OK, let's start from the beginning. Fredbear's family dinner was the first in the line with one animatronic, Fredbear (aka, Golden Freddie). When the Purple man claimed his first victim, Fredbear's was shut down. Later in was renamed and reopened as Freddie Fazbear's with an all new cast of characters and a redesigned Freddie. The spirit of the first child haunted the restaurant causing the animatronics to misbehave thus giving some people a 'negative impression'. To deal with this the company made two suits that humans can wear to keep the animatronics in line. These suits were a purple Freddie and who we now know as Springtrap. Even with these suits the business failed. Years later a new restaurant was opened, this is where the second game took place. The animatronics at this point were not possessed but being guided or controlled by the puppet (a puppeteer. He's also the only one with a completely unique behavior plus the phone guy says he's always thinking, unusual for a robot) who was harboring the first child's spirit and causing the characters to misbehave just like he did in the last restaurant. Which later on in that week the rest of the murders took place. Also note in Foxy's mini game you run to five happy children, however one is sad, that was the first victim, remember him crying at the door in 'give them cake?'. The killer used one of the convertible suits to trick the kids, a yellow one. Now it couldn't have been golden Freddie, for one it was not designed to fit a person inside, and two, what kid in their right mind would follow that? He used yellow Bonnie to trick them. Both yellow Bonnie and purple Freddie make an appearance in the second game, shadow Bonnie and shadow Freddie. After the third restaurant closes down the fourth and final restaurant openned where the first game takes place. These animatronics are possessed by the children (note how each animatronic has its own unique behavior and personality just like people), though the original victim is free roaming but can be summoned as golden Freddie. The phone guy cannot be the killer, he dies before the Purple man. However, the Purple man became the day shift guard which is the reason the animatronics go screwy in the second game. This could also be why there are two versions of the Purple man, the animatronics probably see staff differently than normal everyday people so when the killer became staff they saw him differently but still knew who he was. Now, years later the Fazbear franchise has been abandoned and left to rot (in rare cases we can see Springtrap olin the start up screen opening his head to reveal a mummified face inside) but the killer is still haunted by his five victims. He breaks into the old lot and lures them away one by one in the Purple Freddie costume. Why that one? It's the only suit he can hide in other than yellow Bonnie which they would recognize and attack him. Once he dismantles them all he thinks he's safe but is then confronted by the original victim (and blocked by the other 4) terrified he puts on the yellow suit to scare them off (as this was how he lured them to begin with). This suit got the name Springtrap for a reason. Luke the phone guy said, the suits are convertible by using springs to separate the animatronic parts and lock the in place. A bet the kids put up a fight and damaged the suit making the lock faulty. The suit becomes a death trap of springs, a springtrap. We saw the locks fail in the mini game and since no one came back so he was stuck to rot in that suit and began to haunt like the children. Now they claimed he was in a boarded up room and how can that be if he clearly died in an open room With the boarded up door down the hall. I bet either the children took the boards from the door and locked him in there or some thrill seekers went in and did it once the found out he was out of blood. Years later after being locked away for so long he's taken to an attraction where he's alone all night with someone he can take his anger out on.
Edit: I just realized, in the third game you lure Springtrap away using BB's laughter or a child's laughter. The Purple man in Springtrap killed five children and the accidentally died to them too. He hates children and is trying to find the source of the sound to kill it.
It makes a lot of sense :3 Best theory I've heard so far.
