I'd like to share the prolouge to my current project. What do you guys think?
The night was dim, the moon hidden behind shifting clouds.
Bright eyes glowed in the dark. The coyote stopped and nosed the air. He was hungry and had only one thought on his mind: food. Scenting nothing, he growled impatiently and padded on, soon vanishing in the hazy distance. Elsewhere in the desert, a great horned owl floated lazily in the cloudy sky, watchful eyes scanning the ground carefully. The owl wasn’t all that hungry, but still, a snack never hurt. Perhaps a delicious morsel of mouse... The owl turned away and glided to where he knew he could find a meal, passing over a cholla cactus where a cactus wren nest lay tucked into the plant’s spiny arms. The great horned ignored it. He knew it was only a decoy nest. There was no food there.
As the great bird flew out of sight, a small head poked itself out of a hole in the ground and was quickly followed by an equally small body. Slim and slender, with large ears and a pointed face, the kit fox had come out to hunt.
Another head appeared from below ground. The fox outside the burrow whined softly.
“Kiara, are you sure about this?”
“Relax, Kerrick. It’s a good night for hunting.”
“But what about-“
“The pups won’t come for a while now. Are you going to come with me or not?”
Kerrick smiled at his mate. “Of course I am. I’m in the mood for lizard.”
The she-fox wrinkled her nose. “You and your lizards. I want red meat from something with fur, not scales.” “Oh yes? We’ll see who finds prey first!” Kerrick sprang out of the burrow and raced off into the desert, his black-tipped tail waving gaily. Kiara yelped in surprise, and then took off after the dog fox, laughing in delight.

The she-fox panted heavily, lying on the dusty ground of the burrow. Nearby, another kit fox waited, anxiety coloring his every movement and expression.
“Kerrick,” she choked out. He sprang to his feet.
“What? What is it?”
“Go…hunting…or something. Find…food.”
“Are you sure? Should I just leave you? What-“
“Just…go…now!” Kiara barked. Kerrick backed away.
“Alright. I’ll go find the fattest, juiciest rabbit there ever was and bring it back to you.” He nuzzled her gently, then ran through the wind tunnel until he reached the exit. The cool night air tugged at his whiskers. He left the den reluctantly, but he knew Kiara. She was strong. She’d make it. Even in the midst of his worry, Kerrick couldn’t deny the excitement he felt about pups. He loved them, loved the little squeaking noises they made, loved the way they romped and tussled with their litter mates. His pups. His and Kiara’s.
Kerrick set off into the dark to find the rabbit he had pledged.
