Annra quietly slipped out of bed and cracked her door only to see a sleeping guard supposedly guarding her. This was the chance she had been waiting for. In the past few months there had been some suspicious disappearances in her father’s kingdom. All the victims targeted in the past were messengers of the king. Her father had banned her from leaving her room for a month in concern that she would get involved in the disappearances, knowing that she had a fascination for those types of occurrences. Now was her chance. She crept past the guard as quietly as she could, not to disturb his slumber. Out of hearing range of the guard she picked up her long nightgown and ran to the large castle doors. Her father’s hooded cloak was hung on the rack; she quietly removed it and slid it on. It was a little too big, but it would disguise her well enough to where no one could see her face. With her slim, light frame she had a hard time opening the front entrance, but she cracked it just enough to nimbly pass through the opening into the crisp night air. It was refreshing to feel the breeze brush against her skin after so many days locked up. Fresh snow had fallen. The town glowed in the darkness like the moon in the dark winter sky. She wrapped the cloak around her to preserve warmth. There would be no going back now, even if she did not wear suitable clothing for this type of weather. She thought for a moment pondering whom to go to who would contain information about the disappearances. Elagor, the old wise man, would be her first best shot for finding the information. Only one problem, he lived on the other side of the kingdom, near the peasants. It would be at least a three days travel to Bramble. The only other option would be one of her guards down at the guard posts near the entrance of the kingdom. It would take her about an hour through the snow. Her decision had been decided, she ran in the direction of the guard post.
She clung close to the shadows, not wanting to be seen by the town’s people. This did have its disadvantages. Most of the people living in the outskirts of town were sketchy and probably involved with the disappearances, but she paid no attention to them. Her steps were light leaving the slightest indentation in the snow. An old man with ragged clothes bumped her shoulder on the left, she dismissed the encounter and hurried on her way. There were many young men out on the streets, eager to stir up trouble. As she came upon a group she turned the corner and walked in the ally ways coming out on the main street. She felt more comfortable on the main street, more houses, and more people around. She decided that she would walk in between the outskirts and the main street, walking along the on the snow covered cobble near the pubs, just enough out of sight and out of the limelight.
Three fourths of the way there she heard some riff raff in one of the bars, which was expected, but what she did not expect was a particular person being thrown out right at her feet stumbling around in a drunken state. She was taken back and closed her hood concealing her face, but the man recognized her in a seconds glance. It was Alric, one of the guards. He was the person she was supposed to be meeting, the one who had the information she was looking for. What she doesn't know is that Alric is being followed....
