For the companions, in terms of which ones I most enjoy watching (from most to least): Donna, Jack, Amy, Rory, Martha, Rose, Mickey.

For which ones I like the most as people: RORY RORY RORY, Martha, Donna, Amy, Jack, Rose, Mickey.

Amy and Jack are pretty close on both counts (Jack drops a bit in 'liked as person' for some of the things in Torchwood). Rory, alas, isn't as interesting to watch as some of the more dynamic characters, but as a person he's pretty much unbeatable in my opinion, and one of my favourite DW characters. :3 I started out Season Five thinking that Amy was too good for him - now I think that Rory deserves way better than her. X3 She's getting better though. Rose and Mickey... yeah, never been a fan of those two. >.> I like Rose best when she isn't Rose (e.g. Cassandra, Bad Wolf), although I will admit I really like some of her scenes and lines ("Oh, look what the cat dragged in; the Oncoming Storm.").

Donna was the one saving feature which got me Back to Dr who after The whole Gas mask episodes thing.
Rose and Martha were a bit too much on the romantic side for my taste. I had to go back and do a LOT of catch up.

I wonder what Penny Carter would have been like if she had been the Series 4 companion (Can't even type that without thinking of Firefly, anyway back on topic) Instead of Donna.

In no particular order I love Donna, Wilf, Rory, Amy, Jamie, Sarah Jane, Jack and Zoe the best. I don't dislike any companion except for Victoria (jigaoniodfgniosanigdfnogdfnjiofff), but I have fairly extreme apathy for Martha. Most old series companions I haven't seen enough on to judge properly, but Ace was cool from one story, and I like Jo and Liz and Harry. Oh, and the Brigadier is wonderful.

I love watching River, Rory, Donna, Sarah Jane [new, I haven't watched old who] and Amy is all-right sometimes. Mickey and Martha could have been brilliant, but RTD didn't give them the right kind of storyline in my opinion. I hate Rose, so so so much I nearly point blank refuse to watch any episodes with her in by herself. Jack's OK, but I don't really watch episodes with him in often, so I can't have an opinion. For the most part, I chose my favourite companions by the way they act around the Doctor, but factors such as how they talk to other characters, their back-stories, personality and how they speak do come into my decision. C;

I watch the first of the new series last night, the first part. Those "over size handed, forget-me-not aliens" creeped me out so much. Any other opinioons?

Jabber, you might find it better to watch in order if you like the show. There is usually an overarching plot of sorts, especially when you get to season 5 and 6 - the order matters if you want the full impact. Although if you're up for catching up quick so you can watch season 6 I'd recommend silence in the library and forest of the dead (it's a 2 parter) to introduce you to River as that's so so so important, then watch season 5 in order. Girl in the Fireplace is also pretty good to gauge season 5 and 6 as it's written by the now head writer Steven Moffat. :)

We're making an event of the episode tonight - my flatmate's fiancé is coming over so there's going to be 4 maybe 5 watching together :D.

In terms of companions I love Amy and Rory. At first I admit I thought Rory would be a Mickey clone and we'd be in for the Rose ride all over again, but by the end of season 5 with his whole *spoiler just in case* waiting 2000 years for her he became one of my most favourite characters. I do think Amy is a little cruel to him sometimes, but I love the two. I love Amy and I love Rory

As for River Song, I'm a fairly big fan of her, but part of it is just me dying to know who she really is. In fact it's my love of Amy and Rory and the dynamic between them, River and the Doctor that leads part of me to wanting the whole 'River is Amy's daughter' theory to be true

As for hated companions it's Martha MArtha Martha Martha Martha...
I hate times a million that girl. She's so smug and full of herself (yes I know the others can be too but the way she is I just notice and care about it more). She tries too hard to get the Doctor to like her, and even worse to BE like the Doctor. Again, I know Rose was kinda his protégée in some ways, but still...Martha annoyed the living crap out of me, which was a huge shame because Season 3 produced some of my favourite non-Moffat era episodes such as The Shakespeare Code and Blink
