Title: Trapped (This is only the beginning, but I liked where I ended it, so... yeah.)
Story (skip a space and then write):
The gentle rustling in a nearby bush caused the doe to perk her ears in interest. Her dark brown eyes scanned the forest, the slightest hint of fear noticeable in the dim moonlight. Her hide shivered at the gentle reminder that rang through her mind; she was not alone in the woods she called home. Giving the thought a snort, the peaceful animal lowered her head and continued to graze on the tender shoots of grass and moss around her hooves, not minding what she believed was just the chilly autumn wind.
A snarl echoed through the silent night as the predator sprang, hunger shining in her eyes as she raced after the doe, which had bolted in the direction of the river. The once quiet forest now rang with the cracking of twigs and fallen leaves as the chase continued. As the distance between the pair grew, another snarl escaped the she-wolf’s muzzle, for she knew this animal would be one of the last decent meals for her pack due to the approaching winter, and without it, the Alphas’ pups did not stand a chance of surviving. Just as the she-wolf was ready to give up the chase, the doe tripped, her hoof snagging on an exposed tree root. The wolf’s heart raced with the thrill of a kill as she recognized the fear in the prey’s eyes, and she sprang before the animal could return to its feet, the sickening crunch of bone following the doe’s final cry for help.
Lifting her head, she let out a soft sigh, her baby blue eyes filled with relief. She had done her duty to her Alpha by catching such a meal by herself. Of course, the prey would only feed the pack’s highest members and their pups. The rest of the pack would have to find something alone, just as she had. With a relieved sigh, the she-wolf stumbled to her feet, the doe clamped tightly in her jaws. The long and grueling trek back to camp would take until moon down…
“Adelaide! Where have you been? The pack has been worried.”
“Sorry Father,” the white she-wolf muttered as she released the doe, nodding politely to the Alphas as she stepped away, “I was getting food for the pups… I didn’t want them to go hungry with winter on the way.”
Adelaide looked to the two bundles that sat near Nakita’s paws, sadness filling her heart as she spotted their ribs through their thick winter pelts. The Alpha female gave she-wolf a gentle smile- a rare thing- before she walked towards the prey, her pups beneath her with every step. Heolstor and Tikva, hunger raging in their tiny bellies, were the first to sink their teeth into the animal, small growls coming from each one’s muzzle as they immediately began to fight for pieces. Nikita, rolling her deep amber eyes at the pair, placed her paw between them, and pushed them to each side of her before tearing a chunk of flesh off for herself.
Letting out a gentle snicker, Adelaide sat down to clean the dirt and blood from her crystal white coat. She gave Sheridan a polite nod as he ended his talk with Nechtan to join his mate and pups, and she couldn’t help but grin as her father sat beside her, giving her muzzle a licking to clear it of the doe’s blood.
“Did I do well, Father,” the she-wolf asked in curiosity after he finished cleaning her muzzle, “in bringing back prey for Nikita and Sheridan?”
The dark brown brute gave her a gentle nuzzle before speaking, pride shining in his eyes, “You did wonderful, Adelaide. Your mother would have been proud to see what a stunning she-wolf you have grown into.”
Smiling, Adelaide pulled herself back to her paws, motioning for her father to follow. “Let’s go for a run! I’ll race ya to the river!”
With a gentle laugh as Nechtan stretched, she raced off, glancing over her shoulder to make sure he was following. When she reached the edge of camp, the she-wolf broke into a stronger sprint, her paws pounding into the ground as she caught her father’s scent not far behind her. Weaving and ducking as she picked up speed, Adelaide let out a howl of joy, smiling as Nechtan’s heart filled cry echoed after hers.
As the pair neared the river, the rapid flowing water and sweet scent of lily filled the air around them. The she-wolf was the first to reach the river’s edge, and she threw herself to the ground with a sigh of relief. The brown brute was at her side before long, and together the pair rested in the rising sunlight. Moments turned to minutes, and laying there with her father, the fae could not be happier. Her peace was soon shattered, a sharp pain ripping though her body and a painful nick coming from her rump. Looking over her shoulder with slowly blurring vision, Adelaide caught sight of a fluffy-ended object protruding from her skin. She looked back to where her father had once laid, only to spot a pair of boots approaching her. It was the last thing she saw before complete darkness took over, and she drifted into a heavy sleep…
A sharp howl awoke Adelaide, and she staggered to her paws. She took a step forward, but the sudden bite of cold metal against the skin around her neck stopped her in her tracks. Chains rattled as the white she-wolf tried to pull free, and a whimper escaped her muzzle as she slowly realized the fight was useless. Another howl rang through the air, and she glanced around, hoping to spot the wolf, but instead, she found a site of horror.
To each side of her, rows of kennels and cages held other wolves and creatures like her. Each was attached to similar chains as hers, and many were letting out cries of pain and sorrow. Sadness raced though the she-wolf as she recognized many wolves from the packs of the forest, but nothing was greater than the fear that struck as she spotted her father’s coat among the chaos.
With a yelp, she threw herself at the kennel’s door, forgetting about the chain that attached her to the back wall. The collar caught her and threw her off balance, sending Adelaide crashing to the floor with a whimper of pain. Struggling to her feet, she barked, with the slightest hope Nechtan would catch her voice in the noise. But he only remained still, not lifting his head or calling back.
Suddenly, every dog was silent, and the lowest growl could be heard from almost every wolf in the room. As the scent of man filled the room, the she-wolf raised her hackles and growled, anger filling her blue eyes. With every footstep that echoed through the silent halls, her heart pounded in her chest, fear taking over. She glanced to her father’s cage, but the older brute hadn’t stirred. A sharp clicking was soon added to the silence, and the she-wolf could only watch as the man stopped in front of Nechtan, and horror ripped through her as he aimed the rifle.
Tears welling in her eyes, Adelaide watched in silence as Nechtan lifted his head, his amber eyes catching her blue ones for the last time. The she-wolf turned away, lifting her head in a mournful howl as she heard the final bullet loaded. The tears began to drip from her cheeks as she heard the other dogs and wolves join in. A loud CRACK rang though the air over the sadness. The she-wolf dared to turn back, only watch her father slump to the ground, a single bullet through his skull. Nechtan… was dead.
