Why? I'd like to know your opinion behind that.

      i think people would agree when i say that the alfheim arc {episodes 15 - 25} was really really stupid, with a forced love triangle {an incestuous love triangle, if i may add} and leafa/suguha who is probably one of the most whiney and annoying female characters i've seen in an anime.
      if you're gonna recommend sword art online to somebody, then only recommend the first 14 episodes. everything after that is a waste of time.
      same goes for season two, but i guess the mother's rosario arc is okay at best.

      it's a classic example to show us how easily A-1 Pictures can screw up a series. they did the same with the last three episodes of erased.
      and, as some of you might know, erased was directed by tomohiko itō, the same guy who directed sword art online

sorry i'd just like to step in here.

SAO is quite possibly one of the worst shows anime has to offer. I'd rather state that as a fact then as my opinion but hey lets go with 'in my opinion'. From the plot progression, to the plot holes, to the dodgy romance, to the meaningless exposition and, worst of all, to the disgusting character development - SAO draws in its viewers through the main character. Kirito. He's also the worst character of the series who has to rely on a smallest speck of a romance (that doesn't make any sense) to slice a little bit of development into him. SAO makes Kirito literally just the wish fufillment of a 12 year old boy. He's overpowered, dark and "cool", gets all the girls and does it all while looking fantastic in a trench coat. Yet he has no personality. From the first episode to about the time that Asuna starts gettin' sexual, we know very little about the main character. Other then the fact that he's a lonely, mopy, annoying 13 year old that's sad because he was stupid on one occasion. And the fact that he can beat bosses without doing much. At the duel-wielding boss was where any hope of Kirito ever losing and getting hurt was completely destroyed. You could argue that because he was brought to a sliver of his health there was no BREAK OF IMMERSION but the second he pulls out his dragon crap sword the boss is immediately shredded by just Kirito and nobody else. He constantly makes stupid decisions that have no meaning behind them, his motives are stupid and the only time he ever gets development - for the second time - is when Asuna has small moments with him. Now onto Asuna. She is introduced as a badass girl who, despite not playing many video games, has a natural talent for it. She's also a loner. So there was nothing entirely wrong with her from her first introduction. She had a beautiful character design and was generally a potentially amazing character. Then 4 episodes of filler goes by and she's suddenly become classic true and true tsundere "i love kirito chan!" character. A copy and paste character that literally does nothing but sits by and cries. She spends the entire second arc of the first season literally stuck in a cage. STUCK IN A CAGE. Other characters each have their own little episode to themselves where they fall in love with Kirito because Kirito is 13 year old wish fufillment.

Now onto the plot? So there are timeskips here and there. Overall it's pretty dissapointing. The first arc is mostly filler. Also at the end of it -spoilers- they ask the creator of the game why they trapped and killed hundreds of people and he was like "pff i donnow" and walked off. also Kirito gets killed but then doesn't because of the POWER OF LOVE. If anything the only decent arc of both seasons was the very last arc. Mothers Rosario or something? Because the main heroine in that arc had a personality. We felt sympathy for her, she had a good backstory and a good personality. She improved Asuna and made SAO good for a few episodes. Plus Kirito appears like once in that arc.

Anyway I think that a lot of fans of SAO are fans because, they are either 13 years old, or they don't watch anime too critiquely. Is that a word? Anyway I'd say some of the fights are pretty hype. And if you don't mind a no personality hero then it is bearable. The music is great too (though the opening is bad - not the song - the opening). And it's very pretty but that's just A-1
What made it so so so bad to me was how much it is hyped up all the time.

There we go. Sorry for intruding. And for probably being rude somewhere.
Adios and adipost.

wait you gave your opinion too! i'd say don't watch sao at all.
A-1 Pictures have a habit of making shows that start off great and then messing them up horribly. Though Erased was more of an episode problem. The manga was so much better because it had so much more content. It really needed 24 episodes to have a decent ending...

Can I say this is all just everyone's opinion? If you disliked SAO because of its characters and plot, that's fine. Some people really like it though, including me, which is why I suggested it. I'm only saying this due to the fact that I don't want someone to refrain from trying it out because they get the idea it's a horrible anime when they might actually like it if they watch it.

//oh, don't mind me, i've never seen an anime i didn't enjoy
