Don't put the saddle on before halter class! Warm him up after or on a lunge line.

Other than that, make him shiny! I find a small amount of Cowboy Magic or other such product on the mane and tail after a bath makes it very soft and shiny. Just be sure not to put too much on as it will cause the mane to be slippery.

PS it sounds silly but practice getting your horse/pony to walk/trot in hand before. Doing it properly is crucial since they're judging the horse and how he/she is handled.

Okay, I can help you out with the English Eq classes ;D
TIPS:
~Most important: HEELS DOWN!
~Eyes up, look around your turns and where you are going
~Shoulders down and back
~Keep light/soft hands
~Have a nice bend in your elbows and keep them by your side
~For eq classes you should sit the canter (but if you prefer to half-seat go ahead)
~Don't grip with your knees
~Keep your toes pointing straight ahead, not outward
~Remember to relax, your horse feeds off of your nerves
~HAVE FUN :)

GETTING READY:
~Be sure your tack is clean the night before
~Have all of your clothes clean and ready
~Don't forgot some of the smaller things like a hairnet, crop if you need it, hairties, ect.
~Make sure your horsie is clean and presentable, you should probably give him a bath and clean him up
~Be sure you have a clean fleece saddle pad
~Make sure your boots are clean too, tall boots are most appropriate ^^

Good luck, I can't wait to hear how it goes ;D I hope this helped~

Mulligan, you make my world go round and I can't stand to see you go.
I'm going to miss you like crazy and I love you to pieces.
You are the love of my life and will always occupy a huge portion of my heart.
I want you to know how much I love you, and our 6 months together have been the best 6 months of my life.
You have been a dream come true and I have been on cloud nine since we first met.
I will never forgot all of the amazing times we've had together.
Enjoy your new home and promise me this, that you will never forget me, as I will never forget you.

tips
◊HEELS DOWN
◊try not to look nervous
◊in pleasure - smile
◊don't post to big
◊in hunter only two point for what you need to like don't do full two point if it is a tiny cross rail
◊halter class~ you will want to have your horse in top shape without a speck of dirt
◊make sure you learn and memorize all the patterns correctly
◊sit up straight
*try not to lose control of your reins

*i did this once in western equitation and i had split reins for the first time and i DROPPED THEM!

It depends on what you want to do with your horse. Here are a few things to consider though:

Training level- if you are a beginner, you need a seasoned horse.
If you are experienced, you might want something a little more green.
Discipline- if you are looking for a horse to jump, don't buy a horse that was used for western pleasure.
Versatility- if you want to show English, but also be able to trail ride, you'll want a horse that can do both comfortably
What you want to do- if you want to gallop all day, don't get a 25 year old.
Breed- some horse breeds are known to be more hot headed; look for something you are more comfortable with.
Temperament-If you are looking for a horse that you can build your confidence and have a relaxed ride on, calm is best.
If you want an exciting ride, look for a horse with a bit of a spark.
Body build- if you like tall, thin horses, get that.
If you don't like to be so high up, and you want to have a horse that you can sit easy on, maybe something short and stocky.
Health- make sure there are no existing problems, unless you want a high-maintenance horse.
Age- older horses cannot do as much, and younger horses can be a bit more flighty.
Your experience- don't get anything you can't handle!

Go for what you are comfortable with. It's important that you can connect with your new equine pal, and you can learn from and understand each other with ease. If it comes down to looks, it might be best to go with the plainer animal. Pretty and flashy over sensible and right for you is not always the best pick.

Saddly we got all tacked up for my lesson and is was all ready pouring, so we though no thunder no lighting alright! Ya, there was a huge thunder all the horses looked up from the cross ties but did nothing. I stayed near Logan the whole time, petting him everytime thunder or lightning struck. We all had to untack and head home before we even got to ride! Stupid weather!
