Hmm.. I was starting to not hate Octavian so much.. you know.. Sousuke effect.. (that should seriously be a thing.. anyway).. but I realised that he's a stupid character, no proper personality.. He's just there to annoy us.. why does Rick have to make characters like that?

Since I enjoy making lists:

Octavian is:
-very intelligent
-influential (good or bad)
-jealous (Percy was made praetor over him)
-sadistic (when he said "I hope that hurt" to Percy)
-opinionated
-kinda creepy
-mean spirited
-lacking in morals (this alone probably explains a lot of his behavior)
-arrogant (he truly believes that he would make a better leader than Reyna

So he has many traits, but none of them very likeable. I know why he's hated, but saying that he's less of a character wouldn't be very true. He's just an antagonist, so he's not really meant to be liked.

I don't know, I just feel like there is a lot of history we don't know about with Octavian. I want to keep an open mind about him.

Yeah, but does his backstory honestly matter?
It doesn't matter WHAT motivated him to be like this, or what happened in the past, he is still a horrible person.
His backstory is not going to change that.

I know someone may be thinking
"why are you hating on Octavian there's a lot of other bad antagonists that everybody loves why doesn't octavian get that"
well
even if Octavian didn't kill people he would still be kinda a bad character

and now we have a backstory that explains why had Octavian had murdered her

Backstories causing certain behavior is, to me, like saying that you got badly bit by a cat, and in return you started brutally killing cats. People aren't going to be sympathetic just because you got bit by a cat- that's not a motive. That's a trigger that caused behavior to surface that was already there.
Or something like that x3 I don't know anything about psychology so...
And yes I always use animals to make a point.

There's always one (sometimes more) of those characters in books...
Do authors like annoying us at times? Then make up for it with awesome work?
I guess it makes the book more interesting to have one of those characters. Even if they are as annoying as heck. But annoying characters are really fun to make in books....I don't know what to think anymore.
I do hate Octavian though, don't get me wrong.
