lets say you have a character with a unique name. (NOT a common name-). Someone takes that name for their new character, what do you do??
It actually depends on what kinda name it is.
For example, let's say I have a character named Ittam. Ittam is not an actual name and is a word I made up. Someone then uses that name. I'd think you would be in the right to ask them not to use it. However, if it is an actual name but just very uncommon you can't really stop them from using it since it IS a name.

Overall, if it's a name you found on the internet you can't really take claim to it. If you made it up then I think you could talk with them. However, I don't think there is much you can do since it's hard to copyright a name.

like others said, it kinda depends.
if someone named their character hooray (my sona's name), i'd be mostly surprised. it's a weird thing to name something, even if it is a common word. i would be vaguely uncomfortable when i saw that character around, probably, but other than that i wouldn't care. if it was a name i made up myself-- again, i'd be kinda suspicious, but there are so many characters in existence that it can't be too improbable that they also came up with the same name themselves. humans aren't very original, i wouldn't be too shocked.

if that was kinda poorly worded, sorry-- a day of nothing but studying for finals has been taking its toll;;

For me, it would kind of depend on the name. Some names are, how do I word it, pre-established? Like will all recognize that it's a name, and it can vary a lot- anything from Apollo to Zeke. Those obviously you don't have much of a right to. If you come up with a name that's rare and unused but still a pre-established name (I can't think of too many of the top of my head, let's say things like names that are in a language foreign to your own, common items that aren't generally viewed as names, or like uncommonly known deities such as if I named a character Mekhit after not widely known Egyptian goddess) then I might be a bit worried/offended, but I wouldn't say anything? I mean, who knows if they managed to come up with the same thing on their own. However if you like just recently made a character and posted it that had that name, I'd likely get annoyed just make sure that the person doesn't take personality or design ideas from my character. If they stole a name you made up (such as my previous username kiokami, which actually occurred when I spelled something wrong creating an account on a different site and didn't notice until the account was made, or other names such as Myrok or Daskron) then I would likely consider asking them to change the name, though honestly I'm sort of shy so I might let it slide.
The thing is, there are only so many names in the world an a ton of characters. Chances are, some will have the same names, even if they're rare. Though if they stole something you created yourself, yeah, be annoyed, I don't blame you.

I actually had an incident where I kept the name of a character I bought, and about a year later the person asked me to change it for personal reasons that don't need to be said here. Considering it's not really a big deal to change the name, I didn't mind at all and was glad to change it. So maybe I'm a bad person to be getting advice from because I apparently just sort of go with the flow xD

There.. isn't much you can do. It isn't like the name is copyrighted, and unless the name is one you completely made up on the spot and literally has no connection to any other names in existence, then coming across someone else at some point with a character that shares one of yours' names shouldn't be that much of a surprise. Even if it is one you made up on the spot, there really isn't much you can do.. Like I said, it isn't like the name is copyrighted to you.

For example, I have three characters; Seafra, Vesuvius and Dimhiel.
Seafra is a name deriving from Irish decent, meaning peaceful territory. It isn't at all a common name, but it is an existing name none the less.
Vesuvius is named after the volcano that wiped out pompeii. The name is definitely not common at all, but it exists.
Dimhiel is a combination of two names, and doesn't exist in any language as far as I am aware.

Coming across someone else with a character named Seafra/Vesuvius shouldn't be a surprise to me, and someone coming across my character named Seafra/Vesuvius shouldn't be surprised to find another character with that name.

Coming across someone with a character named Dimhiel, however, raises some brows. There is the possibility they saw your character with the name and liked it enough to use it for their own, unaware it was a name you made up. Theres the possibility that they also happened to make the name up, and this shouldn't be dismissed as a valid point. You can't really claim a name unless you trademark it. However, if it really bothers you that much, you can always politely PM the person, but I don't think you should really.. expect them to change their characters name just for you. Especially if they've had the character for a long time.. and I don't think you should be offended if they say no, they're not going to change their characters name (unless of course they're rude about it, but otherwise.. it's just a name).

Then and again, I'm a person that wouldn't be too bothered by it, lmao. I think if someone likes a name I've made up enough to use it themselves then maybe I've done a good? I dunno, it'd just make me feel.. surprisingly honoured? That someone liked it enough to use it for one of their own characters?

ahh i believe if it's named after something that exists (like a deity, a name of an object, a random word, a song, ect) then i wouldn't mind, because it's completely possible that they just decided to name their character that without any influence from my OCs. if it was a made up name however, and i knew the person has seen that specific OC before, then i would be a little bit uncomfortable with the fact that they took the name. in the end though i would feel good that i helped name an OC, because sometimes it's really hard to find a fitting name. ;;" so i don't think i would do anything about it. uvu

ayoooo ive actually had this happen to me a couple times lmao.
honestly, i didn't do anything but acknowledged that the person/people had the same character name as one of mine.

at one point there was somebody who had a cat (i think) character named Shai, now my sona is named Shai who is names after a very very close friend of mine and its not that common on a name. tbh i was little ticked off but theres nothing you can really do, its just a name.
lmao after that i noticed after i made bubbles and zeke, two characters named zeke popped up and so did a bubbles.

I would shrug and move on with my day because regardless of if you "made up" the name or word or whatever you have no right what so ever to be mad, even if someone saw your character and specifically copied the name. You have no legal rights to it regardless of what some people think. You literally cannot trademark a name or nickname, at all. Not to mention the fact that there's basically no chance what so ever you're actually the first person to think of that combination of characters so it's a moot point.

If I had someone message me saying I'd "stolen" their characters name I would laugh at their immaturity and continue to call my character whatever I dang well please because I really don't care for the spoutings of entitled children on the internet.

Considering the fact that I have characters with unique names ( Sienus, Spacus, Etoix, etc. ), I would ask the person what the name means/how they came up with it. Depending on their reaction ( "Oh, I saw that you had it and loved the name. Sorry!" X "Its a name; no big deal ) would also affect my own reaction. With the earlier, I would just ask them to tweak it and all and move on, but with the later, I would ask them to remove the name at once and even voluntarily give them a list of names to use. I'm sure that these names are unique, for I made them my own.

His name is going to be Mael and he's a traveling magician
He travels around in a red and gold caravan
He's very acrobatic and includes that in his act
He grew up in a small rural village with his best friend Sonje
He can be very fussy about his appearance and cleanliness but his caravan is a cluttered disaster
When anyone tries to force him to do anything he becomes very apathetic and indifferent
VERY FLAMBOYANT
accidentally flirty because he's very charming but he's also 100% oblivious

Wardrobe includes a burgundy suit jacket vest thing with tails and gold buttons, and a black silk top hat that Sonje gave him when he first left their village.
