I'd say putting them in hibernation is better unless the character is someone who can canonically change their physical form. Like, well Doctor Who. Or the demons/angels from Supernatural. Or something xD

Or maybe if they find someone eerily similar

On the one hand, recasting a major character would mean that the character itself would get to continue with their story arc, no matter how old their actor/actress may be. On the other hand, seeing a familiar character with a different face, voice, and maybe even mannerisms is a big shock to fans and could cause a lot of discomfort. It's tough, but... I think that putting a character into hibernation is the better solution. People can interpret, then, what could happen to the character afterwards, if they were to come out of hibernation. It leaves a lot of room for the fans to theorize. That's what I think anyway.
