the show is set in a modern-day era. i think the show started in 2013/late 2013 (since that's when the show itself aired. some shows usually have their set time/day/year because of what year it is when released). we know at least one year has passed (i'm pretty sure).

I think two years have passed (that we know of), actually, since we've had two birthday episodes for Steven (So Many Birthdays for s1 and Steven's Birthday in s2), and I'm guessing that there could be another birthday episode in s4, but nothing is solid with that right now (that I know of).

So Many Birthday's wasn't actually Steven's birthday though? It was because he saw an old timey picture of the gems and asked a birthday related question (I think it had something to do with candles fitting on a cake?) and they were like lol no we don't have birthdays and Steven was like ????!?!?!?!!! and threw them birthday parties. Not that it was his birthday.

^^ what lunarsnow said. we've only had one canon episode where it was steven's birthday, and we know he's fourteen. it may be 2015 in the show, or it might just be 2014. we don't know.
we just know that one year has passed because we had "maximum capacity" with the fireworks and the whole new yeae thing. steven very well may have been thirteen when the show started.

Steven's birthday is canonically in the late summer. We had the beginning of the summer in Mirror Gem and somewhere along the way summer passed and we got fall and winter. Steven's 13th birthday was likely sometime between Mirror Gem and Alone Together.

Thus, he was 12 at the start of the show.

okay honestly I felt really bad for onion when his friends left and can really relate to him, I used to think he was just a really creepy weirdo that is evil but i don't anymore just because of this episode, i'm glad steven kind of figured out that too. he was just lonely!! poor kid
