I got my August PPS Lion near February 2013. I don't have the trade anymore, cause I date swapped it for another August PPS Lion, but I remember what I traded for it:

To be honest, I think that's a fair trade. I mean, the rabbits are from 2009 and such and that PPS cub was from 2012. I think two rares would equal very rare but I could be wrong. I wouldn't trade my very rare(s) for two rares though. It depends on how I go about it really.

If the PPS didn't have the kind of demand that it has, it would actually be overpay. Since the bunnies are from 2009, if people valued the lion,logically, I think only one of them would make it fair. Or maybe 1 and a 2011 or 2010 rare. Unfortunately that's not how CS sees it xP

Trading old rares/very rares for a not so old very rare kind of seems way off to me. Not really labeled 'fair' in my books but I can't stop users from trading like that. I suppose whatever is on high demand can go for anything and that's how the community here goes about it. I remember I was tempted to trade for the cub but I held myself back.
