On an unrelated note... does anyone have ANY idea what kind of release is preferred in Equitation/Medals? Crest or auto? I prefer doing autos, but if crest releases are better for Eq., then I'll do that. xD I read through the USEF Equitation handbook, and although there is stuff on position, there is NO info on TWO POINT and RELEASES. >< Which is what I need help with... well I just want to know which will help me place better in Eq. I'm tempted to go stalk George Morris and ask, lol.

Could you explain to me what the difference in the releases is, Hano? While I did do a fair bit of jumping last year, that trainer never really taught me the techniques and stuff, it was more just point and go. And with Jesse, the main thing is just getting his hind end over the jump, sometimes through, without hitting the dirt. So we haven't really had a chance to focus on different releases or position over fences etc.

Yup! I'll give you wikipedia's definitions, for it sums it up pretty well and I'm not sure I could explain it without getting confusing (to myself and you xD)

Short crest release: the rider slides the hands up the crest as the horse takes off, not before (which "drops" the horse). The hands should not slide far up the crest, only a couple inches, as needed. It provides support for the rider's upper body, while still providing a good amount of control because the rider did not release any more than needed. Best used on verticals, when the rider needs to turn mid-air, or when going down drop fences. An intermediate release.

Automatic release: The most advanced release, where the rider maintains a soft, elastic, steady rein contact with a straight line from elbow to bit as the horse jumps. This release results in a great deal of control and communication between horse and rider, allowing the rider to signal to the horse what to do on landing. It allows the rider to better turn while in the air, to correct horses that jump crookedly, and to provide the support that some horses prefer over fences. It is also good on horses that need lots of control after landing. However, the automatic release requires perfect balance from the rider to be executed correctly. An unsteady rider will catch the horse in the mouth, and an incorrect automatic release will spoil a horse's jump and confidence. However, if a rider is able to perform it correctly, it is often best to use this release whenever possible. Very useful in show jumping and eventing, where control is very important.

I've seen a lot of crest releases in Hunters, but not so much Auto's... but I prefer Auto releases, that's how I'm 'programmed' to do it, lol. I don't think about it, I just slide into the release over the jump.
But what do they prefer in Eq? D:

What do you guys think of the thread? ;D

In hunters usually some crest releases are preferred. Auto releases are used more for jumpers, so I would say go for the crest release for the Medal :)

The thread is lovely! I'm going to enter nearly everything if I can get someone to actually take pictures of me when I ride. xD

I guess I'll go with that. What I don't understand is why crest is preferred if auto gives you more control and is kinder to the horse?

Thanks! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve the thread? Or hwo often shows should be held? If all of the divisions should be in every show?

Well crest releases are more of a huntery type of release. I mean if you look in almost every hunter picture the rider almost always uses a crest release. Auto is more of a jumper thing I think...

Thread looks good! Maybe you should just add a reminder in the rules that any photos and videos should be empty of names, and all faces should be blurred.

I don't know what release would be better, but it could be that either is fine and just more people happen to use crest release because it is easier to make it look good. But I dunno Hano, probably best to ask your trainer.

Wow. After a year and a half since my show paint horse had to be put down at MSU, I have finally found a horse that can pass a vet check. After THREE horses that couldn't pass a vet check, I finally found a healthy one. I cant believe that he's actually here, though it makes me cry knowing that the insurance money from my Rolex(the horse who passed) had to be used to buy this one. In some way, if feels like closure. I'm starting a new chapter with a new horse. :')

Wow, congratulations. I'm glad you've finally found a new horse. If you don't mind me asking (I've probably asked this before) Why did Rolex have to be put down? And I'd love to see a photo of the new one!
