I agree, the contests are biased towards those who put forth the most time and money - and I think this is the RIGHT way to judge a contest.
I know when making my form for my makoatl Sai, I easily put over 200 hours, maybe even over 300 hours, into the form. I mean, I was planning and coding and drawing and writing at all hours of the day. It was during finals time for me as well, and there were nights that I put aside studying for finals in order to write more. Metaphorically there was genuine blood, sweat, and tears poured into that form. I remember that I was actually doing art of him on Christmas day while I had family over
I may have not spent the most money on him, only putting maybe 10 USD into the form, but I know without a doubt there was more effort and time in my form, because there were times I just didn't want to be working on the form anymore but I knew I had to perservere.
I would have been so angry and devastated to lose him to someone who had only put maybe 5 hours worth of effort into a form.
The point where you know you're putting effort and time into an application for a character is when you're at the point where you just want to stop and take a rest for the night but you know in your heart that it isn't an option if you want to win.
And honestly money and time are valuable - the fact that anyone puts forth a lot of either into a form shows they want the character that badly. Generally, those who spend more of either want the character more than those who do not.
And I have very little pity for people who claim they didn't have the time, because when I tried out for Sai I was a fulltime student in university working a fulltime job. There were nights I stayed up til 3 am working on the form, even though I had to be awake at 7 the next morning. I feel like everyone on this site has at least some time of the day where they're chatting with friends or procrastinating on the internet or even just chilling out with a pet or a book. It may be unhealthy advice, but if you really want to win the character, you need to tell your friends you can hang out later or turn off the internet at your house, and spend that extra time just working on a form.
You don't always need to do that, though. I mean a less popular species won't require quite so much dedication. But with my makoatl Sai, if I had even taken a break for a single day, I might have lost him to the competition.
It's approaching my 1 year anniversary with Sai! I can hardly believe the journey I've had with him. I have a commission on the way but I'd love to get some more. Please PM me if you have commissions opened on DA (Ill pay with points?)
