Pit Bull Fighting

The Lucky Ones Die Fighting

The sad reality is that Pit Bull fighting is now an epidemic in the U.S.
Pit Bull fighting is no longer just secretive fights in the basements of inner cities worst neighborhoods.

Law enforcement is now seeing the fighting spread much more out in the open. Fights are taking place in alleys, open lots and open fields in cities and suburbs across the nation.

The Breed of Choice for Criminals

Pit Bulls have become a symbol of toughness. The stronger and “tougher” the dog, the higher the status symbol he becomes to the drug dealing thug that owns him. These sociopaths have no interest in making the dog a loving member of their family. They torture the animal in an attempt to make him a killer. If they train him well, he will endure the abuse and fight to the death to please his owner. The dog is a material possession that can be traded like money and if he is a good fighter, he can earn substanial money for his owner.

To those involved in the blood sport of Pit Bull fighting, there is nothing more exciting than watching two dogs tear each other apart. This wicked sport continues to grow in popularity. Law enforcement is seeing a wider range of people involved in dog fighting and there are reports of kids as young as 10 and 11 training and fighting dogs.

The actual fight is cruel enough for the dogs involved. But, whether a dog wins or loses, he remains a loser. With some fights lasting upwards of two hours, the lucky dog is the one that does not survive the fight. The winner will continue to suffer from severe and painful wounds, long after the fight. Most of these dogs receive little to no medical care for injuries received in fights or as a result of training. They suffer and remain loyal because of an innate and strong desire to please their owners. This loyalty is one reason the bully breeds have become the breed of choice for dog fighting.

Training to Fight

Pit Bulls in general are extremely loving dogs. It may surprise you to hear that Pit Bulls are generally one of the least aggressive dogs toward people. These dogs are not naturally aggressive toward other dogs either. Over the years, some Pits Bulls that did show signs of aggression, were selectively bred in an attempt by dog fighters to make them better fighters. However, even after attempting to breed aggression into them, most Pit Bulls are not anymore aggressive towards other dogs than any of the other terrier breeds. Pit Bulls that are used for fighting are a product of bad breeding, cruelty and an exploitation of the breeds traits. The thugs that use them for fighting torture them to make them better fighters.

Training a Pit Bull to be a prize fighter is often much more cruel than the actual fight. The thought among dog fighters is that the more torture the dog endures, the more aggressive he will become. Pit Bulls are built to be strong dogs, but the training is meant to make them as strong and as aggressive as possible. Pit Bull fighting dogs are often tethered on a extremely heavy 3 or 4 foot chain with no protection from the elements. Additional heavy weights are added around their necks to help build muscle. They are tied to treadmills for hours on end. They are starved for many days and then thrown food that they are forced to fight for. They are fed ground glass and gunpowder. They are beaten with sticks. Still, not all of the dogs become fighters, despite the torture "training". Those that will not fight and those that just aren't good enough are used as bait to further train the star fighters.

Bad Rap

There are countless stories of the horrifying abuse that Pit Bull fighting dogs have endured. Because they are the breed of choice for criminals and because too many people get a Pit Bull for the wrong reason and because of a media frenzy surrounding the breed, the Pit Bulls reputation has been damaged, almost beyond repair. Cities have banned the breed. Even so-called dog lovers will clarify that statement by saying they love all dogs but not Pit Bulls. The Pit Bull may never again be loved by the masses the way he once was.

Pit Bulls used to be one of America’s favorite dogs. They were nicknamed the "nanny dog" because they are so wonderful with children. The true nature of a Pit Bull is far removed from the prevailing stereotype.
There is such an abundance of misinformation and misunderstanding by the general public that Pit Bulls continue to suffer. Many shelters will immediately euthanize a Pit Bull and they are the hardest dogs to find a home for.

Before judging Pit Bulls, take the time to truly get to know one. For those that have the privilege of knowing a Pit Bull, you may be surprised by what you find. You will generally find a fun-loving, sweet-natured, happy dog.

More Information

When sitting down to create this page, I struggled with how much information to share about the topic of Pit Bull Fighting. The photo at the top of this page is a photo of dogs playing. However, because the title says Pit Bull Fighting and because the dog is showing some teeth, the assumption is that he is aggressive and dangerous. This photo helps to illustrate how quick the public is to judge Pit Bulls. Unfortunately, much of the information the general public has heard is misguided, inaccurate or not complete. Because of this, many have come to conclusions and opinions that they may not have, if they were provided with all of the information.

The only way that Pit Bull fighting will begin to decline and the reputation of the Pit Bull restored is though education. Because the sport of dog fighting continues to increase in popularity, there is a fine line between providing information on the problem and becoming a resource for individuals to get involved in the sport. Irresponsible or shady owners that would not actively fight their Pit Bull, will still decide to try some of the "fight training" techniques with thier dog to make him "tougher".

As long as the Pit Bull remains the breed of choice for criminals, every Pit Bull remains at high risk for suffering from abuse or neglect. Even the Pit Bulls that are lucky to be in wonderful family homes remain at high risk of losing their homes when new laws pass to ban them from the community.
