Entry: Cinnamon tapped her paws impatiently on the cold tile. Her ears swiveled towards the sound of thumping behind her. She turned to see that her housefolk was
finally going to open the door! A
mrrow of gratitude left her maw as she watched the hairless paw of her housefolk undo the metal latch and turn the doorknob. Cinnamon launched herself out the door, leaving her Twoleg yowling in the distance. She had been waiting all day for this moment!
Every leaf-fall equinox at sundown, the cats gathered to play at the Leaf-Fall Festival! There were activities for everycat. For the more adventurous types, a haunted house filled with terrors from unruly dogs to vacuum cleaners. Not real dogs – thank goodness – but large cats dressed as the drooling beasts. The vacuum cleaners however were all too real (YIPES!).
The foodies got to treat themselves to an assortment of fall goodies: pumpkin pie, apple cider, oatmeal cookies, and caramel apples as far as the eye could see while the creative crafty types padded to the pumpkin patch. Pumpkins and other gourds of all shapes, sizes, and colors were available for carving. Many think that pumpkin carving without thumbs would be impossible, but the cats sure make it work! Cinnamon entered the front gates of the festival, paws thrumming with excitement. Her personal favorite was the apple orchard.
Oh, what to do first! Apple picking or bobbing for apples? Hm, what about the corn maze? On second thought, probably not because Cinnamon had a terrible sense of direction. She flagged down two cats pulling a little red wagon and hopped in. Bobbing for apples it is!
The wagon stopped by the gate to the apple orchard. She leaped out and made a beeline for the apple bobbing. It was a fenced area within the orchard run by a fluffy brown tabby cat with shining green eyes. They wore a red and white plaid bandana around their neck like a mini picnic blanket. They smiled at Cinnamon as she approached.
“Howdy! Wanna bob for apples?”
“Do I?”
Before the tabby could say anything else, Cinnamon dunked her midnight blue head into the water, chilly from the frigid leaf-fall winds. She meowed with surprise but it sounded more like a gurgle. She struggled to get a hold of a honeycrisp apple in her jaws. It was so slippery! Cinnamon heard a small
crunch as her teeth sunk into the red fruit.
Pleased with herself, she emerged with an apple in her jaws. Cinnamon couldn’t hold it for long and dropped it onto the grass. The brown tabby cheered.
“Good job, sugar!” they exclaimed.
Cinnamon beamed with pride. “Thanks! I’ve been practicing all summer!”
The fluffy feline padded away and returned pushing a wicker basket. “Why don’t you pick a prize?”
There weren’t any prizes last year! Cinnamon picked out a mouse-shaped catnip toy from the prize basket. It squeaked when she chomped down on it.
“Thank you!” she said, her mew muffled by her new toy.
“You’re very welcome!” the tabby waved at her with their tail as she left to pick apples.
Cinnamon padded with a few other cats to the apple picking. She picked a basket and carefully climbed up the ladder to reach the sweet fruit. It wobbled for a moment under her paws but quickly stabilized. Cinnamon sighed with relief and pawed at a green apple that was loose on its branch. She purred when it fell into her basket and rolled beside her mouse.
The fruit gathering was going quite well until the ladder wobbled again. Cinnamon yowled as she fell and so did her basket. They both crashed to the ground and the other cats gathered around. Oddly enough, she laughed. “I’m okay!” she giggled.
A lightbulb went off in Cinnamon’s head. She had originally planned to use these apples for a pie, but she had another idea. She decided to hitch a wagon ride back to the cat at the apple bobbing stand.
“Hello again!” the brown tabby greeted her.
“Hi, do you accept donations?” Cinnamon asked.
“Donations?” They tilted their head.
Cinnamon lifted up her basket to show them. “I would like to donate these to your apple bobbing stand.”
“Oh, why thank you!” They smiled.
Cinnamon and the tabby, who turned out to be named Apple Fritter, filled more baskets with water and apples. They then spent the rest of the day together.
