Me and my mom were talking to some horse people after my lesson, and we decided that after this show season at the barn (last one is in October) that we're going to switch barns. All the western people are...my barn is going English, and they're slowly pushing Western away.

But while we were talking, the teacher was saying about how much other stuff you need besides saddle and bridle for a horse. I knew this, of course, but my mom doesn't listen when I tell her there's a lot of stuff. But if an adult tells her that stuff, she'll make a big deal about making sure it gets done.
So, she wants to start getting the little things and other horse stuff, so we don't have to run all over the place once we get a horse. I'm pretty sure I know most of it, but want to make sure, and of course, want to know what brands....

This is the list that I'm going to show my mom, but I just want to make sure there's nothing I should add..
Barn Halter
Show Halter (with the horse's name on it)
Bot knife/brush
Salt Lick (I can't stand cribbing, so hopefully the horse we get won't be a cribber and this will keep it from becoming a cribber)
Sore ointment ((darn saddle sores and ankle sores from clipping themselves..)
Horse shaver (that little purple razor this....
Shampoo
Mane&Tail Detanglers
Shedding Blade
Hard Bristle Brush
Face brush
Horse paint ((Okay, so this isn't mandatory, and is more for my own amusment....it's this stuff http://www.chicksaddlery.com/page/CDS/PROD/4000/PP7057 ))
Joint Health support ((barrel racing...good joints is good.
Horse de-wormer
Fly mask
Fly spray...
Blanket ((It gets cold sometimes...))

I already have a grooming kit with a medium brush, hoof pick, curry, sweat scraper, sponge, and mane and tail comb.
I also want to find that stuff that goes on their hooves to keep the hoof strong and healthy....I can't rember what it's called, but at one barn I used to ride at, I would have to put this stuff on daily the horse's hooves, on the outside and then the bottom of the foot...

Yesterday I went to the barn to ride.
They already had Cowboy tacked up in his stall and my instructor was going to use him as a guest horse so I had to ride Romeo.
{ my old lesson horse} So I went out to catch him from the field and he kept walking away from me. -.- After a while I caught him and brought him into the barn. It took me forever to attach a girth to the barn saddle I usually use because one of the straps was missing. By the time I was ready we had an hour til the guests got there so me and an older boarder went on a trail. I forgot how much of a forward mover Romeo is, he barely needs to be touched with your legs and he goes faster. Only bad thing about him is that he wants to go and doesn't stop very well, then when I do get him to stop he'll start walking again. On the bright side I cantered him three times and only held on to the horn once since he started cantering up hill and he has somewhat high withers and a sway back.

Cowboy:
-Neck reins
-Walks pretty slow
-Bucks in the canter departure
-Rough canter
-Likes to stand still
-Taller
-Fatter more muscular
-Spooks around spray, bathes
-Kinda head shy
-Tries to eat on trails

Romeo:
-Direct reins
-Doesn't want to slow down or stop
-Very forward
-Smaller
-Bit of a sloped back
-Older
-I've known him longer {he lived at my old barn but the guy said he couldn't be ridden}
-Bathes, lets me spray him with fly spray
-Doesn't mind his ears being handled
-Likes to lead on trails
-Needs leg aids to turn

{I'm scared. We have a tornado watch for my county :s}
mood .-.
music nuclear seasons -charli xcx
note i don't really come online very much anymore.

I rode a 'new' horse today too. His name's Tucker and he's a pretty old horse but he legitimately acts like he's still an adolescent barrel racer. He is a FAST horse, man. And his lope is very crooked, floppy and just... awkward... however it's actually really fun once you find a way to stay in the saddle! We just did some walk-jog-lope work in the riding ring and it was just a real great ride.
I wanna take him around barrels but my riding coach is against it because his joints get sore and he tends to trip more easily now(it just comes with being 27 years old, y'know?)
We aren't going to retire him this year or even next year because he's still a good schooling show horse for older riders! He's gotten a few reserve champs in the past few shows he's been in.
He's got good ground manners too, he likes to cuddle :3

hunter, remember to get lead ropes as well. And if you are planning to buy your horse, get feed and buckets and troughs as well. Look around and see what barns are around you, and if you pick one, ask the owner/manager what will be provided and what wont, that will give you a better idea of what you will need.
There's something to be said for a place that hasn't had all the rough rode out of it.

I already have a lead rope.
Where we're planning on boarding the horse, the buckets, feed, and hay all come included with the board fee.

Maybe she doesn't like lakes because she can't see the bottom.

Lol, Cowboy hates the water. The wash rack, he's a nightmare. He refuses to walk through puddles on trails, and is afraid to walk through the mud. What kind of cowboy is afraid of the mud?!
