Answering my own questions:
What is your opinion of closed species?
It depends. I'm not really a big fan. Now, yes - I have my fair share of sushi dogs and cinnadogs and even 2 waterdogs (though I was late to joining the closed species party). However, I feel like 7 out of every 10 users on here attempts to start their own species. The more ideas we try to "close off," the less original characters will be in the future because everyone will have a reason to scream YOU STOLE MY IDEA at someone who has never even seen the species they're allegedly copying. I also don't like all of the rules that come along with the closed species (aside from the characteristics). A set number of breeding, how you can and can't draw them, whether you can resell or retrade or not, etc. I mean, some species have some legitimately obscure rules.

I also find closed species characters harder to connect with. They are less your idea and more of someone else's; you're also prone to buying a character that's a part of a big species just for the name/value, only to later realize that you never actually connected with the character (or in some instances even liked the design) at all! And they're a huge money sink. Props to alfeddy/captyns, witchpaws, apple, Talon, etc. who can get their species rolling really well because of their gorgeous art styles and creative ideas; they deserve to make a butt-ton of money. However, some people try to sell their species' adopts for $25 off the bat - just because it's a 'closed' species - before they even gain enough popularity to be recognizable. You have to start off small. Remember that Kiamaras used to be 100% free to adopt. Apple waited to profit from the idea. Same with Makos, etc. I'm sure the first sushi dog didn't sell for $400 dollars, but nowadays, that's a normal selling price for a witchpaws-made one. Too many people try to jump into the closed species business because they expect to profit a ton, but because they are unwilling to start out small (or don't have a very creative idea), they can never get on their feet.

This being said, I'm by no mean a fan of the "closed species revolution," which deliberately copies an artist's ideas for the sake of "making of point." For example, any DA users remember the old waterdog ordeal? The point (which I don't necessarily agree with) was to say that the species is unoriginal and you can't copyright the idea of water on a dog. Then like 5 new water-dog species grew out of the revolution? LiquidPooches, Aquanines, etc... they all started "copyrighting" their idea and even selling MYO slots. Literally the opposite of what their "original intention" was?

By the way... making a dog with liquid/water is not copying water dogs (unless it was a deliberate decoy). Water dogs are not dogs with water for bodies. They are dogs with oceans/lakes/other bodies of water and beaches, which is a distinct idea. captyns/alfeddy did not try to close off the ability to make characters with liquid on them.

Anyways, rant over. I try to stay away from closed species except some of the really big ones as much as possible for many reasons.

I love some closed species, like pimmies, makos, and aphelios. But others i'm just not interested in, i don't really hate any, but i am just not inclined to them(if that makes sense nvn)

I'm in an answering-questions mood ;v;

What is your opinion of closed species?
Well for me it really depends on the species. I know that there are a lot (a LOT) out there, and every one is different. I spent my first few years of CS looking for a species I love enough to dive into. I've tried out for over a hundred JellyBean Dragons and have never won one, I have tried out for a few Kiamarias and a Plumerian or two, and last April I finally found and tried out for a few Makoatl. Skilur was my first ever Makoatl whom I won April 28th of last year, and now I have 19 as of today ;-;
But that's because the Makoatl community just kindof welcomed me with open arms - as it does everyone - whereas I felt like the other communities sortof just ignored me |D I don't mean any offense to the owners of the other closed species I mentioned, or owners of the ones I tried out for, because I know that they all won fair and square, and deserve those characters, and many of them I still like to see around this thread.
But Makoatl are really the only Closed Species that I consider myself an active part of. I do own two Parrapups, but I've become close with so many people and made many friends through that community, and spend almost $300 towards all my Makos, so they are very important to me.
Also, my life likes to throw me constant curve balls and fast balls and any kind of difficult-to-deal-with situation metaphor you want to put here, so when I get down in the dumps (( and I, like many people here, use my characters as an outlet for my depression and anxiety )) I work with my Makoatl. Developing each one's personality and story, and drawing them!
I freaking love drawing my Makoatl.
Especially Zora's family! <3 (( Zora, Nero, Ayasha, Finnur, Idunna, and Psykhe, along with Ayasha's new family )) Their markings are so fun and all the children are just so different its
its really amazing <3
And a few times, I have come up with unique ideas and tried to make them a closed species, and even bought Goop Monsters a while ago thinking I could build them up to JBD or Kia status, but those all failed because I was trying too hard to copy the others, instead of just doing my own thing. Now that I own a closed species, the Pliggles, I know they will probably never reach JBD or Kia or even Parrapup status, but I created them and create designs once in a while and let them out, and if people like it then that's great, if not then hey, I still enjoyed creating them and will still create designs for the occasional oddball who does like them

But anyways to wrap it all up, I really don't have an opinion on closed species in general, because each one is so different from the last that once you get into them, you can't really compare them, if that makes sense?
But I really love Makoatls ;v;

SPEAKING OF - I have a few couples who will be ready to breed soon, so if anyone here doesn't own a Makoatl yet, but has or can earn DA points, I would love to help someone get their first ever Makoatl :3 I've helped someone this way recently and it's turned out great <3 so I would love to continue this!

Well, I own 19 makos and around 10 other characters, but lately everyone loves my MYO Makoatls that are being made official very soon, but I can't show them because they aren't official yet xD
Umm in the Mako community, it seems like people really like Velvel? I don't know, I put so much into them that I don't really pay much attention to what other people like unless they have the mate to one of my makos, and then its just that one that I want them to like xD

they've destroyed the character market imo, people used to love buying and getting characters of all kinds, now the only thing people want is closed species ID and now there is such an oversaturation of designers out there and too many people are trying to make the "next big thing". I also find that most of it is just for money too, I've had a lot of problems
