I feel like watching something new, does anyone have any suggestions?

As for what I like... It's pretty rare for me to like popular anime, I'm more interested in obscure stuff, and I prefer shorter shows that I don't have to spend forever watching. One of the things that most often makes me like a show is good characters, I like stuff with a good variety of non-cliche characters. Usually I like a good, pretty original, plot, but that's not always necessary for me to like something. I like humor too, though like a good plot I can enjoy anime without it. Romance bores me, I generally like adventure-type stuff, and minimal fanservice is preferred.

Beyond the Boundary, Kagerou Project, Noragami and DanMachi are all good short animes. D.gray-man has a very interesting plot and great characters, though it is longer (100+ episodes).

usually when i get bored of anime, i'll watch some movies or OVAs, so here's a few!

wolf children is a beautifully done movie that i personally loved. i linked you to it's bio page on MAL so you can check out some reviews and a better summary of it than i could provide. it's not much your typical 'adventure' as much as it is you watching them go through the ups and downs of life. that in itself could be an adventure, though

toki wo kakeru shoujo is another beautiful movie that left my crying like an idiot. this one has romance themes, but never really indulges that romance due to the main character. it's more of a learning experience. the link is included there.

bakemono no ko is also a great movie that gets you really hooked on it. it has the type of ending that leaves you feeling pretty good after finishing it. also linked the MAL page there. this one is the most "adventure" themed one of the three, so this one would be the top recommendation for you@

if you don't want to go for movies and want an actual show, i also have a few recs.

kyousou giga is a short, 10 episode anime with beautifully enthralling and eye-catching visuals. it's colorful and unique and the carrying-out of it is quite a whirlwind; however, it somehow manages to wonderfully execute itself with the colors, themes, and characters. it's the kind of anime that has you confused most of the time, yet you can't stop watching because it's just that good. linked that for you there too. it has a 25 min ONA if you want to get a whiff of it beforehand.

FLCL or fooly cooly has some romance themes, but it isn't really entirely based off of that. it's 6 episodes, so it's short, but manages to leave a lasting impact on a person. i fell in love with it after watching. definitely left me with my knuckles white and eyes puffy.

OH MAN OH MAN OH MAN I LOVE YOU FOR SUGGESTING THESE
like, can we all unanimously agree that mamoru hosoda's films are so good? yes? double yes? he really likes that "growing up / family" aspect as of late and it's great, ok, especially w that added "but what are you, really? what should you stay true to? what counts as a family? etc" kind of thing that gets highlighted within the movie for added effect
it's .. really good. the girl who leapt through time (toki wo kakeru shoujo) happens to be especially close to my heart, um, especially since it goes and doses on the romance in this one, where comparatively the other ones just seem to be barely hinting? if feelings are not flat out stated i'll just pass it off as not very romantic, however, soooo i wouldn't be the best source.

oh, and, speaking of which! FLCL happens to be getting a second season! crossing my fingers in hopes that it'll be just as good as the last one! it was cute, and mamimi was especially cute, and, um...
i'm definitely not fond of romance like the ones in this one, what with both parties being. super. old. can i say that on cs? they were OLD and mc WASNT and it was just a really weird portion of the anime. but i liked it! it was wack.

i haven't chcked out kyousou giga yet, but i think you have good taste (read: my taste) so i'll go check it out sometime!
also, to anyone else: thoughts on kabaneri (of the iron fortress or whatever it is in japanese) so far? would you recommend it? is it overrated, is the op good, any similarities to past anime? and can someone talk about (bake)monogatari to me, omg??


ETA: i didn't mention!!! im going to a con in two weeks!! and i've never done it before, so. any tips? :> im thinking abt cosplaying as a very simple character from an anime my friends keep roping me into but i have actually no idea how long it'll take to make something?

merrodi, i know! his films have beautiful stories and premises. i also like studio ghibli a lot! both have plots and concepts that go beyond what typical anime movies and shows have. they take genres such as family and whatnot that wouldn't usually be very popular amongst younger viewers and make such AMAZING works of art oh my gosh i just get so into them

kyousou giga is really cool, imo. it's a lot different compared to other anime. if you watched madoka magica, think of the scenes where the girls are battling the witches. those weird and intricate graphics are similar to what you see in KG, except it's that way throughout the whole thing. it's really cool,man. the visuals had me HYPED

i actually like koutetsujou (??) no kabaneri a lot! it's made by the same creators of attack on titan, and it follows practically the same exact plot except it's different people and different enemies. if you juxtapose them, it's actually incredible how similar they are.
titan = kabane
titan shifter = kabaneri
walls = stations
eren = ikoma
etc etc etc. they're practically the same, but knk has heavy steampunk themes. i also find it to be a bit more graphic ?? but i don't remember exactly how graphic snk was since i watched it a while back.
i personally do recommend it. every episode has you on the edge of your seat because the characters never seem to catch a damn break. there's always something. it can't watch more than 3 episodes in a row because i just get mentally exhausted at how intense it is. after watching 45 min of it i need to take a break and watch some slice of life or idk what to calm my nerves lol
NONETHELESS it keeps you entertained and it's well executed! if you like the walking dead, this is basically an anime of it where everyone rides trains all day and they all fight zombies. there's also a lot of anti-adult themes because every adult tends to be stupid and fearful and powerless so it's one of those angsty teen kinda perspectives

like hamsa said, cons are very exciting- especially when it's your first
time. at my first expo, i fangirled over a miku plush. of course, i wouldn't normally
do that now, but it goes to show just how exhilarated i was. forget my interaction with the
cosplayers, but hey, i'm sure that's just me? my point is, don't be me.

when approaching a cosplayer, all you need to do is keep your happy screams inside.
oh, and whenever you have a chance to meet any seiyuus/actors, take it! you might
even get to ask them a question or two if you're lucky.
overall, i'm pretty sure you'll be fine, just make sure you're having a good time!

i always feel like ghilbi and hosoda have this special thing in their movies that just makes you feel so satisfied after watching it!! it's a very 'feel good' feeling and makes u want to, idk, become a better person and go off to the countryside and grow some crops or something, wolf children included. and yesssss i agree so much bcause most family-friendly movies tend to be very basic, but these manage to keep it pg while also bordering into some heavier stuff?
it's ridiculously refreshing n cute!! i will admit im not as hot on ghilbi, but i rly rly love a few of their past works

having never finished pmmm or aot (I KNOW, IK NO W) i can't comment much on that whoops > w >;; but i've heard claims that kabaneri is better than aot? regardless, i'll definitely give it a try sometime! and.. finish some other anime up this summer.... which has been pilling up and up ever since 2013...

oh man yes on that con edit. i asked around and others suggested to bring lots of water and more money than i think i'll need + a phone charger/first aid kit? if those will be helpful? (i'll have to bring a giant bag regardless because i really want merch!! like, loads of it. if there's figurines i'll buy out the whole stand)
i'm making a really simple list of anime characters who have fairly standard school uniform esque designs!! which will still require some sewing and constructing but thankfully nothing like a kingdom hearts character (excluding namine. and tera. and whoever else this was a bad example), so i'm not that worried about it! and i'd really be interested in talking w u more about this? :> im a shy ass so mayb it'll take some courage, but let's TALK!!!

i don't know if i'll ever get the chance to approach any cosplayer without someone with me first, as i am terribly terribly shy in public situations but thanks for giving me lots of input!! maybe i should just get a friend to go with me in this as well dbfbreerg ;;
