Have you had dogs before? What breeds? Never have had a dog before.
Are there any breeds that have already caught your eye? If so, why? The Irish Setter has caught my eye, but mostly because I've taken plenty of different online quizzes on a dog breed that would be good for me. The majority said Irish Setter, which I found interesting. Of course, I'm not going to take a quiz seriously when it comes to finding the right dog so I'm hoping that at least a few members on here can recommend some good breeds.
How much time a day do you have to devote to training your dog? 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on how busy I am that day.
What kind of grooming needs are you prepared to handle? I'd like a dog that doesn't need to be taken to a professional groomer in order to keep their coat in shape. I'd be willing to groom a dog every other day, if that's what it takes.
What kind of energy level are you looking for? I'd love to have a high energy dog that could spend hours outside playing while losing little energy. My ideal dog would be able to be kept busy by two short walks (10-30 minutes) a long walk (45 minutes - 1 hour and a half) plus extra playtime outside in the yard every day.
What do you plan on doing with your dog? I plan to do some training with it, teach it the basics and perhaps a few extra tricks. I'd want it to be a good hiking and jogging companion, too. I would love to travel with the dog, for example I'd want to be able to take it camping and to my family's cottage. I'd also like if the dog would like swimming.
What size dog are you wanting? I'd prefer a medium to large dog, around the size of a Border Collie.
What age dog are you looking for? Any age that is young enough to be trained.
What kind of livestyle do you live? (Active, couch potato etc) We are fairly active, but do tend to have a lot of time on our hands when hockey season isn't going on. My life is more relaxed than I'd like it to be, so if we ever got a dog then I would be 100% fine with making my lifestyle more active,
