I read a theory that since Stanley and Stanford are named almost the same thing, it could be Mabry. It could be like a name tradition for Pines family twins. IDK though. Plus, I doubt Dipper would use a nickname if his name was relatively normal.

It was just a random idea *shrugs*
But while were on the subject, I think it's interesting to note that they called him Dipper even when he was three. We know this because Mabel showed us a picture she drew of him when they were three, and she wrote 'dipr'.
So, his parents must have been the ones calling him that. The question is, if that's a nickname, which I'm pretty sure it is, then why?

Okay, I just had a completely random idea for Dipper's real name
Matthew
#1- He looks like a Matthew to me
#2- It makes perfect sense for the twins to be called Mabel and Matthew.
We can easily assume they'd have similar names.
(I know this is super random, I just know a lot of people named Matthew and it popped into my head.)

I was thinking Alex because it's based off of Alex Hirsch's summer as a kid with his twin sister.
