Dolphinlover~ wrote:@Eruru: Oh no, you're not being repetitive at all. I'm glad you asked, and would be happy to help you (: I guess you could say leasing varies a little bit by location, but generally it is the same principle. I half lease Mulligan, so in my area that means he is "mine" for three days a week. Meaning that I get to ride him three days a week. I had to cordinate those days around when his owner rides him, which is Wednesdays. Usually the owner of the horse still gets priority over the horse, but the leasee is basically second in charge you could say. With Mulligan, no one but his owner and I ride him so therefore we don't have to work out when he is used in lessons or anything. On rare occasions my trainer may put him in a lesson, but that's hardly ever. The basic lease fee from my trainer is $500 a month not including vet bills, getting new shoes, floating teeth, half of the board, mics. expenses. As the leasee my parents are responsible for paying for any shots Mulligan needs and farrier and those kinds of things. The cost ends up being probably $700+ a month.
For me, I was not expected to find a place to board Mulligan, as his owner boards with my trainer. Plus, my trainer suggested that Mulligan would be a good match for me. If you don't ride with a trainer or don't plan on leasing from her, then you can look into leasing from other people's horses. In that case you can look for an "on-site" or "off-site" lease, which means you would have to find a place to board the horse. When I ride Mulligan the three days I am responsible for his care. Meaning I am responsible for grooming him, hosing him off, cooling him down, turning him out, basically any sort of care that he needs. A lease is like a step down from horse ownership, so you are responsible for a lot of the horses care and well being and therefore must know how to properly take care of a horse, and know his/her personal needs (whether that be wearing boots for riding, wrapping legs at night, bell boots & sheet for turnout, etc). Then after I ride I am responsible for cleaning Mulligan's tack, meaning bridle and girth. I have to clean it and put it in his owner's locker after every ride. I decided to buy my own grooming kit strictly for using only on Mulligan and I decided to get my own saddle pad and have my own saddle, but none of that was required for my lease. If I didn't own any of that all of it would be provided for me. Usually lease's are anywhere from 6 months to a year on a regular basis. My parents told my trainer I was only to lease Mulligan for the summer (June-August) but decided since I was being so reponsible and since I was so happy around Mulligan and at the barn, that they would continue my lease. Now we pay on a monthly basis. As I said above, he is not strictly "mine" as his owner rides him too. Altough I do have priority of him for shows. Only his owner and I ride him though, unless he may be used for a lesson but again, that hardly ever happens.
You're very welcome <3 I am glad I could help ;D

First let me start with what you are doing well, you are doing a great job of keeping your eyes up and looking forward and ahead, so good job! You also did a pretty good job with staying with him over the jump itself and not getting in his way, especially with all the scope he has xD Your leg is also pretty steady.
Now, you could work on bringing your hands closer to your body and closer together. You want to keep a nice bend in your elbows at all times. Also, you are hands are down really low and instead you want to keep your hands above his withers. Basically bring you hands closer together, elbows in, and lift your hands higher up. Next, you are kind of pulling yourself out of the saddle, and I think the cause of that may be not having enough forward pace and impulsion from your horse. You are also jumping ahead of him. Not just getting too much out of the saddle, but you are getting into two point a few steps before the jump. This usually happens when people are just learning how to jump, so it's pretty common. No need to beat yourself up about that yet. To fix this just think about waiting with your upper body until you feel your horse lift his front legs up. Then you can simply bend at the hips, and not jump "for" your horse. Sometimes when riders see a distance they feel the need to really throw themselves up their horses neck and basically jump for their horse. This messes up your balance more then it does theirs. Just think to yourself "Sit up and sit back" and wait for your horse to jump. Then once you have all of this down you can focus on your release. You want to move your hands up your horses neck a few seconds before you get into two point, to allow them to use their neck effectively.
Just don't be too hard on yourself, because you are doing a very good job and don't let anyone tell you differently! I think if you can fix those over time that you should be looking very very good (: Overall, good job. I look forward to seeing more videos of you guys!

canter wrote:Hey everyone, I went to the barn this morning at seven and got out Candy Fare, a crazy little Arabian mare that thinks the world is out to kill her. She is literally scared of everything that moves. Anyways, you have to walk through a sort of foresty 200 meter trail before you get to the indoor arena I wanted to ride in. So, she's all like looking everywhere and tense and all that and then BAMM there's a bird that erupts from the side super fast. Candy gets hysterical, first, she rears to the side and bucks a few times before stretching out to a flat out gallop across the foresty trail thing. I'm thrown off balance by the rear, so I quickly gather my reins and pull her back, hard. I was afraid I would hurt her but I checked her mouth afterwards and she was absolutely fine. She stops and just stares at where the bird was. Yep, so that was the crazy experience of the day, or so I thought. She exploded a few times when the fans started in the indoor, and tried to kick BB in the face. Kicking is a thing that I JUST DO NOT tolerate. I don't know why, but it drives me crazy. I smack her hard [I am not abusing her, I am correcting her, for all the people who thought correcting was abusing] and she shies away. So, I was really mad. I rode her pretty tight [as in not giving her slack] for thirty minutes. She was getting really nice with me, so I gave her some slack towards the end.
After that, I got on Viva and went for a nice little ride bareback, letting her pause to eat. She really is a sweetheart. After that I was really tired, I gave her a quick shower and gave Epsilon some love before going home. At four I have to go and work on Pepper, the crazily aggressive gelding that was gelded too late. He charged at me last time [in the roundpen] when I was trying to do some joinup and I need to know what to do when he charges. Please help.

Dolphinlover~ wrote:@Mr. Milo: That would be great if you could sell stuff and make money too (: It is just a really good feeling you get when you are able to chip and help pay for horse things. Oh wow, that is very cheap for group lessons! See I really want to babysit and have tried to put myself out there, and I have played with the kids for an hour hoping that this would encourage the parents to hire me, but no. Now I am counting on being able to sell the scarves that I knit, or sell some other homemade goodies :3 I just want to contribute to my lessons so badly.
