Common Breeds
Information taken from experience and books

A

Arabian (Arab)

Image

Breed Description
Colour: Predominantly chestnut, grey, bay, and black. Gray, white and roaned.
Height:
Around 14.2 - 15hh
Conformation:
Small head with broad forehead, fine muzzle, concave profile,
wide red nostrils and small ears; deep, clearly defined jowl with the
throat set into it in a distinctly arched curve; graceful, curving neck;
long, sloping shoulders and well-defined withers; deep roomy body
with broad, deep chest and short, level back; high-set tail; hard,
clean limbs with well-defined tendons and dense, fine bone; hard,
well-shaped feet; fine, silky mane and tail, which is carried extremely
high in proud stallions, and often falls neatly across the buttock.

Additional INFO:
The Arab is one of the oldest of the hot-blodded breeds, and its
bloodlines are present in many modern breeds of today
throughout the EU and the US. The Arabian Horse was possibly
once a Oriental-type wild horse wich lived in Eastern Europe,
the Near and Middle East. They were further developed as Islam
assimilated the breed and it was used in the cavalry. They are so
named as they were first imported to Great Britain from Saudi Arabia.
Arabs are famous for their intelligence and responsiveness, they are
also affectionate and and respectful of other animals and human
beings, being especially good with children. The reverse side of
their character is fiery and courageous; they can be stubborn if
forced against their will.

Akhal-Teke

Image

Breed Description
Colour:
Bay and chestnut, often a remarkable golden sheen; also grey, palamino, dun and black.
Height:
Around 15.1 - 15.2hh
Conformation:
Very fine head with wide nostrils, large, expressive eyes and long,
beautifully shaped ears; long, straight and often thin neck set high on the
shoulders; sloping shoulder with high withers; long, often weak, back,
shallow rib cage and a tendancy to poor loins, lacking in muscle; narrow
hindquarters but with muscular croup and long, muscular thighs; strong,
straight forelegs with long forearm, and long hindlegs which tend to be
sickle shaped with cow hocks; small but hard feet; sparse mane and tail;
thin skin.

Additional INFO:
They are noted for their speed and for endurance on long marches.
These horses are adapted to severe climatic conditions and are
thought to be one of the oldest surviving horse breeds. The
Akhal-Teke horses are vigorous, excitable, and restless.
Thousands of years of selective breeding have left their mark
not only on their physical appearance and efficiency, but also
on their behavior. These horses are not only sensible but also

suggestions of humans. Their intelligence is not comparable
to any other breed.

Riding
I'm guessing anyone here knows how to ride, right?
Well, to the untrained botty, it could be a very difficult
thing to learn, especially those fast gaits.

To learn how to ride, you kind of need to ride,
so I can't tell you... However, I can show you pictures
of riding types and saddlery, so you can learn visually.
For those Horse Experts out there, enjoy the pictures!

Here in Europe, the most commonly ridden tack is
English-style, or a saddle constructed like an English saddle,
but altered.

Here is a picture of a horse tacked in English:

Image

However, In the United States of America, they ride mostly
Western, but some are still at English. This style of riding was
brought to America, from the Spanish Conquistadors.
It developed to meet the needs of cowboys working
on the ranch. The saddle is large and sturdy for the cowboys
comfort, as he (or she!) may well be in the saddle for hours.

Image

Not only the saddle is different to English, but the bridle and bit.
Western bridles mostly consist of one cinch. This goes from the
mouth (as attached to the bit) up to the poll, and then rests there,
with a brow band for support. Sometimes, they have a throat
latch too, and maybe a band underneath the chin-groove.
They also sometimes use the D-ring or Eggbut bit, but it
is usually a curb or High Port.

There are many types of bits.
The Snaffle, D-ring and Eggbut are the most commonly used
around England, yet for gymkhanas and showing you need extra
leaverage and hold, or just plain fancy- and you use a range
of others for these Events.

Full-Cheek (Check) Snaffle

This has two long steel prongs for sending extra cinches
up to the poll strap, or fastening it to the cheek piece
