need to have one.
4. Find someone who is selling. You can find almost anything on exotic animal classifieds but WATCH for scams. NEVER send money via money order over the internet and ALWAYS make sure the animal are vet certified before purchasing.
