Nice decorations! Unrelated question. Why does your goldfishes look brainy? Like, litterally. Why do they have bumps? I know every goldfish has them, but what they for?

actually it is only found in a few breeds of goldfish. Orandas(these guys) and lionheads get them.

its called a wen. they are useless fleshy bumps on the fish's head that have no real purpose other than being there. they are typically small and don't bother the fish BUT sometimes(orandas especially) get massive wens that make them lop-sided and fragile.

Alright, thank you! I did get the little boy. I will get pictures tomorrow. I named him Armel, meaning 'warrior prince'. He is doing pretty good right now, but he is having kind of a hard time eating. Any idea on how to make it easier for him to eat? Right now I have him in a temporary holding tank. It is normally about 3 gallons filled up, but I have it probably at about 2 gallons. I have a silk plant spiraling up along the sides, and he is able to lay at pretty much any level he wishes. It's so cute! He might have a hard time swimming, but he still will come right over to see me when I go to his tank! He is probably my second friendliest betta I own!

Also, jelly, that looks really nice! Your goldfish are super cute too! May I ask how you frosted the tank?

Guys i need help. I think they sold me a male at the pet shop... I came home to MASSIVE amounts of bubbles albost like a foam in my tank. and then i noticed one of my girls... Esmerelda... wedged vertically, above water in a corner with two females resting below the water under her. I freaked out and got upset thinking she had suffocated and died. So i pushed her down into the water nicely and she darted away, still healthy and alive. Visually there is nothing wrong with these bettas other than, now, sligthly nipped tails.

I don't know which one (or ones) the males are and it scares me a litttle. i dont want babies or loads of harassment (why i have them in a 46 bowfront)

What causes this behavior?

And also the betta my sister chose is super stressed all the time except for when i bought her. since she was put in the tank, her stress lines have not faded to my knowledge.

I don't know about the siamese algae eaters, but maybe try some pond snails? From my experience they'll happily eat any kind of algae. People complain about them overpopulating their tanks, but in my 6.6g that hasn't happened. The fish (betta and guppies) eat up most of the eggs/babies before they can get very big.

can't do those, they'll demolish my live plants.

Really? My 6.6g is heavily planted and I've never had a problem with the pond snails eating the plants.

lmao oops I thought you meant apple snails. my bad
but yeh
every snail I've tried ends up eating all my plants and leaving me over here sobbing about it
I only kept one, my ivory mystery snail
'cause he2cute2go
he only messed with my rotala magenta anyways..... ate all of it... but that was it, he left the other plants pretty much okay-ish
the rest of the snails had to go though
except some malaysian trumpets at the bottom idc about those they don't even do anything
bye snails

anyways will pond snails eat hair algae? that's the only kind of algae I have in the tank
it needs to go
it's killing my OCD
it looks like fur and I cannot handle things that look like fur being in my tanks, I don't know why it is
plus it's on the front glass of the tank
cannot
nope
I can't handle it

post pictures and at least I will be able to tell you what are males and what are not.

try to catch the one you think is a male flaring. flared up females and flared up males look very different.

in the event that one IS male. you could leave the male but remove his nests. if he is chasing the females around let him, but if he starts being OVERLY aggressive with them(more than just nipping the tips of the females dorsal fins, more like biting the body and causing wounds) then I would remove him.

it may also be(as I have said before) a female ACTING like a male. females flare, females fight, and some females even blow bubble nests(sometimes they will only spawn in their own nests, and will destroy bubble nests made by the male). aggression in female bettas is something that needs to happen if you want a peaceful tank. it may seem crazy but they need to sort out a pecking order, otherwise they will fight over everything(food, places to rest, a piece of gravel).

another way to fix this aggression among females(again may seem crazy) is to GET a male(short finned, or plakat males do best, especially the dragon scales, most docile bettas you can get without buying a wild fish). I would then up the water flow at the surface(preventing bubble nests). now the male will be the dominant fish and the fighting would mellow out to simple chasing.

stress lines on female bettas are not always signs of stress. if the fish is not ready to breed, or is too young to breed, it will show those lines. it may also be that she submitted to the other bettas and is showing that she wants no trouble.

betta tanks are almost as hard to set up as aggressive cichlid tanks. simply put faith into your choice and keep aquarium salt on hand. some people are even bold enough to keep all male betta tanks. there was a guy(I forget where I saw it) who had a 45 gallon tank with 7 male bettas in it. he said that they fought for the first week or so, but after they established territory they calmed down and don't even care about each other. its all about trust and good betta picking.

I haven't dealt with hair algae, but I've read online that most pond snails will eat any kind of algae.

Or maybe you could try Turbo snails? They're known for doing a good job cleaning up hair algae.

i have a male veiltail in a different tank... he was attacked by one of my fish so he looks like a sloppy crowntail at the moment.... it was a misjusdgement on my part. he was a docile betta and the others went after him. i could put him in with the others when he recovers.

i freaked out because i didn't know females couldblow bubble nests. yeah two of the smaller ones are showing the stress lines almost constantly soit freaked me out a ton. As for water flow i have it on the highest setting i can but it only moves the center of the water allowing for bubble nests on the edges and in corners.

Yer basically they aren't for anything
Orandas are my favourite breed of fancy goldfish and they usually have them just on the top of their head
Lionheads and Ranchu also have wens but its is usually more even all over their head and some times Ryukins get little ones aswell

They don't often grow lopsided but they can grow so large that they impair the fish's vision
